Awnings in Nerja that respect the white house
Anyone looking for awnings in Nerja usually has two priorities at once: protection from a sun that never lets up, and not spoiling a white facade or a sea view that’s exactly what makes the house special. We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga and we’ve already worked on homes in Nerja, such as the awning with support legs and the retractable roof pergola you’ll see in the photos.
The municipality brings together very different settings. In the town centre and around the Balcon de Europa there are narrow streets, small balconies and whitewashed houses where the awning needs to be discreet. In Burriana, El Playazo and Capistrano there are lots of flats with sea-facing terraces, many of them holiday lets. And in quieter Maro there are houses with gardens, where the most popular request is a pergola in Nerja.
We make everything to measure with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics and Cherubini motors, on powder-coated aluminium profiles with stainless fixings, and installation is carried out by our own team.

Town centre and Balcon de Europa. Narrow streets and small balconies on whitewashed houses. A roller awning or a drop arm awning gives shade without jutting out over the street.
Burriana. Flats and terraces a few steps from the beach, with plenty of salt air. A cassette awning that stores the fabric away pays off here.
El Playazo. Homes open to the sea and generous terraces. Support legs allow long projections with extra stability.
Capistrano. A hillside urbanisation with stepped terraces and views. A retractable roof pergola or a motorised retractable awning fits well.
Maro. A small, quiet village with traditional houses and gardens. A good spot for a wooden pergola or a wood-effect aluminium one.
Frigiliana (neighbouring municipality). An inland village next to Nerja, with white houses and patios. We install aluminium pergolas and discreet awnings that respect the facade.
Picture-postcard sun, salt air and white facades: what to bear in mind
Nerja’s fine weather is its biggest attraction, and also what punishes an awning most. This is what we weigh up before suggesting a solution.
Long hours of sunlight and glare
White walls and the sea reflect the light and multiply the heat on terraces and balconies. The wrong fabric soon fades and lets through more heat than you’d think.
What we recommend: light-coloured acrylic fabrics that don’t overheat, and arms with just the right reach to cover the area where you sit.
Sea breeze on the beaches
In Burriana, El Playazo or Capistrano, the salty air attacks ordinary screws and poorly protected profiles, especially in homes that stay shut up for weeks.
What we recommend: powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings and a cassette awning that protects the fabric while you’re away.
An old town with narrow streets
In the town centre there are small balconies, eaves and neighbours very close by. A bulky awning gets in the way of everything and may not suit the look of the building.
What we recommend: compact systems such as a drop arm awning or a roller awning, in colours that match the facade.

For a balcony or a window in the town centre
In the old town, the awning has to be compact, discreet and not jut out over the street. The colour matters as much as the shade.

Town hall, facade and neighbouring municipality: paperwork in Nerja
Every installation has its own context. These are the three scenarios we see most in Nerja and the surrounding area.
Nerja Town Hall
Nerja’s by-laws have the final say. A retractable awning usually involves a simple procedure; a fixed pergola, depending on its size and location, may need a minor works licence or a “declaración responsable” (a sworn statement to the town hall).
Old town facades and communities
In the town centre and in urbanisations there may be colour and model requirements, whether set by the by-laws or agreed by the community. We explain it in awnings in communities of owners.
If your house is in Frigiliana
Frigiliana is a separate municipality, with its own town hall and its own rules. Before installing on a house there, we check what applies in your case.
We take care of the paperwork
If a permit is needed, we tell you which one and handle the paperwork. You’ll find more information in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Everything people ask us about awnings in Nerja
Which awning should I put on a white house in Nerja town centre without spoiling the facade?
In Nerja’s old town, the whitewashed facade is part of a house’s charm, and the wrong awning can ruin it. The key lies in three decisions: a compact system that doesn’t jut out over the street, a fabric colour that complements the white, and a powder-coated frame that blends in rather than stands out. Of the awnings in Nerja we install in the town centre, these are the ones that give the best results when those three details are considered from the start.
For small balconies, a roller awning rests on the railing and gives shade and privacy without encroaching on your neighbour’s space. For windows, a drop arm awning lets air in at the sides and looks very discreet when retracted. In both cases we usually recommend natural, sand or off-white shades, or soft stripes.
Narrow streets also affect the installation. Sometimes there’s no room to park a van by the door or to work with a large ladder. We look at this at the visit, organise access and install with as little disruption as possible for you and your neighbours.
If your building has a community of owners or the street has any aesthetic requirements, we check before we make anything so the awning fits in from day one. We don’t charge for the visit or the measuring, the quote comes in writing and we bring the fabric sample book to your home so you can see the colour against the wall.
Do I need permission from Nerja Town Hall for an awning or a pergola?
It depends on what you’re installing and where. As a general rule, retracting and extending isn’t the same as building: a retractable awning is dealt with more simply than a fixed pergola. Depending on its dimensions, its height and whether it can be seen from the street, a pergola may need a minor works licence or a “declaración responsable” (a sworn statement), and that’s for Nerja Town Hall to decide.
In the historic centre and on the most visible streets, there may also be conditions on colours or materials. And if you live in an urbanisation such as those in Capistrano or in a building near the beach, the community of owners also has a say: it can require the same design for everyone. We sum it up in the article on awnings in communities of owners.
A situation we often come across: houses that actually belong to Frigiliana, the neighbouring municipality. In that case it’s Frigiliana Town Hall’s rules that apply, not Nerja’s, and it’s worth being clear about that before applying for anything. With the exact address we can settle it straight away and avoid applying for a permit in the wrong place.
You don’t have to work it out on your own. We check it at the visit, tell you which procedure applies in your case and, when needed, take care of the paperwork. There’s more in the article do I need permission to install an awning or a pergola?
Which awning best withstands the salt air in Burriana and El Playazo?
In Nerja’s beach areas, the sea breeze leaves salt on everything it touches: fabric, profiles, arms and screws. Combined with humidity, that salt speeds up wear, and it’s common to see awnings with rust stains on the fixings or with fabric that has faded too soon. To avoid that, the choice of materials is as important as the model.
The frame should be powder-coated aluminium and the fixings stainless. They’re details you don’t see in a photo, but they decide how long the awning lasts. On top of that, a cassette awning closes like a case with the fabric and arms inside, so they spend the night and stormy days protected.
The fabric counts too. We work with Sauleda and Dickson acrylic fabrics designed for outdoor use, which hold their colour better and can be cleaned with water. A rinse every so often, and letting it dry before retracting it, makes it last much longer. We explain it step by step in how to clean and look after an awning.
If your current awning has already taken a battering from the salt air, you may not need a new one: sometimes new fabric and a part or two are enough. We check it with no obligation, even if it was fitted by another installer, and give you a written quote with a fixed price.
How do I shade a sea-view terrace in Nerja without blocking the view?
It’s probably the question we hear most in Nerja. Lots of people bought their home for the view, and the last thing they want is an awning that cuts it off. The good news is that there are systems designed for exactly that: giving shade when you need it and disappearing when you don’t.
The most common is the retractable awning, which folds away completely against the facade. For very deep terraces, adding support legs allows a longer projection without the fabric sagging; it’s the solution we installed on the Nerja home you can see in the photos. With a motor, you open and close it with the remote control depending on the time of day.
For the low afternoon sun, which is the most bothersome, a zip screen or a vertical awning with screen fabric filters the light and lets you see out through the fabric, depending on the model and colour you choose. That way you cut the heat and glare without feeling shut in, and at night you raise it to see the sea and the lights along the coast again.
If you’d prefer a fixed structure, an aluminium retractable roof pergola or a bioclimatic pergola with adjustable louvres gives you lasting shade and a roof that opens to the sky. At the visit we study which way your terrace faces and suggest the option that best preserves your views.
I have a holiday home in Nerja: which awning is best if I’m not always there?
A holiday let or second home in Nerja has a particular problem: it goes days or weeks without anyone keeping an eye on it, and an awning left open or wet fabric rolled up for a long time end up causing headaches. On top of that, if you rent it out, every guest will use it their own way.
That’s why for these homes we almost always recommend motorising the awning, with a wind sensor connected to a Cherubini motor. If the wind picks up, the awning retracts by itself, even if it’s been left open and nobody’s there. For guests, a remote control is also far more intuitive than a hand crank, and it cuts down on breakdowns caused by misuse, which are among the most common in holiday flats where someone different arrives every week.
The second point is protection: a cassette awning stores the fabric when it’s retracted and keeps it safe from salt air and dust. Together with powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings, it’s the combination that needs the least maintenance in a house that isn’t always lived in. We leave everything properly adjusted and explain how it works so you can pass it on to your guests.
And if something goes wrong while you’re away, you have our after-sales service. You can send us photos or video on WhatsApp so we can see what’s happening and arrange a visit. We also check awnings installed by other companies: see awning repairs and new fabric.
Do you install awnings and pergolas in Maro and Frigiliana?
Yes. Maro is part of the municipality of Nerja and we cover it just like everywhere else in the area. Frigiliana is a neighbouring municipality with its own town hall, and we work there too. Many people looking for a company in Nerja actually have their home in one of these two villages, so we’re asked this a lot. The short answer is yes: the visit is just as free and the quote just as fixed.
In both places, whitewashed village houses with patios, roof terraces and the odd garden are more common than apartment blocks. That changes the type of installation: people ask for more pergolas and patio awnings than balcony awnings. A wooden pergola suits the traditional architecture very well, and if you’d rather forget about varnishing, there’s aluminium with a wood-effect finish.
For patios where the shade needs to move with the day, a retractable roof pergola with a sliding canopy is very practical. And on roof terraces exposed to the sun all day, a bioclimatic pergola lets you use the space in spring and autumn too.
As each municipality has its own rules, and in traditional village centres the look of things tends to be closely watched, we check what applies in your particular case before designing anything fixed. The visit and the written quote are free and with no obligation, just as in Nerja town centre.
Do you install awnings for restaurants and bars in Nerja that get lots of tourists?
Yes. Nerja welcomes visitors for much of the year, and many bar, restaurant and ice-cream parlour terraces work flat out. For a business like that, the awning isn’t just shade: it’s the image tourists see as they walk past and a way of filling tables when the sun is beating down.
Depending on the terrace, we combine large retractable awnings, windbreaks with side guides to close off the sides on breezy days and, where the facade can’t take any more, awnings with support legs that rest on the ground. If the terrace is used all year, a pergola with side enclosures may be a better investment, because it stretches the terrace’s useful season into spring and autumn.
For hospitality we recommend tough, easy-to-clean fabrics in colours that won’t fade within a few seasons. Sauleda and Dickson have ranges on which the business’s logo or name can be printed on the valance, depending on the model. With a motor, staff can open and close it in seconds at the start and end of service.
When the terrace takes up public space, the awning has to respect the business’s terrace licence; we check that with you before we make anything. We schedule the installation to cause as little disruption as possible to your business, first thing in the morning or on your closing day, whichever you prefer. Find out more in awnings for businesses and hospitality.
The fabric on my awning in Nerja has faded: is it worth replacing just the fabric?
In most cases, yes. With Nerja’s intense sun, the fabric is the first thing to age: it fades, stains or tears long before the frame stops working. If the arms hold their tension, the roller tube turns normally and the fixings are solid, new fabric will make the awning look like new for far less than replacing the whole thing.
To find out, we come and check the awning with no obligation, even if another company installed it. We check the arms, springs, brackets and the motor, if it has one. If everything is fine, we take exact measurements and make new made-to-measure fabric in Sauleda or Dickson. You can choose from lots of plain colours and stripes, or take the opportunity to change the look of your facade.
If we find rusty parts or a worn arm, we’ll tell you and give you the full quote in writing, at a fixed price, so you can decide. And if the frame is no longer worth it, we’ll tell you clearly rather than fitting new fabric to something that’s going to fail.
It’s also a good time to motorise the awning with a Cherubini motor. You’ll find all the information in awning repairs and fabric replacement, and if you’re also looking elsewhere in the area, see our page on awnings in Torrox.
