The basics

Why choose aluminium pergolas in Malaga

Aluminium pergolas in Malaga have become the most practical choice for anyone who wants shade without having to worry about anything else. Aluminium is light, very stable and, with a good powder coating, it won’t corrode or fade in the sun. Once it’s up, you clean it with soap and water a couple of times a year and that’s about it.

An aluminium pergola can take several kinds of roof. With fixed louvres you get permanent, ventilated shade with no mechanisms to maintain. With a sliding canopy you pull the shade back when you want the sun and extend it when the heat is on. And if you’d like to turn the louvres with a remote control, the next step up is the bioclimatic pergola, which is also made of aluminium.

You choose the finish: white, anthracite, sand tones or wood effect, which gives you the warm look of wood without the upkeep. On the coast we always work with powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings, because salt air shows no mercy to ordinary screws or poorly protected profiles.

With fixed louvres

The roof has aluminium louvres set at a fixed angle that blocks direct sun and lets the air flow. No motor and no fabric: it’s the lowest-maintenance option for porches and terraces that need shade all summer long.

With a sliding canopy

The aluminium frame supports a Sauleda or Dickson canopy that slides along guides. Pull it back in winter to enjoy the sun and extend it in summer. It can be manual or have a Cherubini motor. More on our retractable roof pergola page.

Wood-effect aluminium

Powder-coated profiles with a finish that reproduces the grain of wood. It suits rustic houses and gardens, and never needs sanding or varnishing. If you’re undecided, compare it with our wooden pergolas.

Any of the three can be wall-mounted or freestanding on four posts. If you’re going to anchor it to the wall, take a look at our wall-mounted pergolas. And if you want to close in the sides to use it in winter, the aluminium frame can take a zip screen, windbreaks or glass enclosures.

Powder-coated aluminium for the coast. On the seafront, salt air attacks the fixings and any poorly protected cut edges first. That’s why we use powder-coated profiles and stainless fixings, and take care over the finishing. Materials come with a 2-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer and the product, and on top of that we stand behind the structure and the installation.

Aluminium pergola with fixed louvres or a canopy?

It’s the question we hear most. This is how the two perform day to day on a terrace on the coast.

ShadePermanent, set by the angle of the louvresYou put it out and take it in whenever you like
Winter sunLittle gets through; the shade staysPull the canopy back and all the sun comes in

If you want the best of both, adjustable shade and protection from the rain, the answer is a bioclimatic pergola. And if you’re wondering which roof keeps the heat out best, we explain it in which awning keeps the heat out best. You’ll find every type on our pergolas in Malaga page.

    Price

Aluminium pergola prices: what affects them

Every frame is made to measure for one particular place, so a generic figure would only mislead you. This is what makes an aluminium pergola cost more or less:

SizeA bigger area means more profiles, more roof and, beyond a certain size, more posts.
Type of roofFixed louvres, a manual sliding canopy or a motorised canopy.
FinishPlain colours or wood effect, depending on the manufacturer’s colour chart.
Wall-mounted or freestandingResting it on the facade saves posts and floor anchoring.
Enclosures and extrasZip screen, windbreaks, glass or LED lighting, depending on the model.
Anchoring and accessType of floor or facade, height and how easy it is to get the materials up.

Aluminium pergolas in Malaga, the Axarquia and the Costa Tropical

From Velez-Malaga we come out to measure free of charge across the whole province and the Costa Tropical in Granada. On the seafront, from Torre del Mar to Estepona, powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings are essential; inland in the Axarquia and in Granada city, what people value most is shade that lets the air through on days of hot terral wind and dry heat.

Frequently asked questions about aluminium pergolas in Malaga

What pushes up the price of an aluminium pergola in Malaga?

The first thing to know is that there’s no catalogue price for aluminium pergolas in Malaga that fits every terrace. That’s why we don’t give guide prices: we’d rather measure up and give you a real figure. What we can explain is which items drive the quote, so you understand why two similar pergolas can cost different amounts.

The area carries the most weight: more square metres covered means more profiles, more roof and, beyond a certain size, more posts. Next comes the type of roof. An aluminium pergola with fixed louvres has no mechanisms; one with a canopy needs guides, crossbars and the fabric itself, and if you want it with a Cherubini motor the automation is added on top. The finish counts too: plain colours and wood effect depend on each manufacturer’s colour chart.

Some costs only become clear at the visit. Anchoring to a concrete facade isn’t the same as fixing to a wall with delicate cladding, and assembling at garden level isn’t the same as carrying the materials up to a penthouse with no lift. Side enclosures and lighting are extras you can add now or later on.

We measure for free and give you a written quote with no obligation and a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. You can request it using the form or, if you’d like to compare with other systems, take a look at our pergolas in Malaga.

Is a wood-effect aluminium pergola worth it instead of real wood?

It depends on what matters most to you. If you love the warm look of wood but don’t want to sand and varnish every so often, a wood-effect aluminium pergola is a very sensible choice. The profiles are powder-coated with a finish that reproduces the colour and grain of wood, and the result looks great on rustic houses, fincas and in gardens.

The big advantage is maintenance. Powder-coated aluminium doesn’t rot, doesn’t crack in the sun, isn’t attacked by insects and doesn’t absorb moisture. On the Malaga coast, where salt air and sun take a heavy toll, that means a pergola that keeps its looks for years with nothing more than a wash with soap and water.

Real wood has other qualities: the feel, the smell, the sense of a natural material and the chance to work it into more handcrafted shapes. For many people, that makes the care it needs worthwhile. We explain it in detail on our wooden pergolas page, where we compare the two options.

Our practical advice: on the seafront and on terraces with lots of direct sun, wood-effect aluminium is usually the worry-free choice. In a sheltered garden inland in the Axarquia, wood treated for outdoor use can be perfect. At the free visit we’ll show you finish samples and weigh it up together. Book it using the form.

Does an aluminium pergola corrode near the sea?

Aluminium doesn’t rust like iron, and that’s one of the reasons so many pergolas on the coast are made from it. But that doesn’t mean the sea air has no effect. Without protection, aluminium can pit and lose its looks, and the first things to suffer on the seafront are usually the fixings and any unfinished cut edges.

That’s why we always talk about powder-coated aluminium for the coast. The powder coating forms a protective layer over the profile that resists salt air and UV. And we use stainless steel for the screws, anchors and connectors, because an ordinary screw soon rusts by the sea and stains the frame.

The maintenance we recommend is simple: clean the frame with fresh water and a mild soap a couple of times a year, a bit more if you live right by the beach, and avoid scourers or abrasive products that could scratch the coating. If the pergola has a canopy, our blog explains how to clean and look after the fabric.

If you already have a pergola, whether we fitted it or another installer did, and you can see rusty screws or damaged profiles, our after-sales service can check it over and replace whatever parts are needed. We can also replace the canopy if it’s worn by the sun.

What colours can I choose for the aluminium frame?

The colours available depend on the manufacturer and the model, but you can usually choose between plain shades such as white, anthracite or sand tones, and wood-effect finishes. At the visit we’ll show you the colour chart for the model that suits you, so you can see it in the real light on your terrace.

Choosing a colour isn’t just a matter of taste. White reflects more sun, stays cooler and goes well with the whitewashed houses of the Axarquia. Anthracite looks very contemporary on penthouses and modern homes, and hides dust better. Sand tones and wood effect blend in nicely with gardens and stone or exposed-brick facades.

If you live in an urbanisation or an apartment building, check first whether your community has an approved colour for awnings and pergolas. It’s very common on the Costa del Sol for the community rules to set a shade so every terrace matches. We explain it in awnings and pergolas in communities of owners.

A practical tip: if the pergola has a canopy, choose the frame colour and the fabric colour at the same time. We work with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics and will help you match them. You can try out combinations now in the online designer on this page and then request your quote with your design.

Does an aluminium pergola with fixed louvres keep the rain off?

Not completely, and it’s worth knowing before you choose. An aluminium pergola with fixed louvres is designed to give shade and let the air through. The louvres are angled to block direct sun but leave gaps for the air to circulate, so when it rains some of the water gets through. In a light shower you’ll barely notice; in heavy rain, the floor underneath will get wet.

If you want a terrace you can use on rainy days too, there are two routes. The first is a bioclimatic pergola: its louvres rotate and, when you close them, they form a continuous roof that channels the water into a hidden gutter and down through the posts. The second is a pergola with a sliding canopy, which keeps off light rain depending on the type of fabric and the pitch, although in a downpour it’s best to pull it back.

For a porch you want to turn into an extra room, there are also fixed roofs in panels or glass, and sides closed in with aluminium and glass enclosures.

On the Malaga coast it only rains on a few days a year, but when it does, it pours. That’s why at the visit we ask how you’ll use the terrace in autumn and winter, and recommend the roof that genuinely meets that need, without selling you more than you need.

Does aluminium get very hot in summer under the Malaga sun?

Aluminium in the sun gets hot to the touch, like any metal, but that doesn’t mean the pergola makes you hotter. How cool it feels depends mainly on two things: how much direct radiation the roof blocks and whether the hot air can escape through the top.

This is where an aluminium pergola with fixed louvres has a clear advantage. The louvres stop direct sun but leave gaps for hot air to rise and escape, so no pocket of heat forms underneath. With a canopy extended, the shade is denser, but heat tends to build up if the terrace is closed in on other sides. We explain it in our article which awning keeps the heat out best.

Colour makes a difference too. A frame and louvres in white or light shades reflect more light and stay cooler than anthracite. And orientation counts: on west-facing terraces, where the afternoon sun comes in very low, it can be worth adding a vertical awning on the side that bears the brunt.

At the visit we look at what time of day the sun hits your terrace and from which side, and from there we suggest the louvre angle, colour and enclosures that will keep you coolest.

Does a freestanding aluminium pergola need building work in the garden?

It needs good anchoring, which isn’t always the same as building work. A freestanding aluminium pergola stands on four posts without resting on the house, so all its stability depends on how those posts are fixed to the ground. That’s why it’s the first thing we look at during the visit.

If the post stands on firm tiling or a concrete slab in good condition, it can normally be anchored directly with the right fixings. If it stands on soil, lawn or gravel, a solid base needs to be created for each post. And if the floor is a waterproofed roof, as on some penthouses, we need to find a solution that doesn’t compromise the waterproofing. In every case we use stainless fixings.

The wind matters too. A freestanding pergola in the middle of an open garden catches the wind from every side, and in areas exposed to the levante or poniente the posts and anchoring need to be sized with a bigger margin. If you’d rather avoid posts on one side, a wall-mounted pergola may suit you better.

As for permits, a fixed pergola anchored to the ground may need a town hall procedure, depending on the municipality and its size. We check it for you and, if needed, handle the paperwork. There’s more information in permits to install a pergola in Malaga and Granada.

Can I close in or extend an aluminium pergola later on?

Yes, and it’s one of the advantages of aluminium: it’s a modular system that allows for plenty of additions. Ideally, tell us from the start, even if you’re not installing them yet, so the frame is ready and the additions fit in without patching.

The most common addition is closing in the sides. You can fit a zip screen that lowers with a remote and stays put in the wind, a windbreak awning with side guides with clear fabric so you don’t lose the views, or sliding glass panels. With the sides closed in, you can use the pergola in winter and on afternoons when the levante blows.

A sliding canopy can also be motorised with a Cherubini motor and remote control, or you can add LED lighting, depending on the model. And if, over the years, you want more than a fixed roof can give you, in some cases switching to an adjustable louvred roof can be looked into, although it usually works out better to plan a bioclimatic pergola from the start.

If your aluminium pergola was installed by another company, we’ll still look after you: our after-sales service checks installations by other installers and tells you what can be added with full guarantees. Get in touch using the form with a few photos of the frame and the anchoring, and we’ll advise you before we come to see it.
