Fresh air in, mosquitoes out

Fly screens in Malaga: every opening has its system

In the heat on the coast, sleeping with the window shut isn’t an option, but leave it open and in come the mosquitoes, flies and moths. Made-to-measure fly screens in Malaga solve both problems: you let the air and light in and keep the insects out, with no coils, no plug-ins and no sprays in the house.

The key is in the words “made to measure”. A fly screen bought in standard sizes hardly ever fits properly: it leaves gaps for insects to sneak through, rubs against the roller shutter or stops the window opening. We measure every opening, look at how the window or door opens and whether there’s a roller shutter, a grille or very little space, and choose the system that works in that particular opening.

We install fly screens in Malaga, the Axarquia and the Costa del Sol, as well as fly screens in Granada city, its metropolitan area and the Costa Tropical. For windows, terrace doors, front doors and businesses.

Roller, pleated or sliding fly screens

The three systems we install most, plus hinged screens for special openings. At the visit we’ll tell you which one suits each window and door.

Roller fly screen

The mesh rolls up into a compact box at the top and runs down two side guides. When you’re not using it, it disappears. It’s the most common choice for bedroom, living room and kitchen windows, and it can roll vertically or sideways depending on the opening.

Pleated fly screen

The mesh folds like a concertina and slides horizontally. It has a very low bottom guide, almost flush with the floor, so you won’t trip stepping out onto the terrace. It’s the best option for fly screen doors onto terraces and balconies.

Sliding fly screen

A mesh panel that slides along its own track next to the window panes. It’s simple, sturdy and very practical on aluminium sliding windows, where it moves just like another pane.

For patio doors, kitchens or openings with lots of coming and going, we also install hinged fly screens, which open like a door and, depending on the model, close on their own. And if the sun bothers you as much as the mosquitoes, pair your fly screen with a roller or vertical awning or a zip screen on the outside.

Roller or pleated fly screen?

They’re the two most requested, and each one shines in a different spot. This is how they behave day to day.

For sliding windows, a sliding fly screen is usually the most practical, and for patio or kitchen doors with lots of traffic, a hinged one. If your home needs shade too, take a look at our roller and vertical awnings; and if you want to enclose the terrace, our aluminium and glass enclosures.

Price

Made-to-measure fly screen prices: what affects the cost

We don’t give ballpark prices because every opening is different and a generic figure wouldn’t tell you what you’ll actually pay. This is what makes a fly screen cost more or less:

Type of systemRoller, pleated, sliding or hinged, each with a different mechanism.
Opening sizeA large terrace door takes more profile and mesh than a window.
Type of meshStandard mesh or other options depending on the model and use.
Profile colourWhite, wood effect or other colours to match your window frames.
Number of openingsFitting several on the same visit lets us organise the work better.
Opening and fittingRoller shutters, grilles, tight spaces or high windows may call for special solutions.

Frequently asked questions about made-to-measure fly screens in Malaga

What’s the best type of fly screen for a terrace door?

For a terrace door or French window, the option we recommend most is a pleated fly screen. The mesh folds like a concertina and slides horizontally, so you can open and close it with one hand as you step out onto the terrace. Most importantly, the bottom guide is very low, almost flush with the floor, so you won’t trip as you go through, which really matters if there are children or older people at home.

Another option is a sliding fly screen, a mesh panel that slides along its own track, which is very practical when the terrace door is an aluminium slider and there’s room in the frame. And for patio or kitchen doors, where people are constantly coming and going, a hinged fly screen that opens like an ordinary door is sometimes a better fit.

What we don’t usually recommend for doors is a vertical roller fly screen, because it isn’t designed to be walked through several times a day. At the visit we look at the width of the door, how it opens, the space available and whether it gets a lot of wind, and tell you which will work best.

If you’d also like shade on that terrace, you can combine the fly screen with a retractable awning or a zip screen. Book your free measuring visit using the form.

Can you fit a fly screen on a window with a roller shutter?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. It’s one of the questions we’re asked most, because almost every window in Malaga has a roller shutter and space for the fly screen is limited. The solution depends on the type of window and where the shutter box is.

The usual approach is to fit a roller fly screen in the window frame, between the shutter and the glass or on the inside, so the shutter goes up and down as normal and so does the fly screen. Its box is compact and the guides are narrow, so it usually fits into a small space. On sliding windows, another option is a sliding fly screen, which runs on its own track like an extra pane.

The important thing is to measure carefully and make sure nothing rubs: neither the shutter against the fly screen nor the fly screen against the window handle. That’s why we don’t work with standard sizes. At the visit we measure every opening and check its depth, the position of the shutter guides and how the window opens. If an opening is tricky, we’ll tell you and find an alternative.

If you want to keep the heat out as well as the insects, read our guide on which awning keeps the heat out best or take a look at our roller awnings for windows.

Do you install fly screens in Granada and on the Costa Tropical?

Yes. As well as the whole province of Malaga, we install fly screens in Granada city and its metropolitan area, and on the Costa Tropical: Motril, Salobreña and Almuñécar. The service is the same as in Malaga: free home visit and measuring, a fixed-price written quote, made-to-measure manufacturing and installation by our own team.

Granada has its own quirks. In the city and the Vega, summers are very hot and dry and some areas have lots of mosquitoes because of the irrigation channels and farmland, so windows stay open for hours at night. On the Costa Tropical, as along the rest of the coast, humidity and salt air make powder-coated aluminium profiles and stainless fixings the sensible choice, and that’s what we work with.

Unlike many online shops that sell fly screens to your measurements for you to fit yourself, we measure and install. That way we make sure every fly screen fits its opening, with no gaps and without rubbing against the shutter, and if anything needs adjusting later, you know who to call.

If you live on the Costa Tropical, take a look at our awnings in Motril page too, where we explain how we work in the area. And if you’d like to make the most of the visit for other jobs, we also install awnings and pergolas in Granada.

Do fly screens block light or airflow?

Very little. The mesh on a fly screen is a fine fabric with a weave designed to stop insects while letting air and light through. You’ll find the room stays just as bright and the breeze, which is what really matters on summer nights in Malaga, keeps coming in. Most people forget it’s even there.

That said, any mesh lets slightly less light and air through than a fully open window. How much depends on the type of mesh and its colour, depending on the model. Grey or dark mesh is usually less visible from inside and gives a clearer view out; at the visit we show you the options available so you can choose.

What really makes the difference is the system. A roller or pleated fly screen tucks away when you don’t need it, so in winter or on mosquito-free days your window is completely clear. Fixed fly screens, on the other hand, are always there.

If it’s the heat rather than the light that worries you, you might want to combine the fly screen with external sun protection. We explain it in which awning keeps the heat out best and on our zip screen page.

How do you clean a fly screen and how long does it last?

Cleaning is simple and worth doing a couple of times a year, a bit more often if you live on the seafront or next to a dusty road. With the fly screen pulled out, go over it with a soft brush or the vacuum cleaner’s brush attachment to remove the dust. Then wipe the mesh and profiles with a damp cloth and water with mild soap. Avoid abrasive products, solvents and pressure washers, which can distort the mesh or damage the brush strips in the guides.

On roller and pleated screens, also check that the guides are free of sand, leaves or dead insects, because that’s what makes a fly screen stick or move stiffly. A quick once-over with a small brush or a cloth is all it takes.

How long it lasts depends on use, how much sun it gets and the environment, especially salt air on the coast. That’s why we work with powder-coated aluminium profiles and stainless fixings. What wears most over the years is the mesh, and on many models it can be replaced without changing the whole fly screen. Materials come with a 2-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer and product, and our installation also has its own guarantee.

If you have awnings too, our blog explains how to clean and look after an awning. And any later adjustments are covered by our after-sales service; you can get in touch via our contact page.

Are there fly screens for homes with dogs or cats?

Yes. If you have pets, an ordinary fly screen may not last long: cats climb the mesh and dogs push it with their nose or paws to get out onto the terrace. For these cases there are reinforced pet-resistant meshes that stand up better to scratching and pushing, available on some systems depending on the model.

The choice of system matters too. On terrace doors the dog goes in and out of, a pleated or hinged fly screen with reinforced mesh usually works better than a roller one, because it opens sideways and copes better with daily use. On windows where the cat sits on the sill, a roller or sliding screen with tough mesh stops it being torn at the first attempt.

No mesh is indestructible, but with the right combination the fly screen lasts much longer and also acts as a barrier to stop the cat jumping out of the window, which is a real worry if you live on a high floor. At the visit, tell us which pets you have and how they move around the house, and we’ll recommend the most sensible option for each window and door.

If you’re also looking for shade to keep the dog cool on the terrace, have a look at our retractable awnings or pergolas. Book your measuring visit using the form.

Which is better, a fixed fly screen or a roller one?

It depends on how you use that window. A fixed fly screen is a frame with mesh that stays permanently in the opening. It’s simple and sturdy, but it’s always there: you can’t lean out, shake out a rug or clean the outside of the glass without removing it, and in winter it stays in the window even when there are no insects.

A roller fly screen rolls up into a compact box when you don’t need it and comes down the side guides when you do. It’s more versatile: in summer you keep it down and in winter you roll it up and the window is clear. That’s why it’s the one we install most in bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens all along the coast.

There are cases where a fixed screen does make sense: windows that are hardly ever opened fully, small openings in bathrooms or storerooms, or very windy windows where you don’t want any mechanism at all. And on sliding windows, a sliding fly screen is a very practical middle ground, because it slides aside like an extra pane when you don’t need it.

At the visit we recommend the system for each opening, which doesn’t have to be the same throughout the house. For windows and balconies that get a lot of sun, you could also consider a drop arm awning on the outside. Request your quote using the form.

How long does it take to install made-to-measure fly screens?

It’s worth separating the overall timescale from the time we’re actually at your home. We arrange the visit and measuring around your availability, and we send you the quote in writing with a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. If a few photos of your windows are enough for us to point you in the right direction, we’ll tell you to speed things up, and if you’re in a hurry because the hot weather is on its way, let us know from the start.

Once you accept it, each fly screen is made to measure with the exact dimensions of its opening and the profile colour you’ve chosen. The manufacturing time depends on the system and the manufacturer, and we state it in the quote so you know when you’ll have them.

Installation is quick and clean: no building work is needed and, in a typical home, we fit all the fly screens in a single visit. When we’ve finished, we open and close each one with you, check that the brush strips seal the sides properly and explain how to clean them so they last.

A tip: don’t wait for the mosquitoes to arrive. May and June are when most people order made-to-measure fly screens in Malaga, so if you order yours in spring they’ll be up before the heat sets in. And if you want to get the terrace ready for summer as well, make the most of the visit to look at awnings or an enclosure.
