What is a retractable roof pergola and how does it work?
A retractable roof pergola in Malaga is the simplest way to give a large terrace adjustable shade. The aluminium frame is fixed: posts, beams and two side guides. Along those guides run the canopy bars, cross-bars with the fabric sewn onto them. Pull the canopy and the bars slide along, folding the fabric into neat pleats at one end; draw it out again and it covers the whole roof.
That’s why this system is also known as a pergola with a retractable canopy or a sliding terrace roof. It’s not the frame that moves, it’s the fabric. In summer you leave it out during the hottest hours; in winter you pull it back so the sun can warm the terrace. And if we motorise it, you do it all with a remote.
Compared with a retractable awning, a retractable pergola covers much larger areas and doesn’t rely on the facade alone, because the fabric is supported along its full length. Compared with a bioclimatic pergola, it’s a lighter solution and a more modest investment. It’s a very popular choice for gardens, large penthouse terraces and bar terraces.

A retractable roof pergola made to measure
The system is the same; what changes is where it goes, how the canopy moves and what goes with it. These are the setups we install most.

Wall-mounted
Fixed to the wall on one side and resting on posts on the other. It covers the terrace from the living room door, and the canopy folds back against the facade or away from it, whichever you prefer. More on our wall-mounted pergolas page.

With a Cherubini motor
For large areas or canopies you move every day, a motor with remote control is almost essential. With a wind sensor, the canopy retracts on its own when the wind gets up. See motorisation.

With side screens
Add a vertical awning or a zip screen between the posts to block the afternoon sun and the wind, and use your terrace on many more days of the year.
We work with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics in a wide range of colours, plain or striped, and the powder-coated aluminium frame is made in the colour you choose. If you run a bar or restaurant, take a look at our awnings for hospitality too. And if you want a roof that closes completely when it rains, compare it with the bioclimatic pergola.
Move the canopy and see how it would look
Choose wall-mounted or freestanding, the frame colour and the canopy colour, draw the canopy out or pull it back and add side screens. When you’re happy with it, ask for a quote with your design and we’ll fine-tune it at the visit.

Both have fabric over an aluminium frame. The difference is whether that fabric can be pulled back or not.
| Feature | Retractable canopy | Fixed canopy |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Runs along the guides and folds back at one end | Stays permanently tensioned over the frame |
| Winter sun | Pull it back and let all the sun in | Shade stays all year round |
| Strong wind | Pull it back and the frame is left clear | The fabric stays exposed; needs good tension and anchoring |
| Everyday use | Shade on demand, by hand or motorised | Nothing to move |
| Motorisation | Possible, with a Cherubini motor | Not applicable |
| Fabric wear | Folded away, it’s better protected from sun and wind | Exposed all year, depending on the model |
| Best for | Terraces that want winter sun and summer shade | Areas that always need shade |
If you want permanent shade without fabric, an aluminium pergola with fixed slats is another good option. And if your terrace is small and an awning will do, have a look at the cassette awning or the retractable awning. You’ll find every system on our pergolas in Malaga page.
Retractable roof pergola prices: what affects the cost
Every pergola is made for a specific spot, so a generic figure would only mislead you. This is what drives the quote for a retractable roof pergola:

Frequently asked questions about retractable roof pergolas in Malaga
What’s the difference between a fixed canopy and a retractable one?
Both have an aluminium frame with guides and fabric on top. The difference is what the fabric does. With a retractable canopy, the fabric is sewn onto cross-bars that slide along the guides, so you can draw it out for shade or fold it back at one end to open up the sky. With a fixed canopy, the fabric stays permanently tensioned over the frame.
Choosing between a fixed or retractable canopy comes down to how you’ll use the terrace. If you want shade in summer and sun in winter, a retractable one gives you both. If the area needs shade all year round, such as a parking space, a covered walkway or a corner that takes the full afternoon sun, a fixed one means there’s nothing to move.
There’s another practical difference: the wind. With a retractable canopy, when strong levante (easterly) or poniente (westerly) gusts are forecast, you pull the fabric back and the frame is left clear. With a fixed one, the fabric stays exposed, so the tension and anchoring have to be spot on. And fabric that spends part of the year folded away usually suffers less wear.
For most home terraces we recommend a retractable canopy, because it’s more versatile. If you want fixed shade without fabric, compare it with the aluminium pergola with fixed slats. And if you’re not sure, book a free visit using the form.
Can a retractable roof pergola cope with the levante wind?
The frame can, as long as it’s properly sized and anchored. The fabric, like any textile, moves with the wind, so the advice is clear: when it’s blowing hard, pull it back. That’s precisely one of the advantages of a retractable canopy over a fixed one: with the fabric folded away, the pergola offers very little resistance to the wind.
A retractable roof pergola is more stable than a retractable awning of the same size, because the fabric is held along both sides by the guides and supported along its full length, rather than hanging from the facade alone. Even so, in areas exposed to the levante, such as the Axarquia coastline, or to the poniente on the Costa del Sol, we size the posts, guides and anchors with a margin to spare depending on how exposed the terrace is.
If you don’t want to keep an eye on the forecast, the answer is to motorise it with a Cherubini motor and a wind sensor: when gusts go over the set threshold, the canopy retracts on its own, even when you’re not at home. We explain it on our awning motorisation page and in our article on awning motors.
If your terrace gets a lot of wind from the side, a windbreak awning between the posts shelters the seating area without taking away the light. At the visit we assess how exposed it is and suggest what your terrace really needs.
Can the sliding canopy on a pergola be motorised?
Yes, and on large pergolas it’s what we almost always recommend. A sliding pergola canopy can be operated by hand, by pulling the fabric, but when the area is large or you move it every day, a motor makes all the difference, both for convenience and for the fabric itself, which always folds the same way without being yanked.
We work with Cherubini motors with remote control. Depending on the model, you can add wind sensors, which retract the canopy when it’s blowing hard, and sun sensors, which draw it out when the sun gets strong. You’ll find all the details on our awning and pergola motorisation page.
If you already have a manual retractable roof pergola, in many cases it can be motorised later. We need to check the frame, the guides and the drive system, and make sure there’s a power point nearby or that one can be run to it. We assess it at the visit, even if another company installed the pergola, and tell you honestly whether it’s worth motorising or whether some parts should be replaced first.
As for the wiring, ideally it should be planned from the start so the cables can be hidden inside the frame. If you’d like to understand how an awning motor works and what types there are, we cover it in our article on awning motors.
How long does the fabric on a retractable roof pergola last, and when should it be replaced?
It depends on the quality of the fabric, how much sun it gets, the salt air and how it’s used. There’s no fixed lifespan, and be wary of anyone who quotes an exact figure without seeing where the pergola is. What is certain is that good fabric, well looked after, lasts far longer than a cheaper one left exposed all year.
That’s why we work with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, made by manufacturers whose outdoor textiles stand up well to the sun and keep their colour. The fabric warranty is the one the manufacturer gives for that product, and we set it out in the quote. One advantage of a retractable canopy is that you can fold the fabric away when you don’t need it, in winter or when it’s windy, so it wears less.
You’ll know it’s time to replace it when it has lost a lot of colour, the fabric has gone stiff, the seams start to split or it no longer repels water as it used to. To make it last longer, clean it now and again without harsh products; we explain how in how to clean and look after an awning.
When the time comes, there’s no need to replace the pergola: we just replace the fabric and check the guides and canopy bars. We also do this on pergolas fitted by other installers. Find out more on our awning repairs and new fabric page.
Does a retractable terrace roof keep the rain off?
Partly. A retractable terrace roof with a pleated canopy protects against light rain, especially if the fabric is suitable and the pergola has the right pitch so water runs off to one side. In a short shower you can stay underneath without any problem.
In heavy rain or a prolonged downpour it’s a different story. Water collects on the fabric if there isn’t enough pitch, adding weight and putting strain on the canopy system. So, just as with wind, the advice is to pull the canopy back when it’s pouring. On the Malaga coast it doesn’t rain on many days, but when it does it often comes all at once, so it’s worth bearing in mind.
If you want to use the terrace on rainy days too, the most effective solution is a bioclimatic pergola, whose louvred roof closes and channels water into a hidden gutter. To close off the sides and gain an extra room, have a look at our aluminium and glass enclosures.
At the visit we’ll ask how you plan to use the terrace in autumn and winter. If a retractable canopy is the right fit, we adjust the pitch and the type of fabric; if not, we’ll tell you honestly and suggest the alternative that really meets your needs.
Is a retractable roof pergola or a retractable awning better for my terrace?
It mainly depends on the size of the area you want to cover and how much wind it gets. For medium-sized terraces right next to the facade, a retractable awning is usually enough and simpler: it’s fixed to the wall, extends on its folding arms and retracts completely, with no posts on the ground.
A retractable roof pergola makes sense when the area is large, when you need more projection than an awning’s arms can give, or when you want to cover an area that isn’t next to any wall, such as a garden or pool area. Because the fabric is supported on guides along the whole frame, it’s more stable than an awning of the same size.
Another difference is the look and the sense of space. A pergola defines a living area, with its posts and roof, like an outdoor room; a retracted awning almost disappears against the facade. And a pergola takes side screens more easily.
When it comes to permits, a pergola is a fixed structure and may need some paperwork depending on the municipality; an awning is usually simpler. We explain it in permits for awnings and pergolas. At the visit we show you both options with your measurements and give you a fixed-price quote.
Which side should the canopy fold back to?
It’s one of those decisions that seems minor but you notice every day. The canopy on a retractable roof pergola folds up at one end of the frame, and that bundle of folded fabric is visible. Choosing the right side depends on three things: the view, the sun and the wind.
On wall-mounted pergolas, the canopy most often folds back against the facade. That way, when it’s pulled back, the front is left clear and the view from the living room isn’t interrupted. But if the terrace looks out over the sea or the countryside, we sometimes prefer the opposite: folding it outwards so the bundle doesn’t sit right above the door.
The sun matters too. If you want partial shade, say only over the half nearest the house at midday, you can draw the canopy out just as far as you need, especially with a motor. And the wind: in exposed spots it’s best for the bundle to sit on the most sheltered side, so it doesn’t take the gusts head-on.
We’ll weigh it up with you at the visit, with the terrace in front of us. If you’d like a head start, send us a photo using the form and we’ll give you our recommendation. And if your terrace is part of a building, check what your community of owners says too in awnings in communities of owners.
Is a retractable roof pergola a good option for a bar or restaurant terrace?
Yes, and it’s one of the solutions we install most for bars and restaurants. A bar terrace needs to cover lots of tables with few posts, provide shade at peak times and be retractable when the weather changes. A retractable canopy does all three, and with a motor your staff can operate it with a remote in seconds.
On the promenades of Torre del Mar, Nerja, Fuengirola or Marbella, the challenge is the wind and the salt air. That’s why we use powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings, and recommend a wind sensor that retracts the canopy on its own when it’s blowing hard, so you don’t depend on someone remembering in the middle of the lunchtime rush. And you can choose a fabric colour from the Sauleda and Dickson ranges to match your venue’s look.
To extend the season, you can add windbreak awnings with side guides on the sides, with clear fabric so the venue can still be seen from outside. You’ll find more solutions designed for businesses on our awnings for businesses and hospitality page.
In hospitality, the use of public space and each town hall’s terrace bylaws may also require paperwork or specific models. We check this before installing and, when needed, we handle the documents. That way you start the season with your retractable roof pergola in Malaga already installed and no nasty surprises.
