Awnings in Almuñécar for terraces that look out to sea
In Almuñécar almost every home has one thing in common: a terrace facing the Mediterranean. So anyone looking for awnings in Almuñécar usually wants the same thing: shade without losing the view, and a system that won’t suffer in the sea breeze. At QUBRE that’s our starting point, and we adapt every proposal to the height, orientation and exposure of your terrace.
The municipality has very different profiles. In the town centre and around Puerta del Mar there are plenty of flats and apartments with balconies; in Velilla-Taramay, beachfront apartment blocks; towards Cotobro and up the hillsides, terraced villas with terraces at different levels; and in La Herradura and Marina del Este, homes with gardens and flats by the marina. We also install pergolas in Almuñécar and terrace enclosures so you can use your terrace all year round.
We choose Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, Cherubini motors and powder-coated aluminium anchored with stainless fixings. After measuring up at no cost, we send you the proposal in writing with a fixed figure and no strings attached.

Covering the Costa Tropical
From Velez-Malaga we take the A-7 to every part of the municipality, La Herradura included.

Town centre. Flats with balconies and facades onto the street. A roller awning protects the railing and gives you privacy.
Puerta del Mar. Flats and terraces facing the promenade. A cassette awning stands up best to the sea air.
Velilla-Taramay. Beach apartment blocks with lots of identical terraces. Here the community has the final say: see awnings for communities.
Cotobro. Hillside homes with open views. A wall-mounted pergola creates fixed shade on the main terrace.
La Herradura. Houses with gardens and generous terraces. An enclosure turns the porch into an extra room.
Marina del Este. Flats by the marina, open to the sea. To block the wind from the side, we recommend a zip screen on the sides.
Hillside terraces, sea breeze and sunshine all year round
The mild climate of the Costa Tropical invites you to live outdoors, but the exposure of many terraces means choosing carefully. This is what we check.
South-facing terraces
Most homes look out to sea, which in Almuñécar lies to the south. That means direct sun for much of the day and terraces that get very hot in summer.
What we recommend: awnings with enough projection, technical or screen fabrics and, for anyone who uses the terrace every day, a bioclimatic pergola.
Gusts on the hillsides
Terraced houses on the hillsides and buildings by the beach have nothing in front of them, so the levante and poniente (the easterly and westerly winds) arrive unchecked.
What we recommend: a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor and vertical screens in guides, such as a zip screen.
Salty air
Near the promenade and the marina, salt settles on profiles and screws and ends up causing corrosion if the materials aren’t up to it.
What we recommend: powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings and a cassette awning that stores the fabric away.

For a flat in town
In town-centre flats, the challenge is to shade windows and balconies without encroaching on the street and while keeping to any rules the building has for its exterior.

Town hall, communities and plots in Almuñécar
We check which procedure applies before we make anything. These are the most common scenarios in the municipality, La Herradura included.
Almuñécar Town Hall
La Herradura belongs to the municipality of Almuñécar, so the same municipal regulations apply. Anything that retracts involves less red tape than a fixed structure, which may need a minor works licence or a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall).
Apartment blocks and urbanisations
In Velilla-Taramay, Puerta del Mar or Marina del Este, the community of owners can set the model and colour. We sum it up in our guide to awnings in communities.
Villas with a plot
On a plot, a fixed pergola may be subject to planning conditions, such as distances to boundaries or how much of the plot is built on. We go through it with you before designing it.
We help you with the paperwork
If your installation needs a permit, we’ll tell you at the visit and prepare the paperwork with you. Read more in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Frequently asked questions about awnings in Almuñécar
Which awning suits a hillside villa in Cotobro or other high parts of Almuñécar?
The terraced homes on Almuñécar’s hillsides have two big advantages, the views and the light, and one drawback: exposure. With no buildings in front, the terraces get direct sun for many hours and the wind comes straight in. So with a hillside villa, the first thing we assess is how exposed the terrace is and how much you use it.
If you want steady shade without worrying about the wind, a wall-mounted pergola fixed to the facade is the most hassle-free solution: a fixed aluminium structure with a roof that can be a sliding canopy or louvres. In its most complete version, a bioclimatic pergola lets you angle the louvres to let air and light through or close them when a shower comes over.
If you’d prefer an awning, a cassette system with a motor and wind sensor is the most sensible choice, because it retracts on its own when the wind blows hard. And to block wind from the side without losing the view, a zip screen with screen fabric lets you see out from inside.
On terraces at different levels we also work out how to get in to install and where there’s a solid wall to anchor to. At the free visit we see everything on site, check where the wind blows from on your plot and suggest one or two well-reasoned options, with a written quote and a fixed price.
How much do awnings in Almuñécar cost?
It’s the first question anyone asks an awning company in Almuñécar, and the honest answer is that it depends. Because every installation is made to measure, any figure given without seeing the terrace would be unreliable. We work differently: we come to Almuñécar or La Herradura at no cost, measure up and send you a written quote with a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. What’s on that piece of paper is what you pay, with no extras appearing halfway through the job.
The quote is driven mainly by the type of system, the width and projection, the fabric you choose and the automation. A roller awning for the balcony of a town-centre flat is not the same as a large cassette awning for a terrace at Puerta del Mar, nor is a standard acrylic fabric the same as a technical one. You choose the fabric from the Sauleda and Dickson sample books.
Extras count too: a Cherubini motor, remote control, wind or sun sensor. In second homes the wind sensor almost always pays for itself, because it prevents breakdowns while the house is empty. You’ll find the details in awning motorisation.
Finally, the installation itself plays a part: the wall material, the height and the access. In hillside houses we sometimes have to plan how to get the profiles up to the terrace. All of this is set out from the start, with no surprises. You can book the visit using the form or on WhatsApp.
Do you install awnings in La Herradura and Marina del Este?
Yes. La Herradura is part of the municipality of Almuñécar and we cover it just like the rest of the area, including Marina del Este. We fit awnings in La Herradura for houses with gardens, flats and terraces by the marina, as well as pergolas, enclosures and fly screens.
Porch enclosures make a lot of sense here, because they let you enjoy the garden in the cooler months too. Among the projects on this page you can see one we installed in a garden in La Herradura, with sliding glass doors that open right up in summer and close the space off when it turns cool or windy. There’s more information in terrace and porch enclosures.
For the most exposed terraces near the marina, we usually combine a motorised cassette awning with side screens in guides that don’t flap. In houses with gardens, on the other hand, a retractable roof pergola or a folding-arm awning with a good projection over the outdoor dining area works very well.
The home visit and measuring in La Herradura are free, as they are across the rest of the Costa Tropical. We come from our base in Velez-Malaga via the A-7 and send you a combined written offer covering everything you need, with a fixed price and no obligation. And if you’re part of a community with several interested homes, we can propose a common model for all of them.
Which awning stands up best to the salt air on a flat at Puerta del Mar?
Facing the beach, salt air is no minor detail: it settles every day on the aluminium, the arms and every screw, and with the humidity it ends up causing corrosion. Rust streaks on a facade nearly always give away ordinary screws or profiles without proper protection. Choosing the right materials from the start is what extends the life of the awning.
At QUBRE we use powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings on every coastal installation. And as a system, we almost always recommend the cassette awning: when you close it, the fabric and arms are stored in an aluminium box, safe from salt, sun and dirt. You’ll notice the difference within a few summers.
The fabric matters too. Sauleda and Dickson acrylics are designed for outdoor use and stand up well to strong sun, and it’s important not to leave them rolled up wet for long. Rinsing the frame with fresh water now and then helps a lot; we explain how in how to clean and look after an awning.
If your flat is shut up for long spells, consider a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor, which retracts the awning on its own and stops a gust from damaging it. At the visit we check your terrace, the wall it will be anchored to and what the community allows, and give you a fixed quote in writing.
What permits does Almuñécar Town Hall require for an awning or a pergola?
The first thing is to distinguish the type of installation. For a retractable awning, the paperwork is usually light. A fixed pergola, on the other hand, may need a minor works licence or a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall) submitted to Almuñécar Town Hall, depending on its size, its location and what the current municipal regulations set out. As La Herradura belongs to the same municipality, the same rules apply.
For villas with a plot, planning rules also come into play: a fixed structure may have conditions on distances to boundaries or how much of the plot is built on. It’s nothing to worry about, but it’s worth checking before we make anything so nothing has to be altered later. Often it’s enough to adjust the position of the posts or the size of the structure for it to fit without any problems.
In flats and urbanisations, the community of owners has the final say on the facade and can set the model and colour. In our guide to awnings in communities of owners we explain how to raise it at the owners’ meeting and what is usually agreed. If the community already has an approved model, we stick to it and make it to measure for you.
At the free visit we tell you which procedure applies to your case and, when it’s needed, we handle the paperwork with you. For more information, see the article do I need permission to install an awning or a pergola?
Is a bioclimatic pergola worth it in Almuñécar to use the terrace all year?
In Almuñécar the winters are mild and you can enjoy the terrace for many more months than in other areas. That’s where a bioclimatic pergola makes the most of the climate: its adjustable aluminium louvres let you fine-tune the shade in summer, let the sun in on cool days and close completely when a shower comes.
It’s one of the pergolas in Almuñécar that performs best on exposed terraces, because the rigid aluminium roof copes with wind far better than fabric. The specific features, such as motorised louvres or rain and wind sensors, depend on the model, and we explain them at the visit with the samples in front of you.
To use it in wind or cold as well, it can be completed with side screens: a zip screen if you want to keep the view through the fabric, or a glass enclosure if you’re after an almost indoor space. That way a terrace in Cotobro or La Herradura becomes an outdoor living room you use in winter, in summer and on those in-between evenings, of which the Costa Tropical has plenty.
Before suggesting a bioclimatic pergola, we check the area, the structure it will rest on, the water run-off and any paperwork. If in the end it isn’t worth it in your case, we’ll tell you and suggest a simpler aluminium pergola.
Can you motorise an awning on a house in Almuñécar that’s shut up for weeks?
Yes, and it’s one of the best investments for a holiday home. The risk with a manual awning on an empty house is that someone leaves it extended, or a gust catches it half-retracted, and when you get back you find a bent arm or torn fabric. With awning motorisation in Almuñécar that risk drops dramatically.
We install Cherubini motors with remote control and the option of adding a wind sensor, which detects when the wind picks up and folds the awning away without you having to do anything. Depending on the model, there are also sun sensors so the awning extends on its own when the heat builds. You’ll find all the options in awning motorisation.
In many cases there’s no need to replace the awning: if the frame is in good condition, we fit the motor to it and, if the fabric is worn, we take the opportunity to renew it with a Sauleda or Dickson fabric. All the information is on the awning repairs and new fabric page.
We’ll also take it on if another company installed the awning. At the visit we check the condition of the roller tube, the arms and the nearest power point, and give you a fixed quote in writing. Materials come with a 2-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer and product, and we cover the installation too, with after-sales service whenever you need it.
What happens between booking the visit in Almuñécar and the installation?
It starts with a message, a call or the form on this page. We call you to arrange the visit on the day and at the time that suit you best, Monday to Saturday. If you want to save time, send us a few photos of the terrace and some rough measurements on WhatsApp, so we arrive with the options already worked out.
On the day of the visit we come to Almuñécar from our base in Velez-Malaga via the A-7. We measure up, check the wall or floor for anchoring, look at which way it faces and how exposed it is to the wind, and show you fabric samples and aluminium colours. The visit is free and doesn’t commit you to anything. If you’re away, someone else can meet us and we’ll tell you afterwards by phone what we’ve seen.
You then receive the written quote, with a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. Once it’s accepted, we make everything to measure and confirm the installation date in writing. If any paperwork is needed with the town hall or the community, we let you know and help you with it.
Installation is carried out by our own technical team, who leave everything working and explain how to use and look after it. After that we’re still available for after-sales service, with a guarantee on the structure and installation, and the 2-year warranty on materials, depending on the manufacturer and product. If you’d like to get to know us better before deciding, visit our company page.
