Awnings in Torrox for two very different landscapes
Torrox is really two worlds. Up the hill is the village, with steep streets, whitewashed houses and terraces looking out over the valley or the sea. Down below are Torrox Costa and El Morche, with apartment blocks, plenty of beach life and a large community of foreign residents who live here all year or spend long seasons here. That’s why there’s no single model of awnings in Torrox: it depends on where your home is.
On the coast, most terraces belong to apartments and need generous shade and materials built to cope with the salty breeze. In the village and in Calaceite, what matters more is the slope, the afternoon sun and the look of the facade. And in houses with more space, a pergola in Torrox turns the terrace into an extra open-air room.
We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga. We make every awning to measure and fit it ourselves, with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, Cherubini motorisation and stainless fixings. Measuring and the quote cost you nothing.

Torrox Pueblo. Whitewashed houses on steep streets and terraces looking over the valley. A roller awning works well on balconies, and a wall-mounted pergola on roof terraces.
Torrox Costa. Apartment blocks along the promenade, many owned by foreign residents. The most popular choice here is a motorised cassette awning.
El Morche. A coastal area with apartments and low-rise houses near the beach. To close off the sides when it’s windy, a zip screen is very practical.
El Peñoncillo. Homes right by the sea with exposed terraces. We recommend a motor with a wind sensor and stainless materials.
Calaceite. Hillside houses with land and open views. A great spot for a bioclimatic pergola or an aluminium one on the main terrace.
Hillside, beach and afternoon sun: what shapes your awning
Between the village and the coast, the wind, the humidity and the style of the facades all change. This is what we check before recommending anything in Torrox.
Plenty of sunshine
Torrox enjoys a lot of sunshine every year, and south- or west-facing terraces heat up fast. In summer, without shade, they’re hard to use at midday and in the afternoon.
What we recommend: light-coloured acrylic fabrics, arms with a good projection and, on large windows, a zip screen with screen fabric, depending on the model.
Wind along the coast
In Torrox Costa, El Morche and El Peñoncillo, terraces take the sea breeze head-on. Gusts of levante (easterly) or poniente (westerly) wind can punish an awning that’s left open.
What we recommend: a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor and fixings planned around each building’s facade.
Sloping ground
In the village and in Calaceite, many houses sit on a slope, with terraces on different levels, uneven walls and narrow access that all affect the installation.
What we recommend: careful measuring on every level, posts adapted to the height of each terrace and a wall-mounted pergola when the ground can’t take supports.

Town hall, communities and hillsides: paperwork in Torrox
Before we manufacture anything, we check which procedure applies to your installation. These are the most common cases in Torrox.
Torrox Town Hall
Permits for every part of the municipality, from Torrox Pueblo to El Morche, are handled by Torrox Town Hall. For an awning that retracts, the paperwork is usually light; a fixed pergola, depending on its size and fixings, may need a declaración responsable (a sworn statement to the town hall) or a minor works licence.
Apartment blocks in Torrox Costa
In apartment blocks the facade belongs to everyone, and the owners’ meeting can choose a single design and colour. We sum it up in awnings in communities of owners.
Plots outside the town
For detached homes on the hillside or in the countryside, fixed structures may face more restrictions. We check this with you before suggesting a pergola.
We prepare the paperwork you need
When an installation needs a permit, we explain what kind and prepare the documents ourselves. More information in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

What people ask us most about awnings in Torrox
Which awning is best for an apartment in Torrox Costa?
Most apartments in Torrox Costa have a medium-sized terrace, facing south or out to sea, that gets sun for many hours in summer. What works best there is a folding-arm awning that gives generous shade and retracts fully when you want the sun or when the wind picks up. Of all the awnings in Torrox we’re asked for on the coast, this is by far the most common case.
If the terrace looks straight onto the promenade or is on an upper floor, we recommend a cassette awning: when it closes, the fabric and arms are sealed inside the case, safe from salt air and sand. On more sheltered terraces, a retractable awning without a cassette also works really well.
Buildings on the coast nearly always have a community of owners, and there’s often an agreed fabric colour or model for the whole facade. If you’re not sure, we help you check before we manufacture, so your awning matches the rest of the facade and you don’t run into problems later.
We finish it off with Sauleda or Dickson fabrics, powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings and, if you like, a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor. The visit and measuring are free, and we send you a written quote with a fixed price, often in under 24 hours.
I spend part of the year away from Torrox: which awning suits me and how do I organise the installation?
It’s a very common situation in Torrox, especially in Torrox Costa, where many owners spend part of the year in another country or city and the home stays shut up for months. An awning for a home that’s often empty has to meet two conditions: look after itself and not deteriorate while nobody’s using it.
The first is motorisation with a wind sensor. With a Cherubini motor, if someone leaves the awning open or the wind gets up, it retracts automatically. The second is keeping the fabric protected: a cassette awning stores it in its case, and powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings stand up better to months of humidity with no maintenance.
To organise it, the easiest way is to start on WhatsApp: you send us photos and rough measurements, we give you some initial advice and arrange the visit for when you’re in Torrox. After measuring, you get a written quote, fully itemised with a fixed price, so you can look it over at your leisure wherever you are.
If you accept, we agree the installation date with you and confirm it in writing, so you can fit it around your stay and be there on the day, or at least on the day we show you how everything works. And when you come back after time away, if anything isn’t working as it should, you have our after-sales service. You can find out more about how we work in about us.
Do I need permission from Torrox Town Hall to put up a pergola?
In most cases a fixed pergola does involve some paperwork, although the type depends on its size, how it’s anchored and where it goes. A declaración responsable (a sworn statement to the town hall) may be enough, or you may need a minor works licence from Torrox Town Hall, which is responsible for every part of the municipality: the village, Torrox Costa, El Morche, El Peñoncillo and Calaceite.
A retractable awning is usually treated more simply, because it isn’t a permanent structure. Even so, if it goes on a facade visible from the street or on a building with a community of owners, it has to comply with the local by-laws and the community’s rules. In the blocks of Torrox Costa, the owners’ meeting has often approved a common design.
For detached homes on the hillside or plots outside the town, fixed structures may be more restricted. That’s why, before designing a pergola for a house in Calaceite or in the countryside, we check with you how much leeway the regulations give, so we don’t build something that causes problems later or has to be taken down.
You don’t have to do all that research on your own. At the visit we look at your situation and, when needed, take care of the paperwork. There’s more information in our article do I need permission to install an awning or a pergola? and on our pergolas page.
Which pergola suits a hillside house in Torrox Pueblo or Calaceite?
Houses on a slope have obvious advantages, like the views, but they make installation trickier: terraces on different levels, floors that aren’t level, old walls and narrow access. Before talking about models, at the visit we measure every level and see where posts can go and where it’s better to anchor to the wall. We also check how the materials can be carried up, because in some streets of the old town you can’t get a vehicle to the door.
When the ground can’t take supports or the terrace is narrow, a wall-mounted pergola is the neatest solution: it’s fixed to the facade and only needs posts at the outer edge. If there’s room and you want to use the terrace in autumn and spring too, a bioclimatic pergola with adjustable louvres controls sun and ventilation and keeps the rain off.
In village houses, looks matter. Powder-coated aluminium in white or a wood effect blends in well with whitewashed facades, and a wooden pergola brings warmth to patios and roof terraces. To adjust the shade without a louvred structure, a retractable roof pergola, with its canopy that slides open and folds away, is another option.
We take into account rainwater drainage, the wind direction and which way the terrace faces, so the shade falls where you actually spend your time. We explain everything with the written quote, with no obligation and a fixed price.
How do I protect my terrace from the wind in El Morche or El Peñoncillo?
In Torrox’s coastal areas, like El Morche and El Peñoncillo, many terraces are practically on the beach and take the sea breeze with nothing in front of them. A pleasant day can turn uncomfortable very quickly when the levante or poniente blows in, and an open awning in those conditions takes a real beating, from the fabric to the arms and the screws holding it to the wall.
For the overhead awning, the most important thing is being able to retract it in time. That’s the job of a wind sensor connected to the Cherubini motor. Add to that fixings suited to your facade and stainless screws that won’t weaken in the salt air. A storm with the fabric extended is a bad idea with any model, and we’ll tell you so straight.
If what you want is to stay out on the terrace when it’s breezy, you need side screens. A zip screen holds the fabric by a zip inside its guides so it never slips out, and a windbreak awning with side guides covers the most exposed side without blocking the light.
For very exposed terraces, another option is an aluminium and glass enclosure, which keeps the wind out all year and opens up in summer. At the visit we assess which suits your terrace and what your community allows.
Can you motorise the manual awning I already have in Torrox?
In many cases, yes. Many of the crank-operated awnings we see in Torrox can be adapted to run on a motor without changing the frame, as long as the roller tube and arms are in good condition and the system allows it, depending on the model. It’s especially worthwhile for large awnings, which are hard work to open and close by hand every day.
We install Cherubini motors, which fit inside the awning’s roller tube and are operated by remote control or a wall switch. From there you can add automation: the wind sensor retracts the awning in gusts, and the sun sensor can extend it when the sun gets strong. We go into all of this in awning motorisation.
To fit the motor you need a power socket near the awning. If you don’t have one, we look at it during the visit and explain the options for running power there neatly and safely. We also check the condition of the fabric: if it’s very worn, it may be a good time to replace it at the same time and leave the awning as good as new in one go.
It doesn’t matter who installed your awning; we’ll still check it over. We give you a written quote with a fixed price, and if you’d like to know more about choosing a motor, have a look at our guide to awning motors.
Do you repair wind-damaged awnings in Torrox and Calaceite?
Yes. After a spell of strong wind we often get calls from Torrox about a bent arm, torn fabric, a bracket that has moved or an awning that no longer retracts properly. The first thing is to stop using it if it’s hanging loose or twisted, because the damage could get worse or it could fall. If you can, take a few photos and send them to us: they help us know which parts to bring on the first visit.
At the visit we check the whole thing: arms, springs, roller tube, brackets, fixings and the motor, if there is one. Very often the repair means replacing a specific part or the fabric, and the awning works perfectly again. For the fabric we work with Sauleda and Dickson and make it to measure for your frame.
We’ll also tell you whether the fixings were done properly or need reinforcing, and whether it’s worth adding a wind sensor so it doesn’t happen again. If the frame is badly damaged and isn’t worth repairing, we’ll tell you clearly and suggest alternatives.
We look after awnings installed by other companies, even ones that no longer exist. Before we touch anything, you get a written quote with a fixed price. You’ll find all the information in awning repairs and fabric replacement, and if your second home is further along the coast, we also work in Nerja.
Do you also fit fly screens and enclosures in Torrox?
Yes. In Torrox, as well as awnings and pergolas, we install made-to-measure fly screens and aluminium and glass enclosures for terraces and porches. They’re often requested together: the awning for summer shade, the fly screen so you can sleep with the window open and the enclosure so you can use the terrace in winter.
We make fly screens to fit each opening. For windows, a roller screen is the most practical; for terrace doors, a pleated or sliding screen lets you walk through without removing it. In the apartments of Torrox Costa and the village houses with a vegetable plot or garden nearby, they’re almost essential in the hot months, when you want to sleep with the windows open and enjoy the night breeze. You’ll find every type in made-to-measure fly screens.
An enclosure turns an open terrace into a space you can use all year without losing light. We make them with powder-coated aluminium profiles and glass, adapted to each terrace or porch. If the building has a community of owners or the town hall asks for any paperwork, we tell you and handle the procedure. More details in terrace enclosures.
If you’d like to sort it all out in one go, tell us when you book: we measure all the openings and the terrace and send you a single written quote, with no obligation and a fixed price.
