Windows open in summer, insects kept out
With Granada’s hot summers, the time to open up the house and let the air in comes when the sun goes down. The trouble is that mosquitoes, moths and other insects drawn to the light come in with the breeze. We install fly screens in Granada made to measure for every window and door; we look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga and measuring costs you nothing.
Every home needs a different system. In the flats of Zaidin or Camino de Ronda, sliding aluminium windows and balcony doors are common. In the townhouses and villas of Armilla, Maracena, Ogijares or Las Gabias, as well as the windows, there are doors onto the garden and the pool that people go in and out of all day. And in the historic centre, you want the fly screen to go unnoticed.
We make them with frames in a range of colours so the fly screen matches your window frames, and we install them with our own team. If you need shade as well, take a look at our pergolas and awnings in Granada; and if you’d like to see every system in detail, there’s our main page on made-to-measure fly screens.

Zaidin. Flats with sliding aluminium windows. A sliding fly screen moves just like another pane of the window.
Camino de Ronda. Buildings with balcony doors and terraces. For the balcony door, a pleated screen has a very low bottom track; if the sun hits it too, pair it with a drop arm awning.
City centre. Old buildings where the openings aren’t always regular. We measure each window separately and make everything to measure; more in made-to-measure fly screens.
Realejo. Houses with patios and barred windows. We look for a fitting that doesn’t get in the way of the bars or the shutter, and a frame that matches the window; for the patio, consider a roller awning.
Armilla. Townhouses with a door onto the patio. A hinged fly screen opens like a door and stands up well to constant comings and goings; to enclose the porch, have a look at our enclosures.
Maracena. Villas and townhouses with gardens. Roller fly screens in the bedrooms and, for the terrace, a vertical awning to keep out the afternoon sun.
Ogijares. Homes with pools, where the doors onto the garden stay open for hours in summer. Pleated screens on the doors and roller screens on the windows; if you want shade, a zip screen.
Las Gabias. Residential developments of villas with lots of windows per house. We measure them all in one visit and quote for them together; for the terrace, have a look at the retractable roof pergola.
Hot days, windows open at night: what Granada needs
The inland climate shapes how you ventilate your home and which fly screen suits each opening. This is what we take into account.
Very hot summers
In high summer the house heats up during the day, and the simplest way to cool it down is to throw everything open when the sun goes down.
What we recommend: roller fly screens in the bedrooms so you can let the air in all night without insects, and a roller awning to keep the sun off the facade.
Gardens, watering and pools
On residential developments with gardens, watering and standing water in plant pots and corners encourage mosquitoes as evening falls.
What we recommend: pleated or hinged fly screens on the doors to the outside, as they’re the ones opened most.
Cold winters
There are no mosquitoes in winter, but the fly screen stays on the window through months of frost and rain.
What we recommend: systems that retract, such as roller or pleated screens, so the mesh is stored away or folded up in the cold months.

A first suggestion. At the free visit we measure up and confirm it opening by opening.
For the windows of a flat
On sliding aluminium windows, the most practical option is a fly screen that moves just like another pane, or one that rolls up out of the way when you don’t need it.
- Sliding fly screenGlides along its own track.→
- Roller fly screenRolls up into a compact cassette.→
- Drop arm awningShade for the same window.→
For a balcony door
You go in and out of the terrace door many times a day. The bottom track has to be low so you don’t trip, and the mesh easy to open with one hand.
- Pleated fly screenBottom track almost flush with the floor.→
- Roller awningVertical shade on the railing.→
- Zip screenA taut screen for exposed terraces.→
For a villa with a garden
A villa has lots of different openings: bedroom windows, doors onto the garden, the kitchen. Ideally we measure them all in one go and choose the right system for each.
- Made-to-measure fly screensA system for every opening.→
- EnclosuresFor the porch facing the garden.→
- Aluminium pergolaShade beside the pool.→
For a home in the historic centre
In older houses the openings aren’t always regular, and many windows have bars or inside shutters. We look for a fitting that doesn’t get in the way and respects the look of the building.
- Roller fly screenDiscreet, rolls away when not in use.→
- Hinged fly screenFor busy patio doors.→
- Roller awningDiscreet shade, if the rules allow.→
For a business
In bar kitchens, bakeries or warehouses, ventilation is essential and insects are a serious problem. The fly screen has to withstand heavy use and be easy to clean.

Do you need permission for a fly screen in Granada?
In most cases it’s a simple installation with no paperwork, but there are situations worth checking first.
Buildings with a community
If the fly screen can be seen from the facade, some communities ask for a specific frame colour to keep the building’s look consistent. We explain it in our guide to communities of owners.
Albaicin and the historic centre
In heritage-protected areas, anything visible on the facade may be regulated. We choose discreet colours and fittings and check what applies beforehand.
Businesses and premises
In kitchens and premises where food is handled, a fly screen helps keep insects at bay. We adapt it to heavy use and to service doors.
If any paperwork is needed, we’ll tell you
We review your case at the visit and handle the paperwork when it’s needed. We explain it in the article do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Frequently asked questions about fly screens in Granada
Which fly screen is best for the windows of a flat in Zaidin or Camino de Ronda?
It mainly depends on how your window opens. In many flats in these neighbourhoods the windows are sliding aluminium ones, and two systems work very well there: the sliding fly screen, a mesh panel that glides along its own track next to the window panes, and the roller fly screen, which rolls up into a compact cassette at the top.
A sliding screen is simple, sturdy and very practical if there’s room in the frame. A roller screen has the advantage of disappearing when you’re not using it, so in winter the window is completely clear. On casement windows, the ones that open inwards, a roller screen is usually the most convenient option because it doesn’t catch on the window when you open it.
If your window has a roller shutter, we take that into account too: we position the fly screen so the shutter can still go up and down as normal. And if the flat belongs to a community that sets the facade colour, we choose a frame that blends in with the rest of the building. You’ll find every system explained in made-to-measure fly screens.
For fly screens in Granada to work properly, the measuring has to be precise, because every window has its own gaps and small irregularities. That’s why we come and measure free of charge and give you a fixed-price written quote. You can request it using the form.
Which fly screen should I fit on the garden door of a villa in Armilla, Maracena or Ogijares?
In a villa in the metropolitan area, the door onto the garden or the pool is the one that gets the most use in summer: children running in and out, the barbecue, the dog wanting to come in. It needs a fly screen that opens and closes easily and doesn’t get in the way when you walk through with your hands full.
The option we recommend most often is the pleated fly screen. Its mesh folds like an accordion and slides sideways, and its bottom track is very low, almost flush with the floor, so you won’t trip. For doors with constant traffic, such as the one from the kitchen to the patio, a hinged fly screen also works well: it opens like a normal door and, depending on the model, closes by itself.
If you have pets, it’s worth considering a tougher mesh, depending on the model, because dogs and cats tend to push against it. And if the door is a large sliding one, we measure with particular care so the fly screen covers the whole opening without leaving gaps for insects to sneak through.
The garden door is often also where the most afternoon sun comes in. In that case, you can combine the fly screen with a vertical awning or a pergola in the garden for extra shade. You’ll find more systems for doors in made-to-measure fly screens.
How much do fly screens cost in Granada?
We don’t give prices without measuring, because the cost of each fly screen depends on its system and size, and one house can have very different openings. What we do is come and measure for free at your home in Granada or the metropolitan area and give you a written quote with a fixed price, often in under 24 hours.
The factors that matter most are the type of system (roller, pleated, sliding or hinged), the size of the opening, the type of mesh and the frame colour, which can be white, wood-effect or other colours depending on the model, so it matches your window frames. A large terrace door, naturally, needs more frame and more mesh than a bathroom window.
The number of openings counts too. If you’re going to protect every window in the house, it’s best to quote for them together: we measure everything in one visit and can plan the installation better. And some cases call for a special solution, such as windows with bars, shutters or openings high up, which we assess on site before giving you a price.
If you’d like to get ahead, send us photos of the windows and doors and some rough measurements on WhatsApp. That way we arrive with the systems already in mind. And if you’d like to know how we work before calling us, you’ll find everything in about us.
Can I have fly screens fitted on a house in the Albaicin or Granada’s historic centre?
Yes. Fly screens are among the most discreet things you can fit to a window, and in houses in the Albaicin, the Realejo or the centre they’re usually the simplest way to let the air in during summer without filling the house with insects. Even so, in heritage-protected areas it’s worth getting the details right from the start.
The first thing is colour. We choose a frame that blends in with the existing window frames, whether they’re wooden, white or another shade, so it’s barely noticeable from the street. The second is the fitting: whenever possible, we place it inside the window reveal, without sticking out from the line of the facade.
In older houses it’s common to find irregular openings, bars, inside shutters or wooden window frames. We measure each window separately and find the system that fits: a roller screen where space is tight, a hinged one on the patio door or a pleated one on a balcony door. If you’re unsure what the regulations allow, read do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?, where we explain how protected areas work.
If you’d also like shade for an inner courtyard, we can look at a roller awning or another lightweight solution too. We’ll go through it at the visit, which is free, and give you a single quote for everything, with a fixed price and no obligation.
Can I fit a fly screen on a window with a roller shutter or bars in Granada?
Yes, although each case needs looking at. The shutter and the bars take up space in the opening, and the fly screen has to live alongside them without stopping them from working. It’s a common situation both in city flats and on the ground floors of townhouses and older homes, and there’s almost always a solution.
With a roller shutter, the usual approach is to fit the fly screen on the inside of the window or to choose a roller screen with its own cassette, so the shutter can still go up and down without rubbing. We measure the depth of the opening, the clearance between the shutter and the window and the direction it opens to choose the right system.
With bars, the challenge is being able to open the window and reach the fly screen comfortably. If the bars sit right against the opening, a roller or sliding screen fitted on the inside is usually the answer. On the ground floors of villas in Maracena or Las Gabias, where the windows face the garden, we also make sure you can clean the glass without taking anything apart.
The key thing is never to make anything without seeing the opening first. That’s why the visit is free: we come to your home, measure up and tell you what’s possible and what isn’t. You’ll find the systems explained in made-to-measure fly screens and you can book the visit using the form.
Which fly screen is best in Granada if I have children or pets?
With children and pets, a fly screen gets used more and treated more roughly. Children dash in and out to the garden or the terrace, and dogs and cats push the mesh with their noses or climb onto the windowsill to look out. In the townhouses and villas of the metropolitan area, with a patio or a pool, that’s part of everyday summer life.
For doors we recommend the pleated fly screen, with its very low bottom track that prevents trips, or a hinged one for openings with constant traffic. On windows, a roller or sliding screen with a tough mesh, depending on the model, stops the cat from tearing it at the first attempt. We’ll show you the mesh options at the visit.
We also think about safety. A fly screen is not fall protection, so on upper-floor windows with young children it needs to be combined with the appropriate safety features. The same goes for cats that lean out of windows in high-rise flats. We tell you this clearly so nobody relies on the mesh for something it isn’t designed to do.
If you also need shade for the play area at the same house, take a look at our pergolas and awnings in Granada. And if the mesh breaks on a fly screen you already have, ask us: our after-sales service also looks after installations by other installers. More details in made-to-measure fly screens.
Do fly screens need to come down in winter with Granada’s cold and frost?
There’s no need. The fly screens we install are designed to stay on the window all year round. What changes is how you use them: there are no mosquitoes in winter, so you’ll normally leave them retracted, and how you do that depends on the system you have. None of them needs taking down or storing in a cupboard.
A roller screen keeps the mesh inside its cassette, protected from rain, dust and frost, and the window is left completely clear. A pleated screen folds away to one side and takes up very little room. Sliding and hinged screens, on the other hand, always stay in view, although you can slide them or open them and leave them to one side.
Before winter, it’s worth cleaning the tracks with a brush or a cloth to remove the dust and insects that have built up over the summer; that way, when spring arrives, the fly screen will run smoothly without sticking. If you live somewhere the cold really bites, such as Monachil or Huetor Vega, also check that there’s no water left in the tracks before a frosty night.
If after the winter you notice the fly screen isn’t rolling up properly or the mesh is damaged, let us know and we’ll check it. And if you’re thinking of enclosing the terrace so you can use it when it’s cold too, take a look at our aluminium and glass enclosures or our bioclimatic pergolas for Granada.
Do you install fly screens in bars, kitchens and businesses in Granada?
Yes. As well as homes, we install fly screens for businesses in Granada and its metropolitan area: bar and restaurant kitchens, bakeries, warehouses and shops that need ventilation without letting insects in. With the heat of a Granada summer, keeping windows and doors open in a commercial kitchen is almost unavoidable. A well-chosen mesh lets the air through without the kitchen filling up with flies at the busiest times.
In a business, a fly screen takes far heavier use than in a home. For service doors, where suppliers and staff come and go, a hinged fly screen is very practical because you just push it open. On kitchen windows, a sliding or roller screen makes cleaning easier, and in these spaces cleaning happens every day. We choose the frame colour to match the facade or the joinery of your premises.
We try to fit the installation around your opening hours so we don’t interrupt service, and we measure every opening in one go to give you a single written quote with a fixed price. If your premises have outdoor seating, we can help with shade too: have a look at our awnings for bars and restaurants.
The fly screens in Granada that we install for businesses come with a guarantee on the installation and after-sales service, so a torn mesh or a stuck track doesn’t become a problem in the middle of the season. You can book the visit using the form or get in touch via our contact page.
