Your awning company in Velez-Malaga, just around the corner
QUBRE has its premises on Avenida Pablo Iglesias in Velez-Malaga. From here we head out every morning to install awnings in Velez-Malaga and the rest of the Axarquia, and this is where we come back to when a customer calls us for an adjustment or a repair. You can tell we’re close by: we measure up without rushing, and we know the streets of the old town, the way into the coastal urbanisations and the tracks out to the country properties inland.
Velez-Malaga is a municipality with many faces. In the old town there are flats with narrow balconies and whitewashed facades; in Caleta de Velez, Almayate, Benajarafe or Chilches, penthouses and terraces that look out to sea and take the wind head-on; and inland, country houses and cortijos (traditional farmhouses) with porches and gardens where a pergola in Velez-Malaga completely changes your summer. Each one calls for a different solution.
We work with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, Cherubini motors, powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings. The home visit, measuring and quote are free, and the price we give you in writing is fixed.

Velez-Malaga town centre. Flats with balconies and houses in the historic old town. A drop arm awning or a roller awning works really well here, as neither juts out over the street.
Caleta de Velez. Seafront homes right by the harbour: wind and salt air. We recommend a cassette awning and stainless fixings.
Torre del Mar. Penthouses, the seafront promenade and plenty of bars and restaurants. It has its own page: awnings in Torre del Mar.
Almayate. Houses with patios and coastal homes. Aluminium pergolas and retractable awnings are the most popular choices.
Benajarafe. Urbanisations with sea views and exposed terraces. A good spot for bioclimatic pergolas and zip screen side enclosures.
Chilches and Valle-Niza. Beach homes and communities of owners. Matching awnings across the whole facade, and fly screens.
Lagos. A coastal village at the eastern end of the municipality, with low-rise houses and south-facing terraces where a retractable awning gives shade during the sunniest hours.
Cajiz, Los Puertas and Trapiche. Inland, with country houses and rural properties. More heat and more terral: wooden pergolas, aluminium ones or retractable roof pergolas for porches and pools.
Sun, terral, levante and salt air: what each home needs
A penthouse in Caleta is a world away from a porch in Cajiz. This is what we take into account before recommending an awning or a pergola in Velez-Malaga.
Strong sun almost all year round
South- and west-facing terraces get direct sun for hours on end, and the facade holds on to the heat until well into the night.
What we recommend: light-coloured acrylic fabrics or screen fabric, and awnings with a generous projection so the shade reaches the wall.
Levante, poniente and terral
Gusts of levante (easterly) and poniente (westerly) wind sweep in along the coast; in summer the terral blows hot and dry from inland. A badly anchored awning is the first thing to suffer.
What we recommend: a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor, fixings chosen to suit the facade and, if needed, windbreaks with side guides.
Salt air on the seafront
In Caleta, Torre del Mar, Benajarafe or Chilches, the sea breeze corrodes ordinary fixings and ruins poorly protected profiles within a few years.
What we recommend: powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings and a cassette awning to protect the fabric when it’s not in use.
Choose your home and we’ll tell you what works in Velez-Malaga
A first pointer based on the type of property. We confirm it at the free home visit, once we’ve measured up and seen your facade.
For a balcony in Velez-Malaga
On narrow balconies, the key is to give shade without jutting out over the street or hitting the railing, and to match the neighbours’ awnings if the community requires it.
- Drop arm awningArms that drop down in front of the railing.→
- Roller awningShade and privacy for small balconies.→
- Awnings for communitiesThe same model and colour across the whole facade.→
For a terrace by the sea
On the seafront there’s wind and salt air. You want a system that protects the fabric, a motor with a sensor and materials that won’t rust.
- Cassette awningThe fabric is stored away in an aluminium case.→
- Bioclimatic pergolaA louvred roof that holds up better than fabric.→
- Zip screenA side enclosure that stays put in the wind.→
For a porch or a garden inland
Inland the heat is fiercer and there’s more space. A pergola creates a lasting patch of shade for eating outdoors or relaxing by the pool.
- Wooden pergolaRight at home on country houses and cortijos.→
- Retractable roof pergolaA sliding canopy to control the shade.→
- Aluminium pergolaMaintenance-free, also in a wood-effect finish.→
For a bar or restaurant terrace
A bar terrace needs shade for lots of tables, protection from the wind and fabric that can take daily use. And sometimes paperwork with the town hall.
- Bar awningsSolutions designed for hospitality.→
- Windbreak awningCloses off the terrace when the levante blows.→
- Monobloc awningLarge sizes with extra stability.→
To repair or renew your awning
Often you don’t need a new awning: new fabric, a new motor or a replacement arm will leave it as good as new. We’ll check it over even if we didn’t install it.
- Repairs and new fabricMade-to-measure Sauleda and Dickson fabrics.→
- MotorisationA Cherubini motor for your existing awning.→
- Cassette awningIf it’s time to replace it, the one that lasts longest on the coast.→

Licences, communities and rural land in Velez-Malaga
Before installing, we check which procedure applies to your case. These are the three most common scenarios in the municipality.
Velez-Malaga Town Hall
A retractable awning usually involves simple procedures; a fixed pergola above a certain size may need a minor works licence or a “declaración responsable” (a sworn statement to the town hall). It depends on the municipal by-laws and on each case.
Community of owners
If you live in an apartment block or an urbanisation, the facade is a common element: the community can set the model and colour. We explain how in our guide to awnings in communities of owners.
Country houses inland
Building on rural land comes with more restrictions. Before planning a fixed pergola on a property in Cajiz or Trapiche, we go through what can be done with you.
We handle the paperwork when it’s needed
If your installation needs any paperwork, we tell you what it is and prepare the documents. Find out more in do I need permission for an awning or a pergola?

Frequently asked questions about awnings in Velez-Malaga
How much does it cost to install an awning in Velez-Malaga?
There’s no single price, because every awning is made to measure for the facade and for how you’ll use it. That’s why at QUBRE we don’t give ballpark figures over the phone: we’d rather come to your home in Velez-Malaga, measure up and give you a real quote, in writing and with a fixed price.
The biggest factors are the type of awning (a drop arm awning for a balcony in the old town has nothing in common with a five-metre cassette awning for a penthouse in Caleta), the width and projection, the fabric you choose from the Sauleda and Dickson sample books, whether you want a Cherubini motor and wind sensor, and the type of wall it has to be anchored to.
Another thing that affects the quote is which way the terrace faces. A west-facing terrace in Velez old town gets the harshest afternoon sun, and there a more technical fabric or a little extra projection, so the shade reaches the wall, may be worth it. At the visit we see it for ourselves and take you through each option without any rush.
Access matters too: fitting on a ground floor in Almayate is very different from a fifth floor with no goods lift. We look at all of this at the visit, which is free and with no obligation, and you’ll often have your quote in under 24 hours.
If you already have an awning and want to give it a new lease of life, take a look at our awning repairs and new fabric page first: it often works out much cheaper than replacing the whole thing.
Do I need a licence to install an awning or a pergola in Velez-Malaga?
It depends on what you’re installing and where. In general, a retractable awning on a home involves simpler procedures than a fixed pergola, which, depending on its size and location, may require a minor works licence or a “declaración responsable” (a sworn statement) submitted to Velez-Malaga Town Hall. The municipal by-laws have the final say, and they can change over time.
If you live in an apartment block or an urbanisation in Benajarafe, Chilches or Caleta, you also need to involve the community of owners: the facade is a common element and the community can require a specific model and colour so that all the awnings match. We explain it in our guide to awnings in communities of owners.
An awning on the main facade, visible from the street, isn’t the same as one in an inner courtyard either: anything facing a public street tends to be more tightly regulated. So before we make anything, we check where the installation will go and whether there are any restrictions in your street or building.
For country houses inland, on rural land, the restrictions are greater, and it’s worth checking before planning a fixed structure.
You don’t have to work it out yourself: at the visit we check what applies to your case and, if needed, we handle the paperwork. There’s more detail in the article do I need permission to install an awning or a pergola?
Which awning best withstands the wind in Caleta de Velez and along the Velez-Malaga coast?
Along the coastal strip of the municipality, from Caleta to Benajarafe via Almayate and Torre del Mar, wind is the factor that most shapes the choice. The levante and poniente blow in with strong gusts several times a year and, in summer, the terral arrives hot and dry from inland.
No fabric awning is designed to stay extended in a strong wind, so the first thing is being able to retract it in time. That’s why on the coast we almost always recommend motorisation with a wind sensor: the Cherubini motor retracts the awning by itself when it detects gusts, even if you’re not at home. You’ll find it all explained in awning motorisation.
As for the system, a cassette awning protects the fabric and arms inside an aluminium case and stands up better to wear and tear on the coast. If you want to close off one side of the terrace so you can sit outside when it’s windy, the answer is a zip screen or a windbreak awning with side guides, both held in place along their entire length.
Fixings are the other half of safety. Screwing into a load-bearing wall isn’t the same as into hollow brick or a slab edge, and on the coast we always use stainless fixings so the salt air doesn’t weaken them over the years.
And for very exposed terraces, a bioclimatic pergola with a rigid aluminium roof is more stable than any fabric. At the visit we’ll tell you honestly what suits your facade.
Do you repair awnings in Velez-Malaga even if you didn’t install them?
Yes. A big part of our work in Velez-Malaga is fixing awnings installed by another company that no longer exists or doesn’t answer the phone. We check the awning over and tell you what’s wrong with it and whether it’s worth repairing.
The most common faults are fabric that’s torn or faded by the sun, an arm that no longer holds the tension, a worn-out spring, a motor that doesn’t respond or a lost remote control. In many cases all it takes is a new part or new fabric, and the awning is as good as new for far less than the cost of a new one.
Before changing anything, we give you a written quote setting out what we’ll do, at a fixed price. If we see that the frame is badly damaged and it isn’t worth it, we’ll tell you that clearly too, so you can decide with all the information.
For new fabric we work with Sauleda and Dickson, with wide sample ranges in plains and stripes, and we make it to measure for your existing awning. If you’d like to motorise it at the same time, we can also fit a Cherubini motor with a remote control and wind sensor.
You’ll find all the details on awning repairs and fabric replacement. The quickest way is to send us a photo of the awning on WhatsApp: very often that’s enough for us to point you in the right direction before we come out.
Which pergola suits a country house inland in Velez-Malaga?
Inland, in areas such as Cajiz, Los Puertas or Trapiche, the heat is fiercer than on the coast and houses usually have a porch, a garden or a pool. There, a well-positioned pergola creates a lasting patch of shade for eating outdoors, reading or relaxing during the sunniest hours.
If you’re after a rustic look that suits the house, a wooden pergola is the most natural option, although it needs some maintenance over time. If you’d rather not have to think about it, an aluminium pergola also comes in a wood-effect finish and never needs varnishing.
Before choosing the material, we look at where the sun falls at each hour and where the wind comes from on your plot. Sometimes the best spot isn’t right up against the house, but by the pool or wherever you really spend your time in summer.
To adjust the shade throughout the day, a retractable roof pergola has a sliding canopy that you extend or retract. And if you want to use the space in winter or in the rain too, a bioclimatic pergola with adjustable louvres is the most complete option.
Bear in mind that on rural land, fixed structures face tighter planning restrictions. At the visit we review your case, suggest the option that fits and, if needed, help you with the paperwork.
Do you install awnings for bars and restaurants in Velez-Malaga?
Yes. We work with bars, restaurants and shops in Velez-Malaga town centre, in Caleta and along the Torre del Mar promenade. A hospitality terrace has different needs from a home: lots of tables in the shade, daily use, customers who don’t want to be too hot or windswept, and a smart image.
Depending on the space, the solution might be a large retractable awning, a monobloc awning for extra stability, an awning with support legs where the facade alone isn’t enough, or a pergola. To close off the sides when the levante blows, windbreaks with side guides are the most practical choice.
Fabric matters a lot in hospitality: it has to cope with sun every day, be easy to clean and hold its colour. We work with Sauleda and Dickson fabrics, and with some of them it’s possible to add your business’s branding, depending on the model. A Cherubini motor with a remote control or wall switch makes opening and closing every day effortless.
If the terrace is on a public street, the installation usually has to fit in with the town hall’s terrace permit. We tell you what to bear in mind and handle the paperwork when it’s needed.
We try to install outside opening hours so your business isn’t affected. There’s more information on our awnings for bars and restaurants page.
How soon can you come and measure up in Velez-Malaga?
As our head office is in the town itself, Velez-Malaga is the area where it’s easiest for us to arrange visits. We schedule the measuring around your availability, Monday to Saturday, and try to make it as soon as possible.
At the visit we measure the space and look at which way it faces, the wind that comes in, the type of wall or floor to anchor to and, for a pergola, where the rainwater will drain. We also show you the fabric sample book and explain the options that suit you. It costs nothing and doesn’t commit you to anything.
If you can’t be at home in the morning, we’ll find a time that works for you. And if you want to get ahead, send us a few photos of the terrace or window and some rough measurements beforehand: that way we arrive with the best-fitting options already in mind.
Then we send you the written quote, with a fixed price, and you’ll often have it in under 24 hours. If you accept it, we make the awning or pergola to measure and give you the installation date in writing.
If you’re in a hurry, for example because summer or a celebration is coming up, let us know when you request the visit. You can do it through the form, on WhatsApp or by dropping into our premises on Avenida Pablo Iglesias. And if you’d like to get to know us better, see how we work.
Do you also install enclosures and fly screens in Velez-Malaga?
Yes. As well as awnings and pergolas, in Velez-Malaga we install aluminium and glass terrace and porch enclosures and made-to-measure fly screens for windows and doors. They’re often combined: a terrace with an awning for summer and an enclosure so you can use it all year, or a house with awnings and fly screens on the bedroom windows.
An enclosure turns the terrace into a usable space in winter or when it’s windy, without losing light. On our terrace enclosures page you’ll see the systems we install, and on this page you’ll find photos of an enclosure we fitted in Velez-Malaga.
For enclosures we use powder-coated aluminium and glass, with profiles that stand up well to the sun and the coastal humidity. We adapt each one to the terrace or porch, and if your building belongs to a community or the enclosure needs any paperwork with the town hall, we tell you what it is and handle the documents when needed.
Fly screens are almost essential near the vega (the fertile river plain) and in country houses inland, where there are more mosquitoes in summer. We make them roller, pleated or sliding, depending on the opening and how it’s used. You’ll find them all under made-to-measure fly screens.
If you want to sort out several things at once, ask for them at the same visit: we measure everything in one go and give you a single written quote, with a fixed price and no obligation.
