Awnings in Torre del Mar made for the promenade
Looking for awnings in Torre del Mar isn’t the same as looking for them inland. Here most terraces get a sea breeze every day, sun from first thing in the morning and gusts of levante (easterly) or poniente (westerly) wind that arrive without warning. We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga and we know exactly how a fabric awning behaves on the seafront: what wears out first, which fixings take the strain and which system pays off in the long run.
Along both the eastern (levante) and western (poniente) stretches of the promenade, there are plenty of flats and penthouses with terraces open to the sea, where an awning has to give shade without turning into a sail. In the town centre and along Avenida de Andalucia, apartment block balconies and shops are the norm. And out towards Almayate and around the lighthouse there are more houses with a patio or garden, where a pergola in Torre del Mar often wins out over an awning.
We install with our own team, using Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, Cherubini motors and stainless fixings. Before recommending anything, we come out, measure up and look at your facade free of charge.

Eastern promenade. Flats and penthouses facing the beach, with the wind head-on. Here a cassette awning with a wind sensor is the most sensible choice.
Western promenade. Residential blocks and bar terraces right on the promenade. To close off the sides without losing the view, windbreaks with side guides.
Town centre. Apartment blocks with balconies and shops on the ground floor. A drop arm awning works well on windows, and shopfront awnings for businesses.
Lighthouse area. Homes open to the sea and fairly exposed. On the biggest terraces, a bioclimatic pergola holds up better than fabric.
Avenida de Andalucia. A main road lined with apartment blocks and shops. Facades where the community often asks for matching awnings for everyone.
Towards Almayate. Houses with patios, terraced houses and a bit more space. Here people ask for wall-mounted pergolas and retractable awnings with a generous projection.
Breeze, salt air and gusts: what an awning has to cope with here
In Torre del Mar almost everything happens a few steps from the sand. These three factors decide which awning we recommend and how we anchor it.
Levante and poniente on the promenade
The buildings on the promenade take the wind with nothing to slow it down. Depending on which way your terrace faces, you’ll feel the levante or the poniente more, and gusts can lift an extended awning in seconds.
What we recommend: a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor, well-tensioned arms and fixings worked out for your facade.
Constant salt air
Salty humidity settles on the profiles, the screws and the fabric itself. Something that lasts for years inland will rust or stain much sooner on the seafront if it isn’t built for it.
What we recommend: powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings and a cassette awning that stores the fabric away when you’re not using it.
Morning sun and glare off the sea
South-facing terraces get direct sunlight plus the glare reflected off the water and the sand. You can feel the heat even in the shade if the fabric is dark or too thin.
What we recommend: light-coloured acrylic fabrics, or screen fabric for vertical enclosures, depending on the model.

Town hall, community and terraces in Torre del Mar
Torre del Mar comes under Velez-Malaga for administrative purposes. These are the three situations we come across most often before installing.
Velez-Malaga Town Hall
Licences and notifications for Torre del Mar are handled by Velez-Malaga Town Hall. A retractable awning is usually straightforward; for a fixed pergola, a minor works licence or a “declaración responsable” (a sworn statement to the town hall) may be required, depending on the by-laws and the case.
Blocks on the promenade and in the town centre
In an apartment block, the facade belongs to all the owners and the owners’ meeting can decide on a single design and colour. We go over it in our guide to awnings in communities of owners.
Bar and restaurant terraces
When the tables take up pavement or promenade space, the awning has to be compatible with the business’s terrace permit. We check it with you before we make anything.
We help you with the paperwork
If your awning or pergola needs any paperwork, we explain what it is and prepare the documents. There’s more in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Frequently asked questions about awnings in Torre del Mar
Which awning is best for a seafront penthouse in Torre del Mar?
On a penthouse on the promenade, an awning works in the toughest conditions there are: direct sun for hours, glare off the water, constant salty breeze and gusts with no building in front to break them. That’s why, of all the awnings in Torre del Mar, the one we recommend most for the seafront is the cassette awning, which tucks the fabric and arms away in an aluminium case when it closes.
That case makes all the difference on the coast. The fabric isn’t left exposed to the night-time damp or the sand the wind kicks up, and the mechanisms get far less dirty. If the terrace is large, we pair the cassette with long arms that take the shade right back to the wall, not just halfway across the floor.
The second almost essential element is the motor. With a Cherubini motor and a wind sensor, the awning retracts by itself when it detects gusts, even if you’re at the beach or out. More details in awning motorisation. For the afternoon, when the sun comes in low, a zip screen across the front completes the protection without completely blocking the view.
At the visit we look at how the front of the penthouse is built, where it can be safely anchored and whether the community has any colour requirements. Then we send you a written quote with a fixed price, often in under 24 hours.
How do the levante and poniente winds affect an awning on the Torre del Mar promenade?
In Torre del Mar both prevailing winds are very noticeable along the beachfront. Depending on which way your terrace faces, the wind will hit it side-on or almost head-on, and it’s not unusual for a calm day to change in no time. An extended fabric awning acts like a sail: if it isn’t retracted in time, the force is passed on to the arms and the wall fixings.
The first step is being able to retract it without having to keep an eye on it. A motor with a wind sensor does that for you, and it’s what we recommend most on both the eastern and western promenades. The second is choosing the right system: on large terraces, a cassette awning or a monobloc awning copes better with daily use than a basic model.
If you want to stay sitting outside when the wind blows, the answer isn’t overhead but at the sides. A windbreak awning with side guides or a zip screen closes off the side where the wind comes in, and they’re guided from top to bottom, so they don’t bang about or come loose.
The wall fixing counts as much as the awning itself. Before drilling, we check whether the wall is load-bearing, hollow brick or a slab edge, and we install with stainless fixings, which don’t pit in the salt. However good the system, in strong gusts the fabric needs to be retracted, and we’ll explain that to you at the visit.
Who grants permission for an awning in Torre del Mar if it belongs to Velez-Malaga?
Torre del Mar isn’t a separate municipality: it’s part of the municipal area of Velez-Malaga. So any licence, “declaración responsable” or notification for an awning or a pergola is submitted to Velez-Malaga Town Hall, under its by-laws. Many people don’t know this and waste time asking in the wrong place, so it’s worth being clear about it from the start.
Generally speaking, something that retracts against the facade, like an awning, involves less paperwork than a fixed structure. A pergola anchored to the ground or the facade may need a minor works licence or a “declaración responsable”, depending on its size and location. Anything facing a public street, such as a facade on the promenade, tends to be more tightly regulated than an inner courtyard.
If you live in an apartment block, as well as the town hall there’s the community of owners, which can set the model and colour for the whole facade. And if it’s a business with tables in the street, the awning has to respect what the business’s terrace licence allows. There’s a fuller explanation in do I need permission to install an awning or a pergola?
You don’t need to work it out on your own or battle with forms. At the visit we check where the installation will go, tell you which procedure applies and, when needed, handle the paperwork. If you’d like to know how we work before calling us, take a look at about us.
Do you install awnings for bars and restaurants on the Torre del Mar promenade?
Yes, and it’s one of the most common jobs in the area. The Torre del Mar promenade is packed with bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours with terraces, and each one has its own challenge: a large area to cover, customers who sit down at the sunniest time of day and a wind that can empty a terrace in moments if there are no side screens to stop it.
Depending on the facade and the space, we usually combine a large awning across the front with windbreaks with side guides on the sides. Where the wall isn’t enough to support a long projection, an awning with support legs rests on the ground for extra stability. On terraces used almost all year round, a pergola can also be a good fit.
In hospitality the fabric has to be tough, easy to clean and keep its colour despite a whole season of sun. We use Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, and certain ranges allow the business’s name or logo to be printed on the valance, depending on the model. With a Cherubini motor, opening and closing every day takes just the press of a switch.
We schedule the installation outside service hours so we don’t interrupt your business, and we check the terrace permit with you before we make anything, so the installation doesn’t cause you problems with the town hall. Everything you need to know is in awnings for businesses and hospitality.
My community in Torre del Mar wants matching awnings across the whole facade: how does it work?
It’s a very common request in the blocks in the town centre, on Avenida de Andalucia and along the promenade. When every owner puts up a different awning, the facade looks messy and disputes start. The usual approach is for the community to agree on a model, a fabric colour and a frame colour, and for each owner to install it whenever they like within those rules. That way nobody has to replace their awning overnight, and the facade gradually becomes uniform.
We can help right from the start. We visit the building, look at the different types of balcony and window, and prepare a proposal with the system that best suits each opening: a drop arm awning for windows, a roller awning for railings or a retractable awning for wider terraces, always with the same fabric so the whole facade looks consistent.
That proposal is presented at the owners’ meeting for approval. From then on, each owner calls us and we install their awning with the agreed model, without them having to explain anything again. If anyone needs new fabric in the future, we use the same reference so it doesn’t look out of place.
We sum up the legal framework in our article on awnings and the Spanish Horizontal Property Act, and the specific solutions are on awnings for communities of owners. Book the visit: the measuring and the proposal are free for the community and for each owner.
How do I look after my awning fabric so the salt air in Torre del Mar doesn’t ruin it?
The sea breeze leaves a film of salt on the fabric and profiles which, with the night-time damp, traps dust and sand. Over time stains appear, the colour fades and some metal parts start to suffer. You can’t avoid it completely when you live on the seafront, but you can slow it down a lot with a few simple habits.
The most useful thing is to rinse the fabric with fresh water every so often, without high pressure, and let it dry fully extended before retracting it. Never leave an awning rolled up wet for days: it’s the quickest way to get mildew stains. You’ll find all the cleaning tips in our guide how to clean and look after an awning.
The original choice matters too. A cassette awning protects the fabric when you’re not using it, powder-coated aluminium resists better than other finishes and stainless fixings prevent the rust you see on so many older awnings along the promenade. Sauleda and Dickson acrylic fabrics are designed for outdoor use and are easy to clean.
If your fabric is already badly worn, you don’t always need a new awning. In many cases, new made-to-measure fabric on your existing frame is enough, even if another company installed it. Find out more on our awning repairs and fabric replacement page.
Can I enclose the terrace of my flat in Torre del Mar so I can use it in winter too?
Yes, and in Torre del Mar it makes a lot of sense. Outside the summer season, terraces on the promenade go unused for days on end because the wind or the damp makes them uncomfortable, even when the sun is out. Enclosing them lets you use them as a sitting room with a view for much of the year, whether for eating, working or simply reading in the sun without getting cold.
The most complete option is an aluminium and glass enclosure with sliding panels, which lets the light in, keeps the wind out and opens up completely in summer. If you’d prefer something lighter, a zip screen across the front creates a space sheltered from the sun and much of the wind, and rolls up when you want the terrace open.
On large terraces or penthouses, you can also combine a bioclimatic pergola with side enclosures. The adjustable louvres control the light and, when closed, keep the rain out, while the sides adapt to each season. It’s a more structural solution, designed for anyone who wants a proper outdoor living space.
Bear in mind that an enclosure changes the look of the facade. In an apartment block it usually needs the community’s agreement and, depending on the case, some paperwork with Velez-Malaga Town Hall. At the visit we explain what applies to your flat and, if needed, prepare the documents. The quote is in writing, with a fixed price.
Do you install pergolas on houses and terraced houses in Torre del Mar towards Almayate?
Yes. In the part of Torre del Mar that opens out towards Almayate and around the lighthouse area, there are more homes with a patio, porch or small garden. There the question isn’t just which awning to choose, but whether a fixed structure is worth it, giving lasting shade so you can eat outdoors without worrying about the wind.
The most popular choice for these houses is the wall-mounted pergola, which is fixed to the facade and covers the patio or terrace without filling the floor with posts. If you want to be able to open the roof to enjoy the sun in winter and close it when it rains, a bioclimatic pergola, with its rotating louvres, gives you the most flexibility.
If you’re after adjustable shade with less structure, a retractable roof pergola has a sliding canopy that gathers at one end. And if you like the warm look of wood but don’t want the maintenance, a wood-effect aluminium pergola is a good alternative.
At the visit we look at which way it faces, where the wind comes in and how to drain the rainwater. We also check whether the pergola needs any paperwork with the town hall, depending on its size. We give you a written quote with no obligation, and if you know the Velez area you can also see our page on awnings in Velez-Malaga.
