Pergolas in Granada designed for an inland climate
Installing pergolas in Granada is nothing like doing it on the coast. There’s no sea breeze here to corrode the fittings, but summers are very hot and dry, and in winter the frosts put fabrics, timber and fixings to the test. We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga, come up via the A-44 and measure up at your home at no cost, both in the city and in the surrounding towns.
The city and its surroundings call for different solutions. In the Zaidin or along Camino de Ronda there are lots of flats with a terrace or balcony, where drop arm or roller awnings in Granada work best. In the Realejo, the centre and the Albaicin, heritage protection means keeping things discreet. And in Armilla, Ogijares, La Zubia, Maracena or Las Gabias it’s mostly detached and semi-detached houses with gardens and pools, the natural home for a pergola.
We work with powder-coated aluminium, Sauleda and Dickson fabrics and Cherubini motors, and install with our in-house technicians, with no subcontractors. If you’re after an adjustable louvred roof, there’s a dedicated page on bioclimatic pergolas in Granada, and if it’s insects that keep you awake at night, another on made-to-measure fly screens for Granada.

The whole metropolitan area
We measure up in the city and in towns such as Armilla, La Zubia, Maracena, Monachil and Huetor Vega.
The same team from start to finish
The person who takes the measurements is the one who later installs the pergola or awning. No middlemen.
Dry heat and frost
We choose the fabric, frame and fixings with very hot summers and cold winters in mind.
Guarantee and after-sales
A guarantee on the structure and installation, and after-sales service even for awnings fitted by another company.

Centre and Realejo. Old houses and flats with balconies in a historic setting. Solutions you barely notice work best here, such as a drop arm awning, always after checking what the regulations allow.
Albaicin. A protected neighbourhood: anything visible on a facade or roof terrace needs to be looked into first. We explain how it works in our guide to permits for awnings and pergolas.
Zaidin. A neighbourhood of flats with terraces and windows that overheat in summer. The usual choice is roller awnings, plus fly screens so you can sleep with the window open.
Camino de Ronda. Buildings with high-level terraces. If the community sets the model and colour, we can help with awnings for communities.
Armilla. Detached and semi-detached houses with porches. A wall-mounted pergola fixed to the facade extends the living room outdoors and makes the most of the patio.
La Zubia and Ogijares. Homes with gardens where people eat outdoors for much of the year. A wooden pergola sits beautifully with the lawn and plants.
Maracena and Las Gabias. Residential developments of villas with pools. An aluminium pergola creates shade by the water with no varnish and no maintenance.
Monachil and Huetor Vega. Detached houses where you really feel the winter. A louvred roof with side screens lets you use the porch in the cold too: see our bioclimatic pergolas for Granada.
Dry heat in summer, frost in winter
Granada is inland, far from the influence of the sea. What works on a coastal penthouse isn’t always the best choice here. This is what we look at before recommending anything.
Very hot, dry summers
In July and August the sun beats down on patios, terraces and pools, and the ground and walls give off heat well into the night.
What we recommend: structures that let the hot air escape, such as a retractable roof pergola, and fabrics that filter the light well.
Cold winters with frost
Frosty nights and mornings white with hoar frost take their toll on fabric left extended and on unprotected timber.
What we recommend: powder-coated aluminium, retracting the fabric in the cold months and, if you want to enjoy the outdoors all year, glass enclosures.
Gardens and pools in the metropolitan area
In the detached and semi-detached houses of Armilla, Las Gabias or La Zubia, summer is lived outdoors: dining by the pool, barbecues, play areas.
What we recommend: a well-orientated aluminium pergola or wooden one, and fly screens on the doors out to the garden.

For a villa garden
With open space and lots of sun, the ideal is to create a fixed shaded area for eating, relaxing or sheltering by the water without having to retract anything every afternoon.
- Aluminium pergolaTough and varnish-free, also in wood effect.→
- Bioclimatic pergolaLouvres that control sun and airflow.→
- Wooden pergolaNatural warmth for a lawned garden.→
For a semi-detached house
Patios on semi-detached houses tend to be narrow and boxed in between party walls. A structure supported on the facade works well, with shade you can adjust as you like.
- Wall-mounted pergolaFixed to the wall to make the most of the patio.→
- Retractable roofA sliding canopy you open or fold away.→
- Retractable awningFolding shade for the upstairs terrace.→
For a flat with a terrace or balcony
Higher up, it matters to stay within the facade, respect whatever the community says and be able to sleep with the windows open on summer nights.
- Drop arm awningIdeal for balconies and windows.→
- Roller awningVertical shade and privacy.→
- Fly screensMade-to-measure roller or pleated.→
For a home in a protected area
In neighbourhoods with heritage protection, not everything is allowed. First we check what the regulations permit, then we choose discreet solutions in understated colours and with little bulk.
- Roller awningDiscreet and close to the opening.→
- Fly screensBuilt into the window opening.→
- Retractable roof pergolaFor inner courtyards, if the rules allow.→
To refresh what you already have
After several summers of strong sun and the odd frosty winter, many fabrics lose their colour and tension. Before replacing everything, we check whether new fabric or a new motor will do, even if we didn’t install it.
- New fabricMade-to-measure Sauleda and Dickson fabrics.→
- MotorisationA Cherubini motor for your current awning.→
- Cassette awningThe fabric stays protected inside its case.→

Town halls, communities and protected areas
Granada city and each town in the metropolitan area have their own bylaws. These are the three cases worth checking before you install.
Granada City Council and surrounding town halls
Armilla, Ogijares, La Zubia, Maracena, Las Gabias, Monachil and Huetor Vega each apply their own regulations. A fixed pergola may need a minor works licence or a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall); a retractable awning is usually simpler. We check it for your case.
The Albaicin and the historic centre
In areas with heritage protection, anything visible from the street is far more tightly regulated. Before suggesting anything, we check what’s allowed for your home and your street.
Communities and residential developments
In flats and semi-detached houses with shared elements, the community can set the model and colour. We explain it in our guide to awnings in communities.
We tell you which procedure you need
When the installation needs any paperwork, we explain which and prepare the documents. More detail in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Frequently asked questions about pergolas in Granada
Which pergola copes best with Granada’s dry summer heat?
In Granada the summer heat is dry and intense, and the shade also needs to stop the air getting trapped underneath. So when people ask us for pergolas in Granada, the first thing we assess isn’t the material but how the air will circulate and at what times the sun hits your terrace or garden.
A retractable roof pergola has a sliding canopy that you extend during the hottest hours and draw back at dusk, when you want to see the sky and let the built-up heat escape. A pergola with fixed aluminium louvres gives permanent, filtered shade with nothing to move. And if you want to control ventilation with a remote, an adjustable louvred roof is the most complete option; we cover it on our page on bioclimatic pergolas for Granada.
Colour matters too. A light fabric or powder coating reflects more radiation than a dark one, and some technical fabrics let a little air through. The Sauleda and Dickson sample books include fabrics designed to filter the light without turning the space underneath into an oven, and we show them to you at the visit so you can choose with the samples in the sun at your own home.
Finally, orientation counts for more than you might think. A west-facing pergola sometimes needs a side screen, such as a vertical awning, to block the low afternoon sun. We measure it and suggest it at no cost.
How much does a pergola cost in Granada, and what makes the price go up or down?
The price of pergolas in Granada depends so much on your space that we don’t publish guide prices: every pergola is made to measure, and a figure given without seeing your home would be unreliable. What we do is come and measure up at no cost, in the city or whichever town in the metropolitan area you live in, and give you a written quote with a fixed price, often in under 24 hours.
The biggest factors are the area you want to cover, whether the structure is wall-mounted on the facade or freestanding on four posts, the type of roof (sliding canopy, fixed louvres or adjustable louvres) and the material. A wooden pergola and an aluminium pergola of the same size don’t cost the same or need the same maintenance.
Where it’s anchored counts too. In a garden in La Zubia or Las Gabias the post footings may need preparing if the ground is soil or lawn, whereas on a tiled terrace in Armilla the work is different. Extras such as a motor, lighting or side screens are added depending on the model and what you really need.
If you already have an idea of what you want, send us photos and rough measurements on WhatsApp or fill in the form. That way we arrive at the visit with options designed for your space, and the quote matches what you’re looking for more closely.
Can you install a pergola or an awning in the Albaicin or Granada’s historic centre?
The Albaicin and much of Granada’s historic centre are protected for their heritage value. That doesn’t mean nothing can be installed, but it does mean that anything visible from the street or that changes the look of the building is subject to stricter rules than in the rest of the city.
In practice, fixed structures on roof terraces and visible facades are the most sensitive. Inner courtyards, on the other hand, sometimes allow more leeway. So before talking about models, we look at where the installation would go, how it would look from outside and what procedure Granada City Council requires in your particular case. There’s a general explanation in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?
Where work is possible, we usually suggest low-profile solutions in understated colours: a roller awning close to the opening, a plain fabric in earthy tones or a lightweight pergola in a courtyard that can’t be seen from the street. The aim is to gain shade and coolness without spoiling the look of a neighbourhood that is looked after with great care.
If you live in the Realejo or another part of the centre without the same protection, the rules may be different. Either way, we don’t make anything until it’s clear what’s allowed, and when it’s needed we handle the paperwork with you so you don’t have to go from one office to the next.
Do I need a licence for a pergola in Armilla, La Zubia, Maracena or another town in the metropolitan area?
Each town in the metropolitan area has its own town hall and its own bylaws, so the answer changes depending on whether you live in Armilla, Ogijares, La Zubia, Maracena, Las Gabias, Monachil or Huetor Vega. What applies to a house in one town doesn’t necessarily apply in the next. Even within Granada city, the treatment differs between a protected neighbourhood and a residential one.
As a general guide, a retractable awning usually involves simpler procedures than a fixed structure. A pergola anchored to the ground or the facade may, depending on its size, its position relative to the boundaries and whether it’s open or enclosed, need a minor works licence or a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall). We sum it up in our guide to permits for installing awnings and pergolas.
In developments of semi-detached houses there’s a second hurdle: the community. If the patio or facade is part of the shared elements, you may need the other owners’ agreement, or there may already be a set model and colour. We explain it in awnings in communities of owners.
You don’t have to research it yourself. At the visit we see the site, tell you which procedure applies in your town and, if it’s needed, prepare the paperwork. That way you avoid putting up a pergola that later causes problems with the town hall or the neighbours, and you know from the start what timescales and steps lie ahead.
How do Granada’s winter frosts affect a pergola or an awning?
In Granada the winter is cold and overnight frosts are common. Unlike on the coast, the enemy here isn’t salt but water that freezes, early-morning frost and sharp swings between the midday sun and the night. Each material responds differently to those ups and downs.
Powder-coated aluminium copes well with the cold and needs no treatment, which is why it’s the basis of most of our pergolas. Timber, on the other hand, benefits from a regular check of its protective coating so moisture doesn’t get in; if you choose a wooden pergola, we explain how to look after it. With louvred-roof pergolas, what matters is that water drains properly through the gutter and doesn’t collect.
Fabrics are the most delicate part. Fabric that spends the winter extended, wet and freezing every night loses its tension and ages early. It’s best to retract it in the cold months, especially if you have a folding-arm awning or a pergola with a sliding canopy. A cassette awning stores it inside its case and protects it better. And if you retract it dry, you avoid stains and musty smells when you open it again in spring.
If your fabric has already been through several winters, you don’t always need to replace everything. We check its condition and suggest new fabric in Sauleda or Dickson, even if another company installed the awning.
Are you also an awning company in Granada, or do you only install pergolas?
We’re an awning company in Granada as well as pergola installers. We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga and fit awnings in the city and across the metropolitan area with the same team and the same terms: free home visit, fixed-price quote and a guarantee on the installation.
In flats in neighbourhoods such as the Zaidin or Camino de Ronda, the most practical choice is usually a drop arm awning for balconies and windows, because it comes down in front of the railing and doesn’t encroach on the neighbours’ space. For larger terraces, a folding-arm awning gives generous shade that you retract when you don’t need it. If the balcony is small and you also want privacy, a roller awning drops vertically and blocks the view from the street without leaving you in the dark.
For villas with gardens, when the facade isn’t enough to hold a large awning or you want the shade to reach well away from the wall, an awning with support legs is very useful. You can see one in the photos of our work on this page, installed in the garden of a home in Granada.
All our awnings in Granada can have a Cherubini motor with remote control, and Sauleda or Dickson fabrics in plain or striped colours. If you’d like to compare systems before the visit, you’ll find the full catalogue in made-to-measure awnings. And if you already have an awning that isn’t working properly, we can repair it or fit new fabric too.
Which pergola suits a villa pool in Las Gabias, Maracena or Ogijares?
You spend many hours in the sun by a pool, and in Granada’s metropolitan area summer afternoons are long and very hot. A well-placed pergola creates a shaded spot to relax where you can eat, read or keep an eye on the children without moving parasols every half hour.
If the pool is away from the house, the usual choice is a freestanding pergola, with four posts and no support from the facade. If it’s right next to the house, a wall-mounted pergola extends the porch and makes use of the wall. For the roof, a sliding canopy lets you sunbathe whenever you like and cover up when the heat bites. If the garden is large, we orientate the structure so the shade falls exactly where you put the sunloungers during the hottest hours.
As for materials, powder-coated aluminium generally copes well with the humidity around the water and needs no varnish. If you like a natural look, there are wood-effect finishes, and we also make pergolas in real timber if you’re happy with regular maintenance. We go into detail in made-to-measure pergolas.
To use the area in spring and autumn as well, when it cools down after sunset, you can add side screens or choose an adjustable louvred roof. And if you want to stop mosquitoes getting into the house through the garden door, we can measure up for fly screens for your villa at the same visit.
How does the visit work if I live in Granada and you’re based in Velez-Malaga?
Just as in any other area we cover. We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga, come up to Granada via the A-44 and visit your home on the day we agree with you, Monday to Saturday. The visit, measuring and advice are free and don’t commit you to anything. If it’s hard for you to be at home during the week, we’ll find a slot that suits you better.
At the visit we measure the space, look at which way it faces, the type of wall or floor to anchor to and, if it’s a pergola, where the rainwater will drain. We show you fabric samples and colours and explain which option suits your home. You then receive the written quote, with a fixed price, in many cases in under 24 hours.
If you need several things, we make the most of the same trip. You can combine a garden pergola with fly screens for the bedrooms or a glass enclosure for the porch, and get a single quote covering everything. That way you can compare options at your leisure and decide what to do now and what to leave for later.
Installation is carried out by our own technical team, the same people who measure up. And we’re still there afterwards: a guarantee on the structure and installation, a 2-year warranty on materials depending on the manufacturer and product, and after-sales service. You can book the visit using the form or via our contact page.
