Which pergola do you need? The types of pergola, in plain English
A pergola is a structure of posts and beams that covers a terrace, a porch or part of the garden. What changes from one type to another is the roof and the material, and that decides how you’ll live in that space. Anyone looking for pergolas in Malaga almost always wants the same thing: real shade when the sun is at its fiercest, a cool spot to eat outdoors and something that lasts for years by the sea without giving trouble.
There are types of pergola for every situation. A bioclimatic pergola has louvres you turn with a remote control; an aluminium pergola with fixed louvres gives permanent shade with no maintenance; a retractable roof pergola has a sliding canopy you pull back when you want the sun; a wall-mounted pergola uses the facade for support; and a wooden pergola brings a warm feel that suits country houses and fincas. On top of that, any of them can be closed in at the sides.
At QUBRE we make made-to-measure pergolas: we don’t start from a kit, we start from your space. We look at which way it faces, where the wind comes in, where it can be anchored and where the rainwater will run off, and from there we recommend the system that makes sense for you, even if it isn’t the most expensive.

Six types of pergola for six ways to enjoy your terrace
Each system solves a different problem. Here are the essentials of each one; you’ll find all the details on its own page.

Bioclimatic pergolas
A roof of adjustable aluminium louvres: open them for airflow, tilt them to block the sun and close them when it rains. It’s the most complete option. See bioclimatic pergolas.

Aluminium pergolas
A powder-coated aluminium frame with a fixed-louvre or fabric roof. Lightweight, ready for salt air and available in a wood-effect finish. See aluminium pergolas.

Wall-mounted pergolas
Anchored to the facade and supported on two posts. They extend your living room outdoors and make the most of every centimetre of terrace. See wall-mounted pergolas.

Wooden pergolas
Natural warmth for gardens, barbecue areas and country houses in the Axarquia, with wood treated for outdoor use and its maintenance explained. See wooden pergolas.

Retractable roof pergola
A fixed frame with a sliding canopy you pull out when the sun is fierce and fold back when you want open sky. See retractable roof pergolas.

Pergola with enclosures
Any pergola can be closed in with glass, a zip screen or windbreaks so you can use it in winter and when the levante blows. See terrace and porch enclosures.
All six systems can be combined: a wall-mounted pergola can be aluminium with a bioclimatic roof, and a wooden one can have a sliding canopy. If you run a business, take a look at our awnings and pergolas for bars and restaurants too. And if your pergola was fitted by another company and needs fixing, we’ll still look after you with our repairs and fabric replacement service.

Send a photo on WhatsAppPergola or awning? When each one makes sense
Both give shade, but they don’t solve the same problem. This is how they perform on a terrace on the coast.
| Feature | Pergola | Awning |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Its own posts and beams, fixed | Anchored to the facade and retracts fully |
| Area | Covers large areas, even in the middle of the garden | Limited by how far the arms extend |
| Wind | A stable structure; with louvres, a rigid roof | Has to be retracted in strong gusts |
| Rain | With closed louvres or the right canopy, it gives protection depending on the model | Not designed for rain |
| Side enclosures | Takes zip screens, windbreaks or glass | A valance or a separate vertical awning |
| Permits | As it’s fixed, it may need a town hall procedure | Usually simpler, depending on the municipality |
| Investment | Higher, designed to last many years | More modest |
If your terrace is small or you only need shade for a few hours, a retractable awning or a cassette awning may be all you need. You’ll find every model on our awnings in Malaga page, and on the blog we explain which awning keeps the heat out best.
Pergola prices in Malaga: what affects them
Every pergola is built for one particular place, so we don’t give generic figures that would only mislead you. These are the factors that drive the quote:

Frequently asked questions about pergolas in Malaga
What type of pergola is best for my home in Malaga?
It depends on how you’ll use the space and how much looking after you want to do. Before we talk about models, at the visit we ask you three things: which months you’ll use it, what time of day the sun hits it and which wind blows in. With those answers, choosing between the different types of pergola becomes much clearer.
If you want to use the terrace all year round, in sunshine, in the rain and at night, the most complete option is a bioclimatic pergola, because you control the light by turning the louvres and close it when it rains. If you’re after fixed shade in summer and want to forget about maintenance, an aluminium pergola with fixed louvres is hard to beat. And if you like sunbathing in winter and having shade in August, the sliding canopy on a retractable roof pergola gives you both.
The location matters too. On a penthouse or a terrace right off the living room, the usual choice is a pergola fixed to the facade; in the middle of the garden or beside the pool, a freestanding one. And if your home is a finca or a rustic house in the Axarquia, wood often suits the setting better.
You don’t need to arrive with your mind made up. Try the online designer on this page, request a free visit using the form and we’ll recommend the option that makes sense for you, with a fixed-price quote so you can compare at your leisure.
How much does a made-to-measure pergola cost and what affects the price?
We don’t publish guide prices for pergolas because each one is built for a specific place, and a price per square metre taken from the internet usually bears little resemblance to what you end up paying. What we can explain is what makes a made-to-measure pergola cost more or less, so you can compare quotes properly.
The first factor is the type of roof: an adjustable louvred roof has a mechanism and a motor; a sliding canopy has guides and crossbars; fixed louvres need only profiles. Then comes the area you want to cover, the material (powder-coated aluminium, wood effect or treated wood) and whether the structure is wall-mounted or freestanding, because a freestanding pergola needs more posts and more anchoring.
Extras add to it too: a motor with remote control, wind or rain sensors, LED lighting or side enclosures such as a zip screen. And there are costs you can only see at the visit: the type of floor or facade, the height, or how hard it is to get the materials up to a penthouse.
That’s why we measure for free and give you a written quote with no obligation and a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. What you sign is what you pay, with no surprises halfway through the job. You can request it using the form or on our contact page.
Do you install pergolas across the whole Axarquia or just in Velez-Malaga?
Across the whole area. Our head office is in Velez-Malaga and from there we go out to measure and install pergolas in the Axarquia: Torre del Mar, Nerja, Torrox, Rincon de la Victoria, Algarrobo and the inland villages. Being close by means we can come and see your terrace at no cost and get back to you quickly if you ever need after-sales service, whether for your pergola or for an installation by another company.
The Axarquia has two very different sides. On the coast, from Torre del Mar to Nerja, salt air and the levante call the shots, so we work with powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings and calculate the anchoring carefully. Inland, among the olive groves, vineyards and fincas, the hot terral wind bites harder in summer and you want shade that lets the air through; there, bioclimatic and wooden pergolas work really well.
We also know the kinds of homes in the area: whitewashed houses with patios, villas with pools, flats with sea-view terraces and penthouses in the centre of Velez. Each one calls for a different solution, and that’s exactly what we look at during the visit.
If you live in or around Velez-Malaga, our awnings and pergolas in Velez-Malaga page has more local information. To book your free measuring visit, use the form and tell us which village you’re in.
Do you install pergolas in Marbella and the rest of the Costa del Sol?
Yes. As well as the Axarquia, we install pergolas in Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Benalmadena, Torremolinos and Malaga city, with the same in-house technical team and the same terms: free home visit and measuring, a written quote with a fixed price and installation with no subcontractors.
On the Costa del Sol there are lots of urbanisations with design rules, communities with a set frame colour and villas with large gardens. That’s why we often fit freestanding pergolas beside the pool, bioclimatic pergolas on penthouses with views and aluminium structures in colours that respect what’s already on the facade. If your community has an approved model, we’ll work to it.
The climate counts too. The levante and poniente winds are felt all along the Costa del Sol, and on the seafront salt air is there all year round. We size posts and anchoring for the wind at each location and use materials built for the coast: powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings.
There’s more local information on our Marbella, Estepona and Fuengirola pages. If your home is in another town on the Costa del Sol, ask us anyway using the form: we’ll tell you when we can come and measure and, if you send us a few photos of the terrace first, we’ll arrive at the visit with specific proposals.
Do you also work in Granada city and on the Costa Tropical?
Yes. We install pergolas in Granada city and its metropolitan area, and right across the Costa Tropical: Motril, Salobreña and Almuñécar. From Velez-Malaga the Costa Tropical is only a short drive along the motorway, and we work there exactly as we do in Malaga: free visit, fixed-price quote and installation by our own team.
Granada city has a very different climate from the coast. Summers bring intense dry heat and winter nights are cold, so a pergola there has to give plenty of shade in July and let the sun through in January. That’s why bioclimatic pergolas and sliding canopy pergolas are so practical: you decide when there’s shade. On the Costa Tropical, on the other hand, the challenge is salt air and humidity, just as in the Axarquia.
Many homes in the Granada metropolitan area are detached houses with a patio or garden, where a freestanding or wall-mounted pergola fits in well. In Motril and Almuñécar there are lots of flats with sea-view terraces, which call for lightweight structures that are well anchored and made from materials that can handle the sea air.
If you’re on the Costa Tropical, there’s local information on our Motril page. And if you want to know what paperwork your town hall asks for, we go through it in permits for awnings and pergolas in Malaga and Granada.
Which pergola copes best with the levante and poniente winds?
More than any particular type, what makes a pergola stand up to the wind is being properly designed for its location: the number of posts and profiles for the model, the type of anchoring and how exposed it is. An identical pergola can be perfect in a sheltered patio and fall short on a frontline penthouse in a levante.
That said, the roof does make a difference. Aluminium louvres, both fixed and adjustable, form a rigid roof that handles gusts better than fabric. The sliding canopy on a retractable roof pergola is held in guides, but in strong wind it’s best to pull it back, just as you would with an awning. If your terrace is very exposed, a motor with a wind sensor retracts it automatically when the wind blows.
Side enclosures also help you enjoy the terrace when it’s windy. A windbreak awning with side guides or a zip screen stops the wind without taking away the light, and makes the pergola usable on far more days of the year.
At the visit we look at where the wind comes from at your home and what the facade and floor are like, and choose the anchoring and stainless fixings to match. If you already have a pergola that moves or rattles in the gusts, we’ll check that too, even if another company installed it.
Can I put a pergola on a penthouse or in a community of owners?
Yes, and it’s one of the places where we install the most pergolas. But in an apartment building there are two things to check before fitting anything: what the community of owners says and what the town hall requires.
A penthouse terrace is usually for the owner’s private use, but the facade and the look of the building are common elements. That’s why many communities ask for prior approval or set a model and colour so every home matches. We explain it in our guide to awnings and pergolas in communities of owners. On top of that, a pergola is a fixed structure, and depending on the municipality and its size it may be processed as minor works, with a licence or with a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall).
On the technical side, anchoring needs a lot of care on a penthouse: you can’t drill into a waterproofed roof lightly, and the wind usually blows harder than at street level. That’s why in each case we work out how to fix the structure without damaging the waterproofing and with the strength that height demands.
You don’t have to sort it out on your own: we check which procedure applies to you and, if needed, we handle the paperwork for you. There are more details in do I need permission to install an awning or a pergola?
Can I add a motor, lighting or side enclosures to a pergola later on?
In most cases, yes, but it’s worth thinking about from the start. Lots of families begin with a simple pergola and, the following year, want to close in one side or add lighting for summer dinners. If we know beforehand, we leave the structure ready and the upgrade is much simpler and neater.
Motor. Sliding canopy pergolas and bioclimatic pergolas can be motorised. We work with Cherubini motors, with remote control and, depending on the model, wind and rain sensors. We explain it all in motorised awnings and pergolas.
Lighting. Depending on the model, the structure can take LED strips built into the profiles or the louvres. If it wasn’t planned, outdoor lighting can be added, although it looks better when the wiring runs inside from the start.
Side enclosures. Zip screens, vertical awnings, windbreaks or glass turn the pergola into a room you can use in winter too. You’ll find all the options in terrace and porch enclosures and roller and vertical awnings.
If your pergola was installed by another company, we can also look at how to extend it: our after-sales service looks after installations by other installers. First we check the condition of the structure and the anchoring, and then we tell you honestly what can be added and what isn’t worth it.
