Awnings in Salobreña for whitewashed houses and sea-view terraces
Few towns on the coast pack so many contrasts into so little space. Installing awnings in Salobreña can mean shading the balcony of a white house climbing the hill up to the castle, protecting the terrace of a flat facing Playa del Peñón or giving shade to the porch of a home surrounded by the vega, the fertile farmland around the town. Each of those homes needs a different system and different fixings.
In the old town, the whitewashed facades and small openings call for discreet solutions that don’t spoil the look of the village. Along the beachfront, from La Charca to La Caleta-La Guardia, it’s the wind and the salty breeze that call the shots. And towards Lobres and the vega, with more space and more heat, is where pergolas in Salobreña and long-projection awnings fit best.
We make everything with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, automate with Cherubini and fix every structure with stainless screws on powder-coated aluminium. Coming to measure up costs you nothing, and before you decide you’ll have a written offer with a fixed price in your hand, with no obligation.

Salobreña village. White houses on the hill, with balconies and small windows. A drop arm awning and a roller awning fit in well.
Playa del Peñón. Flats and terraces right by the sea. A cassette awning keeps the fabric safe from the salt air.
Playa de la Charca. Terraces open to the sea wind. To close off one side, windbreaks with side guides are the most practical choice.
La Caleta-La Guardia. A coastal village with apartment blocks. A terrace enclosure lets you use it in winter too.
Lobres. Houses with patios and porches inland in the municipality. A wooden pergola looks its best here.
The vega. Homes among the crops, with more mosquitoes in summer. Made-to-measure fly screens are the best investment.
Sea breeze, hilltop sun and the vega: three climates in one town
The same summer afternoon feels different at the top of the old town, beside El Peñón or among the crops. This is how we take that into account when we suggest a system.
White facades that reflect the sun
In the old town, the whitewashed houses bounce the light around and raised terraces get uninterrupted sun for much of the day.
What we recommend: fabrics in shades that go with the white of the village, and compact systems such as the drop arm or roller awning.
Salt air along the beachfront
By El Peñón and La Charca the sea breeze leaves a layer of salt on arms, brackets and screws, which over the years turns into rust.
What we recommend: powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings and a cassette awning to store the fabric away when it’s not in use.
Levante and poniente on the coast
Salobreña’s coast gets gusts of levante and poniente (the easterly and westerly winds) that can catch an extended awning by surprise, especially on terraces with no buildings in front.
What we recommend: a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor and side screens in guides on the most exposed terraces.

Old town, communities and the vega: what paperwork applies in Salobreña
We check the paperwork before we make anything, so there are no surprises. These are the situations that come up most in the municipality.
Salobreña Town Hall
Retractable systems come with fewer requirements than permanent structures; a pergola, depending on its size, may need a minor works licence or a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall). In the old town there may also be aesthetic conditions; we check in each case.
Coastal apartment blocks
In the blocks at La Caleta-La Guardia or by the beaches, the community of owners decides about the facade. We explain it in our guide to awnings in communities.
Homes on the vega
On farmland or non-developable land, building anything fixed is much more restricted, so with a house on the vega we first look at what the regulations allow and then design.
We take care of the paperwork when it’s needed
If anything has to be requested from the town hall or the community, you’ll know from the first visit and we’ll prepare the paperwork with you. More details in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Questions about awnings in Salobreña
Which awning should I put on a white house in Salobreña’s old town?
The houses in Salobreña’s old town have a very strong character: whitewashed facades, fairly small window openings, narrow balconies and terraces looking out to sea from high on the hill. A bulky awning or one in a loud colour looks out of place straight away, so here we go for discreet, well-proportioned solutions.
For windows and balconies, a drop arm awning is the most rewarding: its arms come down in front of the opening and give shade without sticking out too far. If what you want is to cover the railing from the low afternoon sun and gain some privacy, a roller awning drops vertically and takes up very little room. For a roof terrace or a larger raised terrace, a pergola fixed to the facade creates steady shade.
For the fabric colour, we usually recommend shades that go with the white facades: creams, sands, light greys or soft stripes. The Sauleda and Dickson sample books have more than enough options to get it right, and we bring them to the visit.
Installing in the old town has its quirks, because some streets are steep and getting materials in isn’t always straightforward. We look at it on the day we measure up so we can plan it properly. And if your house is in an area with aesthetic conditions, we check what’s allowed before we make anything. You can book the visit using the form.
How much does an awning cost in Salobreña, and what makes the price vary?
As an awning company covering Salobreña and the rest of the Costa Tropical, we make every awning to measure for your opening, so we don’t work with generic price lists. What we do is come to Salobreña at no cost, measure up and give you a written quote with a fixed price, which often reaches you in under 24 hours and doesn’t commit you to anything.
The final price depends mainly on four things. The first is the system: a roller awning for a village balcony has nothing in common with a motorised cassette awning for a flat on Playa del Peñón. The second is the size, width and projection. The third is the fabric you choose from Sauleda or Dickson. And the fourth is extras such as the Cherubini motor, remote control or wind sensor.
Where it’s anchored counts too. A solid wall, a slab edge or an old wall in an old-town house each need different fixings, and near the sea every screw we use is stainless. If access is difficult, we take it into account from the start so there are no surprises on installation day.
Before replacing a whole awning, it’s worth checking whether new fabric or a new motor will do. We explain it in awning repairs and new fabric. And if you’d like to look through the systems at your leisure before the visit, you’ll find the whole catalogue in made-to-measure awnings.
Which awning copes best with the wind on a flat at Playa del Peñón or La Charca?
People who ask us for awnings at Playa del Peñón or La Charca usually have a terrace wide open to the sea, with little or nothing to break the wind. When a strong levante or poniente blows in, an extended awning acts like a sail, and that’s when arms bend and fabric tears. That’s why safety in this area starts with being able to retract the awning in time.
The best safeguard is motorisation with a wind sensor. A Cherubini motor with a sensor detects the gusts and retracts the awning on its own, whether or not you’re at the flat. It’s especially useful in holiday homes that are shut up for days at a time. More details in awning motorisation.
As for the system, a cassette model hides the fabric and arms in an aluminium case when retracted, and on the seafront that greatly extends its life. If you want to stay out on the terrace when it’s blowing, the answer isn’t a horizontal awning but a vertical screen: a windbreak awning with side guides or a zip screen, which are held along their full length and can’t work loose.
The fixings complete the picture. Before installing, we check what the wall is made of and choose suitable plugs and stainless fixings. At the visit we’ll tell you honestly what will hold up best on your particular terrace and which combination of systems makes sense for how you use it.
Do I need a licence to put up an awning in Salobreña’s old town?
Salobreña’s old town is one of the most recognisable on the Granada coast, so it’s reasonable to assume that anything installed on the facade may be subject to aesthetic conditions. In general, something that retracts (a retractable awning) involves fewer requirements than something that stays permanently in place (a fixed pergola), and the latter, depending on its size, may need a minor works licence or a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall) submitted to Salobreña Town Hall.
What’s required in each street is set by the current municipal regulations, and it can include things like the fabric colour, the type of structure or what can be seen from the street. That’s why we never make anything without checking your particular case first. We’d rather take a little longer over the planning than have to take it down afterwards, which nobody wants, either for the cost or the hassle.
If you live in an apartment block, on top of the municipal regulations there’s the community of owners, which can set the model and colour for the whole facade. You’ll find the details in our guide to awnings in communities of owners.
At the visit we tell you which procedure applies and, if it’s needed, we prepare the paperwork with you. That way all you have to do is choose the model and colour. To get an idea beforehand, read our article on permits to install an awning or a pergola.
Which pergola do you recommend for a house on the Salobreña vega or in Lobres?
Heading inland in the municipality, things change: less sea breeze, more hours of heat in summer and homes with a patio, porch or garden. It’s ideal territory for pergolas in Salobreña, because there’s room to create a generous shaded area for eating, reading or getting together without relying on an awning.
If you like a traditional look, a wooden pergola is a wonderful match for country houses and patios in Lobres, although it needs a protective treatment every so often. If you’d rather forget about maintenance, an aluminium pergola can have a wood-effect finish and is cleaned with soap and water.
There are several options for the roof: a sliding canopy you draw back when you want sun, as on a retractable roof pergola, or adjustable louvres that control light and airflow and keep off a shower. We choose based on how much you use the porch, at what times of year and where the afternoon sun comes from. If you want the most complete system, ask us about the bioclimatic pergola.
In farming areas we also recommend thinking about the windows: made-to-measure fly screens make summer nights far more comfortable. And because fixed structures on agricultural land face more restrictions, we go through what can be installed on your plot with you before proposing anything. The visit and measuring, as always, are free.
Do you install awnings for bars and restaurants in Salobreña?
Yes. For a hospitality business the terrace is part of the premises, and in Salobreña many have the bonus of views over the sea or the village. The challenge is to shade every table and shelter customers from the wind without hiding what makes the terrace appealing.
Windbreak awnings with side guides are very useful on the coast: they close off the sides when the wind gets up and can have clear windows so customers can still see out. For the roof, depending on the width, we suggest large folding-arm awnings, monobloc awnings or awnings with ground support.
Fabric for a business has to be easy to clean and keep its colour with use. The fabrics are by Sauleda and Dickson and, depending on the model, can be personalised with the name of the premises. A Cherubini motor with a push button means opening and closing every day isn’t a chore for the staff.
When the tables are on public space, the awning has to comply with the town hall’s terrace permit; we’ll point out what to check. We install outside service hours whenever possible, so your terrace doesn’t lose a single day’s trade. More information in awnings for businesses and hospitality.
Can you enclose the terrace of a flat in La Caleta-La Guardia?
Yes, we install aluminium and glass enclosures in Salobreña for terraces and porches. In the apartment blocks at La Caleta-La Guardia and along the beachfront it’s a frequent request, because it turns a terrace you only use in summer into another room of the house, sheltered from the wind and with all the light from the sea.
The enclosure is adapted to each opening. Sliding glass panels let you open it up completely on good days and close it when it’s windy or turns cooler. The aluminium is powder-coated and the fixings are stainless to stand up to the salty air. Further down, among our work, you’ll see an enclosure we installed on the Granada coast, and there are more systems in terrace and porch enclosures.
In an apartment block you need to involve the community of owners, because the enclosure changes the look of the facade, and in some cases the town hall too. We explain what steps to take and what to bring to the owners’ meeting, and we handle the paperwork when it’s needed.
Many customers combine the enclosure with an outdoor awning for the summer or with fly screens on the windows. If that’s you, we take all the measurements at the same appointment and you receive a single written offer, with a fixed price and no obligation to accept it.
How do you look after an awning in the sea breeze in Salobreña, and who fixes it if it fails?
An awning on the coast needs little, but that little makes all the difference. We recommend rinsing the frame with fresh water now and then to remove the salt, brushing the fabric dry to get rid of dust and sand, and never leaving it rolled up wet for days. There’s a full guide in how to clean and look after an awning.
If you choose well from the start, maintenance is greatly reduced. The powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings we use on the coast prevent rust, and a cassette system keeps the fabric and arms protected when not in use. A wind sensor, for its part, prevents most breakages caused by gusts, which are the most typical fault on beach terraces. And if the awning goes unused all winter, it’s best left retracted.
If something still goes wrong, we carry out awning repairs in Salobreña, including on awnings installed by other companies. We replace fabric with made-to-measure Sauleda or Dickson fabrics, swap out damaged arms and brackets, and repair or fit Cherubini motors. It’s all in awning repairs and new fabric.
The materials we install come with a 2-year warranty, with the scope each manufacturer sets for each product, and on top of that we guarantee the structure and the installation. For any fault, send us a photo on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you how we’ll fix it and which parts are needed.
