Awnings in Algarrobo for the village, the coast and the countryside

Algarrobo is a small municipality with two very different faces. Inland is the village, with homes looking for shade on balconies, patios and roof terraces. By the sea are Algarrobo Costa and Mezquitilla, with apartment blocks and terraces facing the Mediterranean. Installing awnings in Algarrobo means first working out which of the two your home is in.

On the coast, wind and salt call the shots, and what works best are awnings that retract on their own and stand up to humidity. In the village and at the country houses around it, the problem is the inland heat: there, a pergola in Algarrobo for the porch or the pool, or fly screens so you can sleep with the windows open, transform the summer.

QUBRE works from Velez-Malaga with its own technical team, Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, Cherubini motors, powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings. We measure up free of charge and give you a written quote, with no obligation and a fixed price.

The climate in Algarrobo

Hot inland, windy on the coast: two climates in one municipality

The village and the coast share a municipality but not a climate. This is how what’s worth installing changes depending on where your home is in Algarrobo.

More heat inland

In the village and at the country houses, the sea breeze reaches less and the hot summer terral wind really makes itself felt. Patios and porches build up heat all day long.

What we recommend: pergolas with good ventilation and light-coloured fabrics that don’t trap the heat.

Levante and poniente on the coast

In Algarrobo Costa and Mezquitilla, gusts of the levante (easterly) and poniente (westerly) winds come straight in off the sea and can lift an extended awning in a matter of seconds.

What we recommend: a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor and fixings to suit the wall.

Salt and empty apartments

If the apartment is shut up for long periods, the salty humidity keeps working on roller tubes, arms and screws even when nobody’s using the terrace.

What we recommend: a cassette awning, powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings.

Permits in Algarrobo

Paperwork for awnings and pergolas in Algarrobo

We check it before we manufacture anything. These are the three situations that come up most often in the municipality.

Algarrobo Town Hall

Fitting a retractable awning on your home usually involves little paperwork. When it comes to fixed pergolas or enclosures, the by-laws may require a minor works licence or a declaración responsable (a sworn statement to the town hall), depending on the specific case.

Apartment blocks

In the blocks of Algarrobo Costa and Mezquitilla the facade belongs to all the owners, so the owners’ meeting can require the same awning for every home. Have a look at our guide to awnings in communities.

Houses on rural land

At the country houses around the municipality, putting up a permanent structure on rural land is more restricted. Before designing a pergola, we check with you what’s feasible.

We take care of the paperwork

If your installation needs it, we tell you which procedure applies and prepare the documents. Read also do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Common questions about awnings in Algarrobo

How much do awnings cost in Algarrobo?

We don’t work with catalogue prices because every installation is different: shading a balcony in the village doesn’t cost the same as a ten-metre terrace in Algarrobo Costa. What you will get, once we’ve measured up, is a written quote with a fixed price and no obligation for your awnings in Algarrobo, with everything it includes itemised.

The price is made up of several elements: the system (an open retractable awning, a cassette that protects the fabric or a vertical roller awning), the size, the fabric you choose from Sauleda and Dickson, manual operation or a Cherubini motor, and accessories such as wind or sun sensors, depending on the model.

Then there are site conditions we can only see in person: the type of wall, whether we need to anchor to the edge of a floor slab, how high up the flat is or access to a country house along a track. On the coast we also assess exposure to the wind, because it determines the fixings and the system we’ll recommend.

The visit is free and we often send the quote in under 24 hours. If what you have is an old awning with torn fabric, consider new fabric first: if the frame is sound, it can work out a lot cheaper than a new awning.

Which awning suits an apartment in Algarrobo Costa that I don’t use all year?

If your apartment on the coast is used for holidays or weekends and is shut up the rest of the time, the awning has to be able to look after itself, because nobody will be there to retract it when the weather changes. That’s the first thing we take into account for awnings in Algarrobo Costa and Mezquitilla, even before the colour or size.

We usually recommend a cassette awning: when it’s retracted, the fabric and arms are closed inside an aluminium case, protected from salt, dust and bird mess. With the terrace empty for weeks on end, that protection makes a real difference to how long the fabric lasts and how clean it is when you arrive. A closed cassette also gives the facade a tidier look.

The second key element is motorisation with a wind sensor. The Cherubini motor retracts the awning when it detects gusts, even with nobody at home, and with a sun sensor it can open and close according to the light, depending on the model. That way you won’t come back to find your awning damaged.

Finally, we install with powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings, designed for salty humidity. If the building’s community has set a model or colour for the facade, we stick to it. At the visit we check everything and give you a fixed, written quote with no obligation.

What shade should I put on a balcony or roof terrace in Algarrobo Pueblo?

Homes in the village are nothing like those on the coast: facades onto the street, shallow balconies and, in quite a few houses, a patio or roof terrace where life happens in summer. Each of these spaces needs a different solution, and the rule is not to take over the street or make the house darker than necessary.

For balconies, a drop arm awning is the most practical: its arms come down to rest in front of the railing and the shade stays within the balcony. If you’d also like a bit of privacy from the house opposite, a roller awning drops vertically over the railing.

On roof terraces and patios there are more options. A retractable roof pergola has a folding canopy you draw or pull back depending on the time of day, and a retractable awning fixed to the wall shades the table area with no posts. We choose based on the free space and the wall available. On roof terraces we also check how to anchor without damaging the roof’s waterproofing.

On street-facing facades it’s worth checking whether the town hall has any conditions on visible elements, and we check this for you before we manufacture. The visit and advice are free, and we bring Sauleda and Dickson sample books so you can choose the colour in the real light of your home.

Wooden or aluminium pergola for a country house in Algarrobo?

Both work, but they meet different priorities. At the country houses around Algarrobo people usually want generous shade by the porch, the barbecue or the pool, and the choice between wood and aluminium comes down mainly to the look you want and how much maintenance you’re willing to take on. Size counts too: to cover a large area with few posts, each material has its limits.

A wooden pergola blends in beautifully with rural architecture and brings warmth. On the other hand, wood is a living material: with sun and humidity it’s worth checking it and renewing the protective treatment from time to time so it doesn’t crack or fade over the summers.

A powder-coated aluminium pergola needs hardly any maintenance and comes in a wood-effect finish, which gets close to the rustic look without any varnishing. You can add a sliding canopy or fixed slats to either, and if you want to control sun and rain, the option is a bioclimatic pergola.

Before deciding, bear in mind that if the plot is classed as rural land, putting up a fixed structure is more restricted than in a town. At the visit we look at the plot, which way it faces and the wind, and help you check what’s feasible; if any paperwork is needed, we handle the documents. If you’d like to compare, we’ll quote for both options separately.

Do I need a licence in Algarrobo to install a pergola or an awning?

For a retractable awning on the facade of your home the procedure is usually simple, though not always non-existent: on facades facing the public street or in buildings with community rules, it needs checking. For fixed pergolas, enclosures and larger structures, Algarrobo Town Hall may require a minor works licence or a declaración responsable (a sworn statement to the town hall).

In the apartment blocks of Algarrobo Costa and Mezquitilla, the community of owners has a big say, because what can be seen from outside belongs to everyone and the owners’ meeting can set the model and the shade of the fabric. We take you through it step by step in our guide to awnings in communities of owners.

At the country houses around the municipality, the key is the land classification: on rural land, fixed constructions are more limited, and a pergola that would be straightforward on a townhouse on the coast may need more investigation. That’s why we prefer to check it with you before suggesting a specific structure. Sometimes a demountable solution or a large-projection awning sorts out the shade with fewer complications.

By-laws change over time, so we check your particular case at the visit and, if there’s paperwork to do, we take care of it. You’ll find more details in our article do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?, covering the most common situations in Malaga and Granada.

How does an awning cope with the levante in Mezquitilla and on the Algarrobo seafront?

On the seafront in Mezquitilla and Algarrobo Costa the wind comes in off the sea with nothing in the way, and the levante and poniente can go from a breeze to strong gusts in no time. An awning’s fabric works like a sail: in strong gusts it has to be retracted, so the strategy is to combine a good system with automatic retraction.

Retraction is handled by a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor, which closes the awning without you lifting a finger as soon as the wind picks up. For large terraces, a monobloc awning adds rigidity thanks to its support bar, and a cassette protects the fabric while it’s retracted.

The fixings are just as important: we check whether the wall is concrete or brick and choose the right fixing, always with stainless screws so the salt doesn’t weaken them. A well-chosen awning that’s badly anchored is a risk, which is why every bracket is fitted by our own team, the same people who took the measurements.

If you want to be able to sit outside when it’s blowing, vertical screens with guides, like a zip screen, keep the fabric held at the sides. When we come to measure, we look at where the wind reaches your terrace and recommend what’s genuinely needed, with no unnecessary extras.

Do you fit fly screens and enclosures in Algarrobo?

Yes, and they go really well with an awning. In Algarrobo we install made-to-measure fly screens for any opening in the house, and aluminium and glass enclosures for terraces and porches. Together they round off how you enjoy your home in both summer and winter.

Fly screens are especially useful in country houses and on ground floors, where more insects get in on summer nights. We make roller screens for windows, pleated ones for doors you use a lot and sliding ones for wide openings, always made to the exact size of the opening so there are no gaps for anything to sneak through. The frame colour is chosen to match your windows and doors.

An enclosure, for its part, turns a terrace or porch into a space you can use all year, sheltered from wind and rain without losing light. On the coast we use powder-coated aluminium profiles and stainless fixings, and adapt the opening system to the space and how you want to use it, depending on the model.

An enclosure changes the look of the facade, so it’s worth checking with your community and the town hall; we help you with that and handle the documents when needed. You can ask for all three at once: we take all the measurements on the same day and you get everything in a single fixed-price quote, with no obligation.

Can you motorise or repair the old awning on my house in Algarrobo?

Yes, and it’s often the most sensible option. If the awning’s frame is sound, there’s no need to replace the whole thing: new fabric, a replacement for a tired arm or an added motor can keep it giving shade for many more summers. We also do this for awnings fitted by other installers, even if they no longer work in the area.

For awning repairs and fabric replacement, we make the new fabric to measure for your awning with Sauleda and Dickson materials. You can keep the colour you had or completely change the look of the terrace with a new plain or stripe, after seeing the sample book. When the building has an agreed shade, we choose the closest fabric so your awning doesn’t stand out.

If you’re tired of the crank handle, motorisation with a Cherubini motor can be adapted to many existing awnings, depending on the model and the condition of the roller tube. With a remote control or wall switch you open and close it effortlessly, and with a wind sensor the awning retracts on its own when it blows hard.

The quickest way is to send us a few photos on WhatsApp so we can get an idea. Then we check it in person and give you a written quote with a fixed price. New materials come with a 2-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer and product, and the structure and installation have their own guarantee too.
