Awnings in Motril for gentle sun, levante and salt air
Looking for awnings in Motril isn’t the same as looking for them in an inland village. Here the sun is strong almost all year round, the levante (the easterly wind) blows in along the coast and the sea air carries salt a long way into town. At QUBRE we design every awning around those three things, whether it’s for a balcony in the town centre or a flat on Playa Poniente.
Motril brings together very different settings within one municipality: flats and apartment blocks in town, terraces looking out over the Mediterranean at Playa Granada, life around the Varadero and the port, and country houses among the greenhouses towards Carchuna and Calahonda. That’s why, as well as awnings, people ask us for pergolas in Motril for porches and patios, and fly screens in Motril for bedrooms and terrace doors.
Fabrics are by Sauleda or Dickson, motors by Cherubini and frames in powder-coated aluminium, always with stainless fixings. Before we make anything we come to your home, measure up and give you a written quote with no obligation and a fixed price.

Map of Motril

Town centre. Flats and apartment blocks with balconies over the street. A drop arm awning shades the window without sticking out too far over the pavement.
Playa Granada. Terraces open to the sea and exposed to the levante. Here a cassette awning with a motor and wind sensor is the safest choice.
Playa Poniente. Seafront flats where you really notice the salt air. We recommend powder-coated frames and Cherubini motorisation so it retracts in time.
Varadero and port. Homes and business premises by the port. For business terraces, have a look at our awnings for bars and restaurants.
Calahonda. A coastal village with houses and terraces in the sun. Of all the pergolas in Motril, the aluminium one suits it best here: fixed shade you never have to retract.
Carchuna. Country houses surrounded by greenhouses, with more insects in summer. Made-to-measure fly screens are almost a must.
Subtropical climate and the levante wind: how we deal with it
Motril has mild winters and long summers, and that changes how you use your terrace. This is what we weigh up before recommending a system.
A terrace in use almost all year
With mild winters, the terrace isn’t shut up in September: it’s still used in autumn and spring, so the fabric works for many more months than in other areas.
What we recommend: Sauleda or Dickson acrylic fabrics that stand up well to the sun, in colours that won’t fade quickly.
Levante on the coast
At Playa Granada, Playa Poniente or Calahonda the levante blows in gusts that can damage an awning left extended with no one keeping an eye on it.
What we recommend: a Cherubini motor with a wind sensor and, if you want to close off one side, windbreaks with side guides.
Humidity and greenhouses
Coastal humidity and the farmland mean there are more mosquitoes on summer nights than in the middle of a city.
What we recommend: roller or pleated fly screens on bedrooms and terrace doors, made to measure for each opening.
Tell us about your home and we’ll tell you what works in Motril
This is a first idea based on the type of home or business. The final recommendation comes after we’ve measured up at the free visit.
For a flat in Motril town centre
In a town-centre building, the usual aim is to shade windows and balconies facing the street, without bothering the neighbours and respecting whatever the community has decided about the facade.
- Drop arm awningShade for narrow windows and balconies.→
- Roller awningCovers the railing and gives you privacy.→
- Awnings for communitiesOne model for the whole building.→
For a terrace on the beach in Motril
Frontline means levante and salt. The sensible choice is an awning that stores the fabric away when it’s not in use and retracts on its own if the wind gets up.
- Cassette awningFabric and arms inside a closed case.→
- MotorisationCherubini motor with a wind sensor.→
- Zip screenA taut vertical screen in side guides.→
For a house among the farmland
Houses surrounded by greenhouses have large porches, lots of sun and plenty of insects in summer. Fixed shade and protected openings make sense here.
- Aluminium pergolaPermanent shade with no maintenance.→
- Fly screensWindows and doors free of mosquitoes.→
- Support legsGround support for long-projection awnings.→
For a business in Motril
A hospitality terrace is used every day and has to protect lots of tables from the sun and wind at once, while looking smart.

- Windbreak awningClosed sides when the levante blows.→
- Monobloc awningMore rigidity across large widths.→
To bring an awning in Motril back to life
An awning with sun-damaged fabric or a motor that won’t respond can usually be fixed. We’ll check it over even if another company installed it and tell you whether it’s worth it.

Town hall, community and farmland in Motril
Every installation comes with some paperwork, and it’s nearly always simpler than it looks. These are the cases we see most in the municipality.
Motril Town Hall
An awning that retracts isn’t treated the same as a fixed structure. A pergola may need a minor works licence or a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall) depending on its size and location; the current municipal regulations decide.
Apartment blocks and urbanisations
In town-centre flats or beach apartments, the facade belongs to all the owners and the community can decide the model and colour. We explain it in our guide to awnings in communities.
Plots among the greenhouses
On non-developable rural land, building is more restricted. If you’d like a fixed pergola at a country house in Carchuna or Calahonda, we’ll look into it with you before proposing anything.
We tell you which procedure applies and help you with it
If your awning or pergola needs paperwork, we prepare it with you. You’ll find the full guide in permits for awnings and pergolas in Malaga and Granada.

Frequently asked questions about awnings in Motril
Which awning is best for a flat on Playa Granada or Playa Poniente?
On Motril’s seafront an awning has two clear enemies: the levante, which blows in from the east in gusts, and the salt air, which settles on the arms, brackets and screws day after day. An awning designed for an inland patio ages far faster than normal here, so choosing the right system matters more than the colour of the fabric.
For most awnings on Playa Granada and Playa Poniente we recommend a cassette awning. When it’s retracted, the fabric and arms sit inside an aluminium case, protected from the sun, the night-time damp and the salt. The frame is powder-coated and the fixings are stainless, which is what prevents the rust stains you see on so many facades along the coast.
The second element is the motor. A beach flat is often empty for days, and an awning left out in a levante can end up with a bent arm or torn fabric. A Cherubini motor with a wind sensor retracts it automatically when it detects strong movement. We explain it in detail in awning motorisation.
If you also want to sit out on the terrace when it’s windy, the most exposed side can be closed off with a zip screen, which is held in guides and doesn’t flap. At the free visit we look at which way your terrace faces, the type of facade and what your community allows, and suggest the combination that makes sense for you.
How much do awnings in Motril cost to install, and what affects the quote?
We’d rather not quote figures blind, because two awnings of the same width can have very different prices. What we can do is come and measure up in Motril at no cost, see your terrace or window and give you a fixed price in writing, with no small print and no obligation. That quote often reaches you in under 24 hours, so you can compare it at your leisure.
The biggest factors are the system (a drop arm awning for a town-centre window is nothing like a long-projection cassette awning for a seafront penthouse), the sizes, the fabric you choose from the Sauleda and Dickson sample books, the aluminium finish and whether you want a Cherubini motor, remote control or sensors.
Where it’s being fitted matters too. Every bracket needs the right plug and screw, and anchoring into concrete isn’t the same as anchoring into brickwork; on some buildings we have to install from scaffolding or with lifting equipment. On the coast we always use stainless fixings, because cutting corners on that detail costs you dearly over time.
If you already have an awning and the frame is sound, you may not need a new one: replacing the fabric or motorising it can be much cheaper. Have a look at our awning repairs and new fabric page or book the visit using the form and we’ll assess it together.
Do you fit fly screens in Motril for country houses next to the greenhouses?
Yes, and in Motril it’s one of the jobs that makes most sense. The mild climate, coastal humidity and farmland mean mosquitoes are a real problem on summer nights, especially in houses in Carchuna, Calahonda and the outskirts, but also in town-centre flats with the windows open for air.
We make fly screens in Motril to measure for every opening. Roller screens are the most common for windows, because they roll up into a small box and are out of sight when you don’t need them. For terrace doors or doors out to the garden, pleated screens work better, as they open sideways and have no step, or sliding ones if the opening is wide. You’ll find them all explained in made-to-measure fly screens.
Measuring properly is the key. A fly screen that doesn’t fit leaves gaps for insects to get in, so at the visit we measure every window and door, check whether the frame is square and see how each sash opens so the screen doesn’t get in the way.
Many customers use the same visit to sort out shade for the terrace with an awning, or a porch with a pergola. We prepare a single written proposal covering everything, and our own team does the installation. If you’d like to get ahead, send us photos of the openings on WhatsApp.
Which pergola works best at a country house in Carchuna or Calahonda?
The country houses in the east of the municipality have space, lots of sun and owners who want to live outdoors for most of the year. One of the pergolas in Motril that makes most sense there is one that creates a steady area of shade next to the house or pool, without having to retract anything every time the weather changes.
An aluminium pergola is the most practical option: it doesn’t rust in the humidity, needs no varnish and can have a wood-effect finish if you’re after a warmer look. If you prefer real timber, a wooden pergola suits country houses very well, although it needs some maintenance over the years.
To control how much shade you have at any moment, the roof can be a sliding canopy or, in the most complete version, a bioclimatic pergola with adjustable louvres that open to let air through and close to keep off a shower. It’s the one that extends the use of the porch furthest into autumn and winter, which is a real bonus in Motril’s climate.
Before suggesting a model we check which way it faces, the prevailing wind and where the rainwater will drain. And because fixed structures on farmland face more planning restrictions, we go through what can be done on your plot with you before we make anything.
Do I need permission from Motril Town Hall to put up an awning or a pergola?
The short answer is that it depends on the type of installation. A retractable awning on a home usually involves a simple procedure, whereas a fixed pergola, depending on its size and where it goes, may need a minor works licence or a «declaración responsable» (a sworn statement to the town hall) submitted to Motril Town Hall. The municipal regulations are the reference and can change, so we check each case and never take anything for granted.
In apartment blocks and urbanisations there’s a second hurdle: the community of owners. Because the outside of the building belongs to all the owners, the owners’ meeting can agree the model, the fabric colour or even the fitting height so the building looks uniform. If you’re unsure how to raise it at the meeting, read our guide to awnings in communities of owners.
Country houses on non-developable land, like many of those among the greenhouses, face tighter limits on fixed structures. There it’s worth studying the case before designing anything, and sometimes the answer is a removable system or an awning instead of a pergola.
You don’t have to research it on your own. At the visit we tell you which procedure applies and, when it’s needed, we handle the paperwork. There’s more information in our article do I need permission to install an awning or a pergola?
Will you come to Motril to measure up even though you’re based in Velez-Malaga?
Yes. If you’re looking for an awning company in Motril that will come and measure up without charging for the visit, count on us: Motril is part of our regular working area on the Costa Tropical, along with Salobreña, Almuñécar and Granada. We set off from our premises in Velez-Malaga and come along the A-7, so the visit, measuring and advice are free here too, just as they are in the Axarquia.
We arrange appointments Monday to Saturday, at whatever time suits you best. At the visit we measure up, check the wall or floor where the system will be anchored, look at which way it faces and show you fabric samples and frame colours. If it’s a pergola, we also decide where the rainwater will run off. And if you can’t be there, someone you trust can meet us instead.
To make the most of the trip, you can show us everything on your list: the terrace awning, the bedroom fly screens or the porch enclosure. We measure it all on the same day and you get a combined written quote, with a fixed price and often in under 24 hours.
Installation is carried out by our own technical team, with no subcontractors, and we’re still there afterwards for after-sales service: materials come with a 2-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer and product, and we also stand behind the structure and the installation. To find out more about how we work, visit our company, or book the visit straight away using the quote form.
Do you repair awnings in Motril that another company installed?
Yes. Awning repairs in Motril are an important part of what we do in the area, and it doesn’t matter to us who fitted the awning. It often happens that the original installer has stopped trading, doesn’t answer or simply doesn’t do repairs, and the awning is left half-working for whole seasons.
Typical faults on the coast are sun-damaged or torn fabric, arms that have lost their tension, rust on brackets and screws, and a motor that stops responding or a remote that won’t pair. We check the whole thing and tell you clearly what can be fixed and what can’t. If the frame is sound, replacing the part or the fabric gets the awning working again for much less than a new one.
For fabrics we work with Sauleda and Dickson and make them to fit your existing frame, in plain or striped colours. If your awning is manual, it’s a good time to add a Cherubini motor that you operate by remote control and that can have a wind sensor; you’ll find it in awning motorisation.
All the details are in awning repairs and new fabric. To give us an idea before we come, send us a photo of the awning and the fault on WhatsApp; that’s often enough for us to know which parts to bring and save a trip.
Which awning do you recommend for a bar or restaurant near the port in Motril?
A hospitality terrace works much harder than a private one: it’s opened and closed every day, gets sun for hours and has to protect customers who don’t want to be too hot or put up with gusts of wind while they eat. Around the Varadero and the port, the marine environment is also tough on the frame.
Depending on the space, we usually suggest long-reach folding arms, a monobloc awning when the width is large and more rigidity is needed, or an awning with support legs if the facade isn’t tall or solid enough. For levante days, windbreaks with side guides close off the sides so you can keep serving.
Fabric for a business needs to be easy to clean and hold its colour. Sauleda and Dickson fabrics offer plenty of choice, and depending on the model they can be personalised with the name or logo of the premises. A Cherubini motor with a push button or remote control saves effort when opening and closing every day.
If the terrace is on the public highway, the awning must fit in with the town hall’s terrace authorisation. We explain what to check and try to install outside opening hours so you don’t lose a single table. If you have several terraces or want to refresh the look of your premises, we plan it all in a single visit. More ideas in awnings for businesses and hospitality.
