The basics

Awnings in Malaga: a system for every space

You don’t choose awnings in Malaga from a catalogue, you choose them for the space. A penthouse in Rincon de la Victoria that gets the afternoon sun is nothing like a narrow balcony in the centre of Velez-Malaga or a bar terrace on the promenade in Torre del Mar. Every space needs a different kind of shade, which is why we make each awning to the exact measurements of your facade.

Some types of awning extend horizontally to cover a terrace, like the retractable or cassette awning; others angle down over a window, like the drop arm; and others drop vertically to block low sun, wind or prying eyes, like roller and guided vertical awnings. Choosing well is the difference between using your terrace all summer and having it just for show.

At QUBRE we handle awning installation in Malaga with our own technical team, no subcontractors. We work with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, Cherubini motors, powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings, because on the coast salt air shows no mercy. And if you don’t know where to start, we’ll come and look at it with you at no cost.

Cassette awning

A retractable awning that closes up inside an aluminium case when it’s retracted. The fabric and arms stay safe from the sun, rain and salt air. See cassette awnings.

Balconies and porches

Roller and vertical awnings

The fabric drops vertically, hanging free, with hinged arms or in guides. It blocks the low afternoon sun and gives you privacy. See roller and vertical awnings.

Awning or pergola for your terrace?

It’s the question we hear most at a first visit. Both give shade, but they solve different things.

    FeatureAwningPergola
StructureFixed to the facade and retracts when you’re not using itA fixed structure with posts, wall-mounted or freestanding
ShadeWhere you need it, when you need itPermanent, or adjustable with bioclimatic pergolas
RainCopes with a light shower if it has the right pitch; in heavy rain it’s best to retract itWith a roof or closed louvres it keeps the rain off, depending on the model
WindNeeds retracting in strong gusts; a sensor can do it automaticallyMore stable, as it’s a fixed structure
Space with no wallNeeds a facade or support legsCan be freestanding in the middle of the garden
PermitsUsually simpler; in a community, keeping to the look of the facadeMay involve more paperwork, depending on the town hall
InvestmentMore modestHigher, especially for bioclimatic pergolas

If you want an area that’s covered all year round, take a look at our pergolas in Malaga and bioclimatic pergolas. If what you’re after is keeping cool, our article on which awning keeps the heat out best will help.

    Price

Made-to-measure awning prices: what affects them

We don’t publish ballpark prices, because every awning is made for a specific facade and a generic figure would only mislead you. This is what makes the quote go up or down:

Type of awningA drop arm for a window doesn’t use the same mechanism as a cassette awning for a terrace.
Width and projectionMore metres of fabric, longer arms and more anchor points.
Your choice of fabricPlain or striped acrylic, or technical fabric, from Sauleda or Dickson.
Manual or motorisedA Cherubini motor with remote and, depending on the model, wind or sun sensors.
Facade and anchoringThe type of wall, the slab or the need for support legs all change the fixings.
Height and accessA penthouse or a tall facade may need access equipment.

    Where we work

Awnings in Malaga, the Axarquia and the Costa Tropical

From our head office in Velez-Malaga we install awnings right across the Axarquia, Malaga city, the Costa del Sol and the Costa Tropical in Granada. Each area has its own climate: the hot terral wind inland, salt air on the seafront, and the levante or poniente (the easterly and westerly winds) depending on the stretch of coast. We take all of that into account when choosing the system and the anchoring.

Frequently asked questions about made-to-measure awnings in Malaga

What type of awning is best for my terrace in Malaga?

It depends on three things: the space, where the sun comes from and how much wind you get. For a large flat terrace or a penthouse, the usual choice is a retractable awning: its folding arms stretch the fabric out horizontally and create a generous area of shade, with no posts, right where you put the table or the sun loungers. If the terrace is on the seafront or very exposed, it’s worth having that retractable awning inside a cassette, which protects the fabric and arms while it’s retracted.

If you want shade on a window or a small balcony, the logical choice is a drop arm awning, which projects at an angle and lets the air through. When the sun comes in very low late in the afternoon, the answer is usually vertical: a roller or vertical awning, which also gives you privacy from the neighbours opposite.

For porches and terraces where the problem is the wind, awnings with side guides, such as windbreaks or a zip screen, keep the fabric in place. And if there’s no wall that’s good for anchoring, or you need a very large projection, there are solutions with support legs or a monobloc system.

The most reliable way is for us to come and see it. The home visit and measuring are free, we show you the options that suit your case and give you a written quote. You can book it using the form on this page.

How much does it cost to install a made-to-measure awning in Malaga?

It’s the first thing people ask us, and the honest answer is that it depends. With awnings in Malaga, an awning for a window and a motorised cassette awning for a large penthouse are very different products, and any "from" price you see online is usually a long way off what you end up paying for an installed awning. That’s why we don’t publish generic price lists: we’d rather measure up and give you a real figure.

The biggest factors are the type of awning, the width and projection, the fabric you choose (plain, striped or technical), whether you want it manual or motorised and with which automation, and the facade we’re anchoring it to. Access matters too: a ground floor isn’t the same as a penthouse where the materials have to be carried up the stairs.

What we do guarantee is clarity. After the free visit we give you a written quote, with no obligation and a fixed price: what you sign is what you pay, with no extras halfway through the installation. You’ll often have it in under 24 hours, so you can compare calmly and without pressure.

If you have a budget in mind, tell us. We’ll tell you which system gives you the most for your money; for example, a manual retractable awning that can be upgraded later with our awning motorisation service, without replacing the whole awning.

Which awning copes best with the levante and poniente winds?

Let’s start with the important bit: no fabric awning is designed to stay extended in a storm. The fabric acts like a sail, and in strong gusts the right thing to do is retract it. That said, some systems behave much better than others in the everyday winds on the coast, and choosing well is the difference between an awning that lasts many summers and one that ends up with a bent arm.

Among vertical systems, the toughest are the ones with the fabric held at the sides: the windbreak awning with side guides and the zip screen, where the edge of the fabric is locked inside the guide and can’t slip out. Among horizontal systems, a properly sized retractable awning with good anchoring and the right pitch holds up far better than one fitted at the limit of its projection.

Even so, the best protection is automatic. A Cherubini motor with a wind sensor, depending on the model, retracts the awning by itself when it detects gusts, even if you’re not at home. In Torre del Mar, Torremolinos or Fuengirola, where the levante (the easterly wind) blows in suddenly in the afternoon, it’s almost essential.

At the visit we look at where the wind comes into your terrace, what kind of facade you have and how high up it is, and suggest the system and anchoring that will perform best. If you’d like to know more about the motor and sensors, you’ll find everything in awning motorisation.

Do I need permission from the community or the town hall to put up an awning?

It depends on where you live and where the awning is going. In a flat or penthouse within a community of owners, the facade is a common element. Many communities have agreed on a model, a fabric colour or a frame colour so that every awning on the building looks the same, and it’s wise to check before ordering anything. We explain it in detail in our article on awnings in communities of owners and the Spanish Horizontal Property Act (Ley de Propiedad Horizontal).

For a detached house, an awning fixed to the facade usually doesn’t involve much paperwork, but every town hall has its own rules, and old towns or protected areas may ask for more. For bars and restaurants with terraces on the public pavement, each municipality’s terrace by-law applies, and it usually regulates the type of awning, the colours and any lettering.

We’ll help you with all of this. At the visit we tell you whether your case usually needs any paperwork and, if it does, we handle the documentation. There’s a practical guide in our article on permits for installing an awning or a pergola in Malaga and Granada.

If you’re the president or administrator of a community and want matching awnings across the whole building, take a look at our page on awnings for communities of owners, where we explain how we organise it so each owner can install their own with the same model.

How long does awning fabric last and how do you look after it in the salt air?

How long a fabric lasts depends on its quality, how much sun it gets, how many hours it spends extended and how well it’s looked after. That’s why we work with Sauleda and Dickson acrylic fabrics, two manufacturers of technical outdoor fabrics designed to keep their colour and stand up to the sun. The specific terms for each collection are set by the manufacturer, and we explain them when you choose your fabric.

On the coast, the enemy is salt air. It settles on the fabric and the frame, attracts dirt and, combined with humidity, encourages stains. Looking after it is simple: brush the fabric dry every so often, rinse it with fresh water and mild soap when it looks dirty, and let it dry extended before you retract it. Avoid bleach, solvents and pressure washers.

Retracting the awning while it’s damp is the most common mistake. If it stays rolled up wet for several days, mould and smells appear that are hard to get rid of. You’ll find all the steps in our guide on how to clean and maintain an awning. If you live on the seafront, a cassette awning helps a lot, because the fabric stays stored away for most of the year.

When the fabric is sun-damaged, torn or faded, there’s no need to replace the whole awning. We carry out awning repairs and fabric replacement, including on awnings installed by another company, and check the arms and anchors while we’re at it.

Is it worth motorising an awning?

If the awning is small and you rarely use it, a crank handle is enough. But once an awning gets beyond a certain size, or you open and close it every day, a motor changes the way you use it. With a remote you open it in seconds, stop it at exactly the right point and retract it effortlessly, so you end up using it far more and it doesn’t get left out when it shouldn’t be.

There’s another big reason on the coast: safety. With a Cherubini motor and, depending on the model, a wind sensor, the awning retracts by itself when it detects gusts. It’s the best way to make sure a windy levante or poniente afternoon doesn’t catch you away from home with the fabric extended. There are also sun sensors that lower the awning when the heat builds up, depending on the model.

Many manual awnings can be motorised later without replacing the whole awning, as long as the frame is in good condition and the roller tube can take the motor. We check this at the visit and tell you honestly whether it’s worth it. There’s more information in awning motorisation and in our article on how to choose an awning motor.

For the motor we need a power point near the awning. If there isn’t one, we’ll point it out in the quote so you can factor it in from the start and it doesn’t come as a surprise on installation day.

What does awning installation involve from start to finish?

It starts with a free home visit. A technician from our team comes to your home or business, measures the facade, checks what the wall is made of, looks at which way it faces and the wind, and asks how you’ll use the terrace. With that information we suggest the right system and show you the Sauleda and Dickson fabric sample books.

Then we send you a written quote, with a fixed price and no obligation, often in under 24 hours. If you accept it, we order the awning to your exact measurements, with the frame colour and fabric you’ve chosen. The lead time depends on the model and the time of year, and we tell you before we start so you can plan around it.

On installation day we come with our own technical team, never subcontractors. We anchor it with stainless fixings, level it, adjust the pitch of the fabric so the water runs off and, if it’s motorised, programme the motor. Before we leave we test it with you, show you how to use and look after it, and leave the area clean.

From then on you have a 2-year warranty on materials, depending on the manufacturer and product (in other words, each manufacturer sets the exact cover for what it makes), plus a guarantee on the structure and installation and our after-sales service. If you’d like to get to know us better, visit our awning and pergola company in Malaga or get in touch through our contact page.

Do you install awnings across the whole Axarquia and Costa del Sol?

Yes. Our head office is in Velez-Malaga and from there we cover the whole Axarquia: Torre del Mar, Nerja, Torrox, Rincon de la Victoria, Algarrobo and Velez itself. We also work in Malaga city and along the Costa del Sol, from Torremolinos and Benalmadena to Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona, and on the Costa Tropical in Granada: Motril, Salobreña, Almuñécar and Granada city and its metropolitan area.

The home visit and measuring are free in all of these areas. What changes from one place to another is the climate, and we take it very seriously. For awnings in the Axarquia near the sea, salt air is the big factor; further inland, it’s the hot summer terral wind. On the Costa del Sol, the levante and poniente mean the anchoring and motorisation need careful thought, and in Granada city the afternoon sun is fierce in summer.

There are pages with information for each town, for example awnings in Velez-Malaga, awnings in Torre del Mar, awnings in Malaga city or awnings in Marbella.

Because installation is always done by our own team, the after-sales service reaches the whole area in the same way: if you ever need an adjustment, a service or new fabric, we come ourselves. If your home is outside these towns, get in touch anyway and we’ll tell you whether we can help.
