Made-to-measure awnings in Marbella

Awnings in Marbella that stand up to the wind and give real shade

Fitting awnings in Marbella isn’t the same as anywhere else on the coast. Here the levante and poniente blow hard because the Strait is so close, terraces are large and many homes are shut up for weeks or months at a time. That’s why every awning we propose is designed to retract in time, resist the salt air and work even when you’re not there.

The municipality is huge and very varied. In Nueva Andalucia, Rio Real or Elviria it’s mostly villas and detached houses with gardens and pools; on the Golden Mile and in Puerto Banus, penthouses with large terraces and sea views; in the old town and San Pedro Alcantara, flats and houses with balconies; and all along the coast, restaurants that live off their terraces. Each profile calls for a different system. If you’re after a fixed structure, take a look at our pergolas in Marbella page.

We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga with our own technical team, Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, Cherubini motors, powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings. The home visit and measuring are free, and the quote comes in writing with a fixed price.

The Marbella climate

Levante, poniente and seaside sun: what an awning in Marbella needs

Marbella has a mild climate, but being so close to the Strait puts the wind centre stage. This is what we look at before suggesting a system.

Wind from the Strait

The levante (easterly) and poniente (westerly) arrive with more force than elsewhere on the coast and change from day to day. A large awning left extended in a gust puts the fabric and arms at risk.

What we recommend: a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor, depending on the model, and windbreaks with side guides on exposed terraces.

Huge terraces in the sun

Villas and penthouses have terraces many metres long facing the sea, in direct sun from midday. Covering them with a single awning calls for a sturdy system.

What we recommend: a monobloc awning or several awnings fitted side by side and, if you want permanent shade, a made-to-measure pergola in Marbella.

Salt air and humidity

In Las Chapas, Elviria, the Golden Mile or Puerto Banus, the sea breeze leaves salt on profiles, screws and fabric, and speeds up corrosion on anything that isn’t prepared for it.

What we recommend: powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings and a cassette awning so the fabric stays protected when it’s retracted.

For a villa in Marbella

At a villa the terrace is usually large and the house may stand empty for weeks. You want to cover a wide area with a stable system that retracts on its own if the wind gets up.

Permits in Marbella

Town hall, urbanisations and terraces: permits in Marbella

Before we manufacture anything, we check which procedure may apply to your installation. These are the three most common situations in the municipality.

Marbella Town Hall

A retractable awning usually involves simpler paperwork than a fixed structure. What applies depends on the municipal by-laws, the location and the size, and that includes San Pedro Alcantara, which is part of the municipality.

Urbanisations and communities

Urbanisations and communities often have rules on how facades look and which colours are allowed. We explain how to approach it in our guide to awnings in communities of owners.

Bar and restaurant terraces

If the awning covers a terrace on public land, it has to fit the town hall’s permit to use that space. We go over it with you before suggesting a system.

We help you with the paperwork

If your awning needs any procedure, we explain which one and handle the paperwork when it’s needed. Read more in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Frequently asked questions about awnings in Marbella

Which awning best withstands the levante and poniente in Marbella?

Marbella is close enough to the Strait of Gibraltar for the wind to be the number one enemy of any awning. The levante comes in strong, sustained gusts, the poniente sometimes arrives all at once and, in open areas such as Las Chapas, Elviria or the Golden Mile, there are no buildings to break it. It’s best to accept from the outset that no fabric awning is made to stay extended in a storm.

So the first thing isn’t the model, but how it retracts. For awnings in Marbella we almost always recommend a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor: when it detects gusts above the level you set, it retracts the fabric even if nobody’s home. It’s explained on our awning motorisation page, and exactly how it works depends on the motor and sensor model.

As for systems, the cassette awning stores the fabric and arms inside an aluminium case, and the monobloc awning adds rigidity across large widths, which is common on villa terraces. If you want to stay outside when the wind is blowing, the answer lies on the sides: a zip screen is held in guides along its whole length and doesn’t flap.

The other half is the anchoring. We check what the wall or floor slab is made of, choose the fixings to suit it and use stainless hardware so the salt air doesn’t weaken it over the years. And if the terrace is so exposed that fabric makes no sense, we’ll tell you frankly and suggest a fixed alternative.

What affects the price of awnings in Marbella for a villa or a penthouse?

We don’t publish prices because every awning is made to measure, and in Marbella the differences between one home and another are enormous: an awning for the balcony of a flat in the old town has nothing in common with one covering the terrace of a villa in Nueva Andalucia. The serious approach is to measure, listen to what you need and give you a written quote with a fixed price.

The biggest factors are the system (folding arm, cassette, monobloc, drop arm or roller), the width and projection measurements, the fabric you choose from the Sauleda and Dickson sample books, the frame colour and whether you add a Cherubini motor with a remote control, wall switch or sensors, depending on the model. On large terraces it also matters whether one awning does the job or several fitted side by side.

Some details only show up at the visit: the type of wall or slab to anchor to, whether any special bracket is needed, the working height on a penthouse or access to the property. In urbanisations with rules on appearance, the model and colour may be set by the community, and that also shapes the choice.

The home visit and measuring are free and with no obligation, and you’ll often have your quote in under 24 hours. If you already have an awning that’s simply worn, before deciding take a look at awning repairs and new fabric, which often solves the problem for quite a bit less.

Can I motorise an awning on a house in Marbella that stands empty for months?

Yes, and in Marbella it’s one of the best decisions you can make. Many homes in the municipality are second homes or houses that are shut up for part of the year, and an awning left extended by mistake, or that nobody retracts when the levante blows in, can end up with torn fabric or damaged arms.

A Cherubini motor with a wind sensor retracts the awning automatically when gusts exceed the programmed level. Depending on the model, there are also sun sensors that extend it when the facade heats up, which helps stop the inside of the house building up so much heat even when you’re away. And with a single remote or wall switch you can operate several awnings at once.

If your current awning is manual and in good condition, it can usually be motorised without replacing the whole thing. At the visit we check the roller tube, fabric and arms, see whether there’s a power point nearby and tell you which motor fits. You’ll find all the details on our awning motorisation page and in our article on how to choose an awning motor.

For houses that are shut up for long periods we also recommend systems that protect the fabric when retracted, such as the cassette awning, and materials that withstand salt air with no maintenance: powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings. That way, when you come back, the awning will be just as you left it. And if it ever needs a check-up, our after-sales service will take care of it.

Do you install awnings for restaurants in Puerto Banus and on Marbella’s seafront promenade?

Yes. Hospitality is a big part of life in Marbella, and a terrace well protected from the sun and wind means more tables filled for more months of the year. We work with restaurants, bars and shops across the municipality, from Puerto Banus to the old town, and on this very page you can see a restaurant in Marbella where we installed a retractable awning with windbreaks with side guides.

Every terrace has its own solution. If the facade allows anchoring, a wide retractable or monobloc awning covers lots of tables; when the projection is large, telescopic support legs add extra support. To block side winds without losing light, windbreaks with side guides are the most practical solution, and they can have clear windows depending on the model.

In hospitality the fabric works every day: it has to hold its colour, be easy to clean and look good. We use Sauleda and Dickson fabrics and, with some of them, it can be personalised with your venue’s branding, depending on the model. With a Cherubini motor, opening and closing at the start and end of service is no longer a chore.

If the terrace is on public land, the installation has to fit the town hall’s terrace permit; we advise you and handle the paperwork when it’s needed. We try to install outside service hours so we don’t interrupt your business. More information in awnings for businesses and hospitality.

Can I replace the fabric on my awning in Marbella without replacing the frame?

In most cases, yes. With Marbella’s sun and the salt air on the coast, the fabric is the first thing to age: it fades, gets dirty, comes apart at the seams or tears in a gust. The aluminium frame, on the other hand, usually lasts much longer if it’s well powder-coated and the fixings are stainless. Replacing just the fabric restores the awning’s look and function for much less than a new one.

We also do it on awnings fitted by another company. We come out, check the arms, roller tube, brackets and the motor, if there is one, and tell you clearly whether it’s worth it. The new fabric is made to measure in Sauleda or Dickson cloth, and you can take the opportunity to change colour or switch from plain to stripes: it’s an easy way to freshen up the facade of a villa or a penthouse.

If during the check we spot a tired arm or a faulty motor, we include it in the same quote, in writing and with a fixed price. And if the awning is manual, it’s a good time to motorise it with a Cherubini motor and wind sensor, depending on the model. It’s all on awning repairs and new fabric.

To make the new fabric last, it’s worth cleaning it now and then and not retracting it while it’s wet. We share practical tips in how to clean and look after an awning. If you send us a photo on WhatsApp, we can often point you in the right direction before we come out.

Awning or pergola for the pool area of a villa in Nueva Andalucia?

It depends on how you use that space. If you want shade now and then, to retract it when you don’t need it and keep the garden clear, an awning is the most flexible option. If you’re looking for a permanent outdoor room with steady shade that copes better with the wind and can be used in the rain too, a pergola makes more sense. In Nueva Andalucia, with large plots and pools, both approaches work.

If you go for an awning, in pool areas the monobloc awning anchored to the facade usually works well thanks to its rigidity across large widths, as does the retractable awning with telescopic support legs when the projection is very large. With a motor and wind sensor, depending on the model, they retract on their own if the levante picks up.

If what you want is a fixed structure by the water, you’ll find all the options explained, with their advantages for villas and gardens, on our pergolas in Marbella page: bioclimatic pergolas with adjustable louvres, aluminium, wooden or retractable roof pergolas. There we also explain which procedures usually apply to a fixed structure in the municipality.

It’s best to see it on site. At the free visit we look at where the sun falls at each time of day, where the wind comes from and where you actually spend time in summer, and we give you a written quote for the option that fits, or for both if you’d like to compare them.

Do I need permission from my community or the town hall to put up an awning in Marbella or San Pedro Alcantara?

It depends on the type of installation and where you live. A retractable awning on a home usually involves simpler paperwork than a fixed structure, but what counts is Marbella Town Hall’s regulations, which also apply in San Pedro Alcantara because it’s part of the same municipality. Those regulations can change, which is why we check them in every case.

In practice, the most common constraint is the community of owners. In apartment blocks and urbanisations the facade is a shared element, and communities often have an agreed model, fabric colour or type of frame to keep everything looking uniform. Before installing, it’s worth checking the community’s statutes or the owners’ meeting resolutions.

If you need to raise it with your community, our guide to awnings in communities of owners explains how it works under the Spanish Horizontal Property Act (Ley de Propiedad Horizontal), and on awnings for communities you’ll see how we help make a whole facade match. Businesses with a terrace on public land also need to fit the town hall’s permit.

You don’t have to sort it out on your own. If you’re torn between an awning and a fixed structure, bear in mind that a pergola usually involves more paperwork than a retractable awning. At the visit we look at where the awning will go, tell you which procedure may apply and handle the paperwork when it’s needed. There’s more information in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

How do you arrange the visit and installation in Marbella if your base is in Velez-Malaga?

We work across the whole Costa del Sol from our base in Velez-Malaga, and Marbella is one of the towns we cover as a matter of course. We plan visits by area, so we can give you the time a proper measuring visit needs, whether you live in the old town, in San Pedro Alcantara or on an urbanisation in Las Chapas.

You can request the visit using the form on this page, on WhatsApp or by phone, Monday to Saturday from 8am to 8pm. If you send us a few photos of the terrace and some rough measurements first, we’ll arrive with options already in mind and the right fabric sample book. If it’s a second home, we’ll find a date when you’re here or when someone you trust can let us in.

After the visit, which is free and with no obligation, you get a written quote with a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. If you accept it, the awning is made to measure and installed by our own technical team, with no subcontractors, on the date agreed in writing.

And we’re still there afterwards: materials come with a 2-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer and product, the structure and installation have their own guarantee, and our after-sales service handles servicing and repairs. If you’d like to know more about how we work, visit our company page.
