Awnings in Estepona designed with the wind from the Strait in mind
Estepona is closer to the Strait of Gibraltar than anywhere else we work, and you can feel it on the terraces. When we plan awnings in Estepona we start from a simple idea: the system has to give shade when the sun beats down and be safely retracted when the wind gets up, which here can happen quickly.
Few towns on the coast mix so many styles of home. In the old town there are white houses with balconies and streets full of flowerpots, where an awning has to respect the facade. Around Puerto de Estepona, the marina, there are plenty of flats and businesses with terraces. And in El Paraiso, Cancelada, Atalaya or the Selwo area, villas sit alongside new urbanisations with large terraces, gardens and pools, where an aluminium pergola also fits in well.
We come from our base in Velez-Malaga with our own technical team. We work with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, Cherubini motors, powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings, and we give you the quote in writing, with a fixed price and no obligation.

Respect for the facade
In the old town we suggest discreet awnings that sit happily alongside the flowerpots and window grilles without spoiling the look.
Fixings for the wind
We choose fixings to suit your wall and recommend a motor with a sensor where the wind from the Strait hits hard.
The people who measure, install
Our own team carries out the visit and the installation. No subcontractors.
Fixed price in writing
You know what you’ll pay before we start, with no surprises when the installation is finished.

Old town. Whitewashed houses, window grilles and balconies with flowerpots. A roller awning or a drop arm awning gives shade without hiding the flowers or the facade.
Puerto de Estepona. Flats with terraces, bars and restaurants close to the water. For businesses, hospitality awnings with fabric built for daily use.
El Paraiso. Villas and urbanisations with gardens. An aluminium pergola or a wide retractable awning creates an outdoor dining area.
Cancelada. Detached and terraced houses with terraces and patios. A motorised retractable awning usually works well here.
Atalaya. Urbanisations with communal areas and apartments. If your awning is getting on a bit, we offer fabric replacement or repairs.
Selwo. Residential developments with terraces open to the wind. Windbreaks with side guides on the sides so you can stay outside.
Wind from the Strait, sun and salt air: how to choose in Estepona
The weather in Estepona is kind for much of the year, but three factors decide which awning will last longest at your home.
Gusts that change quickly
Being so close to the Strait means the wind comes in hard and changes direction in no time. An awning left extended with nobody watching is what suffers most.
What we recommend: Cherubini motorisation with a wind sensor, depending on the model, and arms suited to the projection you need.
Lots of sun on open terraces
The new urbanisations have large, open terraces, in direct sun for hours with little natural shade.
What we recommend: a retractable awning or a cassette awning with light-coloured acrylic fabric, or a pergola if you want permanent shade.
Humidity and salt air by the sea
Around the marina and on the frontline, the breeze leaves salt on the frame and the fixings.
What we recommend: powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings and a simple clean of the fabric now and then. We explain how in how to clean an awning.
Your home in Estepona and the awning that suits it
Pick the option most like your home or business. It’s a pointer; we confirm it at the free visit.

What to check before installing in Estepona
Every installation is different. These are the three situations most worth checking in the municipality.
Estepona Town Hall
Retractable awnings usually involve simpler paperwork than fixed structures. A pergola of a certain size may need a licence or a “declaración responsable” (a sworn statement to the town hall); it depends on the municipal regulations and on each case.
Old town
Historic centres often have stricter conditions on how facades look. Before suggesting an awning for an old-town house, we check what can be installed.
New urbanisations
Communities in recent developments usually set a shared model and colour. We explain how it works in awnings in communities of owners.
We take care of the paperwork when it’s needed
If your case needs any procedure, we tell you at the visit and handle the paperwork. More detail in permits for awnings and pergolas.

Common questions about awnings in Estepona
Which awning can I put on a balcony in Estepona old town without spoiling the facade?
Estepona old town is known for its white streets full of flowerpots, and on those facades a poorly chosen awning sticks out a mile. The idea is to bring shade and coolness indoors without hiding the flowers, catching on the grilles or having the awning jut out too far over a narrow street.
For balconies with railings, the roller awning is a great choice: it drops vertically or projects slightly outwards on its arms, giving shade and privacy without encroaching on the street. If the window or balcony needs a bit more projection, the drop arm awning has arms that come down in front and leave room for the flowerpots.
Colour matters too. On a whitewashed facade, plain, understated tones or soft stripes usually look best, and with the Sauleda and Dickson sample books it’s easy to find one that goes with the window frames. We use a powder-coated aluminium frame and stainless fixings, which won’t leave rust stains on the white wall.
As it’s a historic centre, there may be conditions on how facades look. Before manufacturing we check what can be installed in your street and, if any procedure is needed, we handle the paperwork. There’s more information in permits for awnings and pergolas. And if you’d also like to sleep with the window open, ask about our made-to-measure fly screens.
How do I protect an awning from the wind off the Strait in Estepona?
In Estepona the wind arrives with more force than in much of the Costa del Sol, because it’s the municipality in our area closest to the Strait of Gibraltar. Gusts can appear suddenly and change direction in no time, especially on the open terraces of new urbanisations or near the marina, where there’s nothing to slow them down.
The most effective protection is for the awning to retract on its own. A Cherubini motor with a wind sensor detects gusts and retracts the fabric even when you’re out; the threshold is adjustable and the exact functions depend on the model. For holiday homes or rental apartments it’s practically essential. We explain it in awning motorisation.
The second point is the anchoring. An awning isn’t fixed the same way to a load-bearing wall as to a slab edge or a brick infill wall, and we choose fixings and brackets based on what we find at the visit, always with stainless hardware. We also adjust the awning’s projection so the arms work within sensible limits.
If you want to be outside when it’s windy, the trick is on the sides: a windbreak awning with side guides or a zip screen is held along its whole length and blocks the wind without taking away light. And for very exposed terraces, an aluminium pergola with a fixed roof is more stable than any fabric.
What determines the quote for an awning in Estepona?
Every awning is made to measure, so we don’t give generic prices: the quote depends on your terrace, balcony or business. What we can do is explain the variables that drive it, so you arrive at the visit with a clear idea and can compare quotes sensibly.
The factors are the type of awning (a roller awning for an old-town balcony is not the same as a retractable awning with a large projection for a villa in El Paraiso), the width and projection, the fabric chosen from the Sauleda and Dickson sample books, the frame colour and whether you want a Cherubini motor with a remote control, wall switch or sensors, depending on the model.
Things you see when measuring also count: the wall material it’s anchored to, whether a special bracket is needed to clear a cornice, the working height, or whether several coordinated awnings are needed to cover a long terrace. In urbanisations with community rules, the model and colour may already be decided.
The visit, measuring and advice are free. Afterwards you get a written quote, with no obligation and a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. If your current awning just has worn fabric, compare first with fabric replacement, and if you’re torn between systems, read which awning keeps the heat out best.
Awning or pergola for a villa in El Paraiso or Cancelada?
The villas and detached houses in El Paraiso or Cancelada usually have a terrace, a garden and, very often, a pool. The usual question is whether to cover that space with an awning or a pergola, and the answer depends on how you want to use it and how much wind it gets.
An awning is the flexible option: you extend it when the sun’s fierce and retract it the rest of the time, with no fixed structures in the garden. For large terraces a retractable awning or a cassette awning fits well and, if the projection is large, support legs add extra support. With a motor and wind sensor, depending on the model, it retracts on its own.
A pergola creates a permanent outdoor room. The aluminium pergola is lightweight, maintenance-free and available in a wood effect; the bioclimatic pergola, with adjustable louvres, lets you control sun and ventilation and protects you from the rain, depending on the model. Against the wind from the Strait, a well-anchored fixed structure is more stable than fabric.
Bear in mind that a fixed pergola may need some kind of permit from the town hall depending on its size and location, which we check with you. At the free visit we look at which way the plot faces and give you a written quote for the option that fits, or for both so you can compare. If you’d like more ideas, our pergolas page covers every type.
What do I do if my urbanisation in Estepona requires a specific awning model?
It’s very common in Estepona’s new developments, in areas such as Atalaya, Selwo or Cancelada. To keep the facade looking uniform, the community usually agrees on a type of awning, a fabric colour and sometimes the frame colour. It’s not a problem: you just need to know those conditions before ordering the awning.
The first step is to ask the property administrator or the community president for the community’s resolution or internal rules, if there are any. With that information, at the visit we suggest a system that meets what’s been agreed and also works well on your particular terrace. If the resolution specifies a fabric, we look for that reference, or the closest match, in the Sauleda and Dickson sample books.
If nothing has been decided yet and the community wants everything to match, we can help the whole urbanisation with a shared proposal, measuring for each home and a coordinated installation. We explain it in awnings for communities of owners, and in our guide to the Spanish Horizontal Property Act and awnings you’ll see what needs to be approved.
In the meantime, if your current awning is past its best but the community wants the look kept the same, sometimes new fabric in the same colour is all it takes. We’ll quote for it in writing, with a fixed price and no obligation.
Do you repair awnings in Estepona installed by another company?
Yes. Our after-sales service also looks after awnings fitted by other installers, which is really useful if you bought a home in Estepona that already had awnings or if the company that installed them no longer responds. We check the awning, tell you what’s wrong and whether it’s worth repairing.
The most common faults are down to wind and sun: fabric torn by a gust, faded fabric, arms that have lost tension, loose brackets or motors that have stopped responding. We also see bent roller tubes and rusty fixings on awnings that were installed without thinking about the salt air. In many cases it’s enough to replace the damaged part or make new fabric to measure in Sauleda or Dickson cloth.
Before we touch anything you get a written quote with a fixed price. If we find the frame is so worn that it isn’t worth it, we’ll tell you clearly and explain the alternatives, such as a cassette awning, which protects the fabric better on the coast.
If your awning is manual, using the repair as a chance to motorise it with a Cherubini motor and wind sensor, depending on the model, is usually a good investment in Estepona. There’s more information in awning repairs and new fabric. The quickest way is to send us a photo on WhatsApp: we can often point you in the right direction before we come out.
Do you install awnings for bars and restaurants at Puerto de Estepona?
Yes. Around Puerto de Estepona and in the old-town streets, the terrace is key for many bars and restaurants, and every metre of shade counts. We work with hospitality businesses and shops, and we plan each project around the number of tables, the wind that comes in and the look of the venue.
For terraces right against the facade, a wide retractable awning and the more rigid monobloc awning work well. If wind is a regular problem, side screens with windbreaks with side guides keep the tables full without losing light, and some models can have clear windows.
A business’s fabric takes more punishment than a home’s: it’s opened and closed every day and has to keep looking good. We use Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, and on some of them your venue’s branding can be added, depending on the model. What’s more, clean, well-tensioned fabric makes the terrace look better from the street. A Cherubini motor with a wall switch or remote control makes opening the terrace every morning much easier.
If the terrace is on public land, the awning has to fit the town hall’s terrace permit; we advise you and handle the paperwork when it’s needed. We try to install outside opening hours. There are more details in awnings for businesses and hospitality.
What’s the process in Estepona, from asking for a quote to having the awning installed?
It starts with a message or a call. You can use the form on this page, message us on WhatsApp or call us Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm. If you send us photos of the facade and some rough measurements, even better: that way we can prepare the options before we come.
Then we arrange the visit. We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga and group our Estepona visits together so we can give each home the time it needs. We measure up, check the wall or slab, look at which way it faces and the wind, and show you the fabric sample books. The visit, measuring and advice are free and don’t commit you to anything.
Afterwards you get the quote in writing, with a fixed price and often in under 24 hours. If you accept it, we make the awning to measure and agree the installation date with you; it’s carried out by our own technical team, with no subcontractors. When we finish we show you how to use it and, if it has a Cherubini motor, we programme the remote and the sensors.
And we don’t disappear afterwards: materials come with a 2-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer and product, the structure and installation are guaranteed too, and our after-sales service handles servicing and adjustments. To keep your awning looking like new, we share tips in how to clean an awning. If you’d like to get to know us first, see about us.
