Pergolas in Marbella designed for living outdoors all year round
In Marbella, so much of home life happens outside. That’s why pergolas in Marbella are more than just a roof for shade: they’re the dining area by the pool, the lounge in the garden or an extension of the living room on a penthouse. A good pergola has to give shade in August, stand up to the wind blowing in from the Strait of Gibraltar and let the light through in winter.
The villas in Nueva Andalucia, Rio Real and Elviria tend to have a plot, a pool and room for a freestanding structure or one fixed to the house. In Las Chapas and along the Milla de Oro (the Golden Mile), close to the sea, salt air is the bigger factor. And on the penthouses of Puerto Banus or the old town, a wall-mounted pergola over the terrace is the way to gain an extra room. If it’s retractable shade you’re after, have a look at our page on awnings in Marbella.
We make every pergola to measure in powder-coated aluminium or wood, with stainless fixings, and install it with our own technical team. If it has a sliding canopy, we use Sauleda and Dickson fabrics. The home visit, measuring and advice are free.

Nueva Andalucia. Plots with gardens and pools, ideal for a freestanding bioclimatic pergola that creates an outdoor lounge by the water.
Rio Real. Villas and houses with porches. A wall-mounted pergola extends the house into the garden without taking over the middle of the plot.
Elviria. Homes with gardens and south-facing terraces. A wooden pergola sits well in green surroundings; there’s also wood-effect aluminium.
Las Chapas. Houses near the beach, with salt air and wind. We recommend a powder-coated aluminium pergola with stainless fixings.
Milla de Oro. Frontline penthouses and residences. A bioclimatic pergola with zip screen sides lets you use the terrace even when it’s windy.
Puerto Banus. Penthouses and bar and restaurant terraces. A retractable roof pergola lets you adjust the shade throughout the day.
San Pedro Alcantara. Family homes and townhouses with patios. If you want to use the porch in winter, combine a pergola with a glass enclosure.
Sun, wind and downpours: what a pergola in Marbella has to cope with
A pergola is a fixed structure that lives outdoors all year round. In Marbella, these are the factors that matter most in its design.
Strong sun over the garden and pool
In summer the sun beats down on the pool area and on sea-facing terraces. Without shade, that space becomes unusable in the middle of the day.
What we recommend: the adjustable louvres of a bioclimatic pergola to control light and airflow, or a retractable roof with a sliding canopy.
Levante and poniente
The easterly levante and westerly poniente winds funnel in through the Strait and push hard on roofs and sides. A tensioned fabric without proper calculations suffers; a well-anchored structure doesn’t.
What we recommend: posts and fixings suited to the ground and the wall, and sides closed in with windbreaks with side guides or a zip screen.
Heavy rain and salt air
In autumn and winter, heavy showers arrive in no time, and near the sea the salty humidity attacks any metal that isn’t protected.
What we recommend: falls and gutters designed to carry the water away, plus powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings throughout the structure.
Choose your space and find out which pergola suits it
A first idea based on the space you want to cover. At the visit we fine-tune it with real measurements.

Licence, community and plot: the paperwork for a pergola in Marbella
A pergola is a fixed structure, so it’s worth checking the rules before anything is made. These are the three things we check.
Marbella Town Hall
Depending on its size, its position and whether it’s freestanding or wall-mounted, a pergola may need a minor works licence or a declaración responsable (a sworn statement to the town hall). It’s set by the current municipal regulations, and we check it case by case.
Community or urbanisation
On urbanisations and in apartment buildings, the community may have a say on the look, the colours or the use of shared areas. We explain it in awnings and communities of owners.
Position on the plot
Planning rules may set conditions such as how much of the plot can be built on or the distance from boundaries. We take this into account with you before deciding where the pergola goes in the garden.
We handle the paperwork for your pergola
If your pergola needs any formalities, we tell you which and prepare the paperwork when it’s needed. More in do I need permission to install a pergola?

Frequently asked questions about pergolas in Marbella
What’s the best pergola for a villa pool in Marbella?
The pool area is where a pergola in Marbella earns its keep, and also where a poor choice shows the most. You need shade in the middle of the day, a bit of sun when you fancy it, ventilation so the heat doesn’t build up underneath and a structure that copes with humidity, splashes and, if you’re near the sea, salt air.
For many villas in Nueva Andalucia or Rio Real, the most complete option is a bioclimatic pergola: its aluminium louvres tilt to let the light through or close completely, and with the louvres closed it also keeps out the rain, depending on the model. That way you can use the same space at midday in August and on an autumn evening.
If you’d prefer something simpler, a retractable roof pergola has a sliding canopy in Sauleda or Dickson fabric that you extend or fold away whenever you like. And an aluminium pergola with a fixed roof gives permanent, maintenance-free shade. All three can be freestanding, on their own posts, or fixed to the house.
Before deciding, we look at where the sun falls at each time of day, how the wind blows across your plot and where the rainwater needs to drain so it doesn’t end up in the pool. At the free visit we suggest the position, size and type, and give you a written quote with a fixed price.
Is a bioclimatic pergola worth it in Marbella, or will an aluminium one do?
Both are made of aluminium, but they work differently. A standard aluminium pergola has a fixed roof or fixed louvres: it gives constant shade and is very stable. A bioclimatic pergola, on the other hand, has adjustable louvres that open and close, usually with a motor, to control light and airflow and, depending on the model, shut out the rain.
In Marbella a bioclimatic pergola makes a lot of sense when the space is used all year round: an outdoor dining area, a lounge by the pool or a penthouse terrace. In summer you angle the louvres to block the sun and let the air flow; in winter you open them to let the light in; and if one of those autumn downpours arrives, you close them.
A fixed aluminium pergola or a retractable roof is enough when you mainly want shade in summer, when the area isn’t used much in winter or when you’d like a simpler solution. It also comes in a wood-effect finish, which looks great with gardens and Mediterranean-style houses.
The decision depends on how you live in that space, which is why we’d rather look at it with you. At the free visit we explain what each system brings to your property, how the water drains away and which side screens could complete it, such as a zip screen. Then we give you a written quote for one or both options so you can compare.
Will a pergola stand up to the levante and poniente winds in Marbella?
A well-designed, well-anchored pergola is actually the most stable way to get shade in an area as windy as Marbella. Unlike an awning, which has to be retracted when the wind blows, an aluminium structure with posts and beams works as a rigid whole. But for that to be the case, it has to be sized and anchored with the wind on each plot in mind.
At the visit we study where the levante and poniente hit your home, whether the pergola will be freestanding or fixed to the facade, what ground the posts will stand on and what fixings it needs. In open areas such as Las Chapas, Elviria or the Milla de Oro we take particular care with the anchoring, and we always use stainless fixings.
What suffers most in the wind is fabric. If your pergola has a retractable roof or a sliding canopy, it’s best to fold it away when it’s blowing hard, just like an awning. On bioclimatic pergolas, the adjustable louvres offer less resistance than fabric and, depending on the model, can include sensors that move them into the safest position.
To stay underneath when the wind gets up, the sides are the key: a zip screen or windbreaks with side guides are held along their whole length and stop the wind. We’ll explain it in detail, on your own terrace, at the free visit.
What affects the price of pergolas in Marbella?
We don’t give ballpark prices because every pergola is a made-to-measure project, and in Marbella there’s a big difference between covering the porch of a house in San Pedro Alcantara and creating an outdoor lounge by the pool of a villa. What we can do is explain what drives the quote, so you can compare with confidence.
The first factor is the type of pergola: bioclimatic with adjustable louvres, aluminium with a fixed roof, wooden, wall-mounted or with a retractable roof. Then come the size and the number of posts, the colour or finish of the aluminium, the type of roof and extras such as motorised louvres or sensors, depending on the model.
What we find at your home also plays a part: the ground the posts will stand on, the wall if it’s fixed to the house, how the rainwater is collected and whether you want to close in any side with a zip screen, windbreaks or a glass enclosure. If the pergola needs anything from the town hall, we tell you and handle the paperwork when it’s needed.
The home visit, measuring and advice are free. Once we’ve seen it, we send you a written quote, with no obligation and a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. If you’d like an idea beforehand, our pergolas page has an online designer where you can play with roofs, colours and sizes.
Do I need a licence to put up a pergola at my home in Marbella or San Pedro Alcantara?
It’s quite likely that some paperwork will be needed, because a pergola is a fixed structure, not a retractable item like an awning. Depending on its size, its position on the plot and whether it’s freestanding or wall-mounted, it may require a minor works licence or a declaración responsable submitted to Marbella Town Hall, which is also responsible for San Pedro Alcantara.
As well as the municipal regulations, planning rules may set conditions on how much of the plot can be built on or the distance from boundaries, and in some cases it matters whether the pergola can be seen from the street. As these rules change and every plot is different, we check case by case before anything is made.
If you live on an urbanisation or in an apartment building, you also need to consider the community of owners: it may have rules on the look, the colours or the use of terraces and shared areas. In our guide to awnings and communities of owners we explain how to raise it at the owners’ meeting.
You don’t have to work it out on your own. At the visit we review your case, tell you which procedure applies and handle the paperwork when it’s needed. For more detail, read do I need permission to install a pergola? And remember that a retractable awning usually involves simpler paperwork; if that suits you, take a look at awnings in Marbella.
Wooden pergola or wood-effect aluminium for a garden in Elviria or Las Chapas?
It’s a common question in garden areas such as Elviria or Las Chapas, where the pergola lives alongside plants, lawn and, often, the sea breeze. Both options give a warm, natural look, but they behave differently over time. The choice affects the look, but also how much time you want to spend maintaining it each year.
A wooden pergola has a charm that’s hard to match: real texture, grain and a very welcoming feel. In return, it needs regular treatment with protective products so the sun, humidity and salt air don’t crack or fade it. If you enjoy looking after it and want the real thing, it’s a great choice.
An aluminium pergola with a wood-effect finish gives a similar look with no varnishing or sanding. Powder-coated aluminium doesn’t rot or warp and, with stainless fixings, copes very well close to the sea. Near the beach, as in Las Chapas, it’s usually the most practical option in the long run.
Either can be completed with a retractable roof with a sliding canopy, and if you choose aluminium you can also go for adjustable louvres. At the free visit we show you the finishes, explain the real upkeep of each material and give you a written quote for the option you prefer, or for both so you can compare.
Can a pergola in Marbella be enclosed so I can use it in winter?
Yes, and it’s one of the smartest ways to get the most from a pergola in Marbella. Winter here is mild and on many days you’ll want to be outside, but the wind and the odd shower get in the way. By closing in one or more sides, you turn the pergola into a sheltered room you can use almost all year, while still being able to open it up again when the good weather returns.
There are several ways to do it. A zip screen is a vertical fabric screen held in zip guides: it blocks wind and sun, and rolls away when you don’t need it. Windbreaks with side guides do a similar job and can include clear windows, depending on the model.
If you’re after a more complete enclosure, an aluminium and glass enclosure with sliding panels turns the area into an almost indoor space, with light and views. On porches and penthouses in Puerto Banus or the old town it’s a way to gain an extra room; at villas, it gives you an outdoor dining area you can use in January.
It’s worth planning for it from the start, even if you enclose it later, because the structure and posts need to be ready to take those screens. And if the enclosure involves any paperwork or an agreement with the community, we’ll tell you at the visit and handle the paperwork when it’s needed. The visit and quote are free.
What’s the process for installing a pergola in Marbella, from the moment I ask for a quote?
It all starts with your request via the form, on WhatsApp or by phone, Monday to Saturday from 8am to 8pm. We look after you from our base in Velez-Malaga and plan our visits to Marbella so we can give your property the time a pergola needs, which is quite a bit more than an awning.
At the free visit we measure the space, assess the orientation, the wind and the type of ground or wall, and see where the rainwater needs to drain. We show you finishes and roof options, and check whether anything is needed from the town hall or the community. If you send us photos and rough measurements beforehand, the visit is even more productive.
Then you receive a written quote, with no obligation and a fixed price, often in under 24 hours. If you accept it, we handle the paperwork when it’s needed, make the pergola to measure and our own technical team installs it on the agreed date, with no subcontractors.
Materials come with a 2-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer and the product, and on top of that we stand behind the structure and the installation. Our after-sales service is still there for adjustments or check-ups. If you’d like to know more about how we work, visit our awning and pergola company. And if you later want to complete your home with retractable shade, take a look at awnings in Marbella.
